Wind energy projects in Pakistan will make villages free of government shortages: AEDB contacts Denmark lab for data validation

“Jhakkar, Aandhi aur hawa”: Some small steps of made by the Alternate Energy Development Board of Paksitan:

Earth wind fire and water were considered the prime elements. Today all four create electricity. Geothermal power uses the energy from the earth’s core and is utilized extensively in many countries like Germany. Electricity from tidal power is used in France and Canada. Pakistan has typically banked on Hydroelctrical power and more recently by burning very expensive fuel. The first windmill was developed by the Arabs. Muslim windmill technology was used for industrial use in Holland. When one drives down from San Francisco one sees “forests of windmills” generating electricity. If the vision is correct Pakistan may see thousands of windmills in Baluchistan, Punjab and Sindh and Sarhad and Kashmir. Pakistan has great wind.

“The windmill was invented in 634 for a Persian caliph and was used to grind corn and draw up water for irrigation. In the vast deserts of Arabia, when the seasonal streams ran dry, the only source of power was the wind which blew steadily from one direction for months. Mills had six or 12 sails covered in fabric or palm leaves. It was 500 years before the first windmill was seen in Europe.”

Maybe this was the reason that Don Quixote was chasing Windmills thinking it was a Turkish army.

Good news and bad news from Pakistan is not exclusive of each other. When bad things happen in Pakistan, people forget that there are always good things that are happening. Of the best things that has happened over the past decade is the self-confidence of Paksitanis who do not bank on the government for doleouts. Private companies and individuals read and research and build alliances. Karachi has many development plans that were funded directly by foreign and domestic donors. The Emar project is a shining example of this.

Pakistan and Pakistanis are working on the latest technolgies to bring electricity to the nook and corner of the country.

Wind energy project: AEDB contacts Denmark lab for data validationStaff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) has contacted Rise National Laboratory of Denmark for data validation to identify wind energy generation potential in coastal areas of Pakistan, sources told Daily Times on Sunday.

Pakistan Meteorological Department has conducted a detailed wind power potential survey of the coastal areas of Pakistan to identify potential areas where economically feasible wind farms could be established. The National Laboratory of Denmark will validate the data confirming the opportunities of power generation through wind.

Dr Irfan Younis, Institute of Information Technology director at Arid University, told Daily Times that the country had potential of generating 50,000 MW power through wind on 1046 km long highway in Balochistan and wind was the best alternative source of generating energy when the country was facing a power deficit.

Dr Younis, who is also a research fellow in energy sector, said Pakistan would be facing acute shortage of gas by 2011. “At present the wind energy is being used for the electrification of remote villages in the southern coastal areas of Pakistan. So far more than 18 villages have been electrified using micro wind turbines. The gross wind power potential in Sindh is 43000 MW. However, the exploitable electric power generation potential of this area is estimated to be about 11000 MW,” he added.

The AEDB has issued Letter of Intents to 93 companies to generate 4650-megawatt wind power. Large wind turbines for power generation have not been installed in Pakistan so far, however, about 30 windmills for pumping water have been installed on experimental purposes in different parts of Sindh and Balochistan.

Pakistan IT exports to touch $11 billion mark by 2011

Pakistanis are part and parcel of the growing economy. 50 Television channels, some with 24 hour news channels compete with each other to inform and erergize not only the musicians, artists, political scientists but also the businessmen and the entrepreneurs. Pakistan has a healthy and growing Information Technology business and most of the software houses have a presence in Pakistan. Many Pakistani-Americans and industrialists have fueled this sector. As the neeeds of the growing Pakistani industries grows, this creates IT needs for the industrialists. Hundreds of multinational corporations seek local talent. Middle Eastern companies seeking loyal and trust worthy software engineers are teeming to take advantage of the Pakistani boom in cell phones, and infrastrutural development. Local talent is meeting the demand of the local population.

Here is an article on the Paksitani IT industry.

The IT industry of Pakistan with low telecommunication cost, 100 percent ownership of equity and repatriation of the foreign investors profits as well as tax exemption until 2016, has the potential to increase exports from $1.4 to $11 billion by 2011. As a result of the government incentive-oriented policy, Pakistan is now emerging as a major player in the global IT market. These initiatives include 100 percent ownership of equity to foreign investors with the incentive to repatriate profits and tax exemption to it companies until 2016. With the overall $2.8 billion IT industry including annual export of about $1.4 billion, Pakistan attracting investment which is likely to touch over $11 billion by 2011.IT exports in FY 2005-2006, as reported by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), were $72.210 million, thus exceeding the target of $72 million. This represents an annual increase of 56 percent as compare to the exports of $46.355 million in FY 2004-2005.

There are about 700 active IT companies in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. Other cities are being surveyed, and it is expected that there are around 50 IT companies in other smaller cities and towns. Growth in Islamabad, over the last three years, has been around 300 per cent, Karachi around 180 percent and in Lahore it is around 150 per cent.

The global community has placed Pakistan in the ‘First Category’ countries in 2007. Previously, in 2006 Pakistan was placed in the ‘Third Category’ countries. Moreover, Pakistan’s IT revenue had grown to 59 percent in 2006. Similarly, new IT parks in major cities are being set up across the country while 750,000 square feet of space has already been leased out to IT companies for new parks.

There are many Pakistani IT companies that have developed world class software’s in areas such as car leasing, enterprise application integration, mortgage lien processing, stock market order management, mobile convergence, data and web content management for some of the top most corporations of the world.

 wind farms

What is a wind farm?

  • Large modern wind turbines have glass-fibre rotor blades up to 65 meters diameter.
  • The grey tubular steel towers are 25 to 80 meters high.
  • Most wind turbines have three blades which face into the wind; the wind turns the blades round, this spins the shaft, which connects to a generator where the electricity is made.
  • Wind turbines operate in wind speeds of 4 to 5 metres per second (around 10 miles an hour). Maximum power output is at 15 meters/second (around 33 miles per hour). In gale force winds, (25 metres/second, 50+ miles/hour) wind turbines shut down.
  • A wind turbine lasts around 20-25 years.
  • A typical wind farm with 20 turbines takes up 1 square kilometre, using 1% of the land. The remaining land can be used for other purposes, e.g farming or as natural habitat.
  • One 1.8 MW wind turbine produces enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 1,000 households each year.
  • Wind energy is one of the cheapest of the renewable energy technologies. A new onshore wind farm in a good location costs 3-4 pence per unit, [new coal (2.5-4.5p) new nuclear (4-7p)]. Electricity from smaller wind farms are more expensive.

The Pakistani economy is booming despite the negative press the country recieves.

Pakistan is 2nd best performer in region

News about Pakistan comes in two compartments, propoganda and real news about Pakistan. Each trial and tribulation in Pakistan is highlighted with dnager signals, “high alerts” and doomsday pundits yaking away nonsensical ideas about a country they know nothing about.

Despite the exaggerated bad news, Pakistan’s economy shows robust vital signs and continues to grow

KARACHI: Among South Asian countries, Pakistan is the second best performer after the Maldives. It is ranked at 76th in the world and 11th in all Asian economies, according to the report released by the State Bank of Pakistan on Saturday.

Pakistan’s ranking in the ease of doing business from regulatory perspectives, though deteriorated slightly during 2007, is still better than most of the economies in the region.

The ranking is based on 10 indicators of business regulation that follows the time and cost to meet government requirements in business start-up, operation, trade, taxation and closure. However, a detailed analysis suggests that the reversal was brought about by the improvement in ranking of other countries as the regulatory indicators of Pakistan either continued to improve or remained largely unchanged, SBP report said.

For instance, starting up business used to entail 21.3 percent of per capita income in 2006; however, in 2007 it costs only 14 percent. Similarly, the total tax rate (as percent of profit) has declined to 40.7 percent in 2007 as compared with 43.4 percent in 2006. Indicators where the Pakistan’s ranking has improved during 2007 include trading across borders and enforcing contracts.

SBP report explained that the improvement in trading across borders followed from the reforms in 2006 that included introducing the electronic data interchange systems, applying risk management techniques and introducing customs administration reforms. In enforcing contracts, however, the ranking remained still quite low at 154. In fact, globally the time to enforce a contract is lengthiest in South Asian countries with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh amongst the 10 countries with most difficulties in enforcing contracts in terms of time and cost to resolve commercial disputes. staff report

Bill Richardson also mis-speaks on Pakistan AGAIN and succumbs to "Foot in mouth disease" ! Candidates should remember "speech is silver but silence is golden"

It is amazing that a power so great as America has political candidates who have no clue about the world.  Almost all US politicians have “foot in mouth disease.” Ms. Hillary Clinton thought that President Musharraf was running for the election against Ms. Bhutto and after the assissination of Ms. Bhutto, and the boycott of the elections by Nawaz Sharif (of again, one again, off again, on again) Musharraf would be the only one left standing. Mr. Huckeby also said someting silly about Pakistan showing his ignoarace of Pakistani politics.

Governor Bill Richardson on January 6th, 2008 in an interview with the antagonistic Wolf Blitzer wanted President Musharraf to setup an interim goverment because  the Pakistani constitution has a provision for an interim government to be setup before the elections.

Governo r Richardson was unaware that the government of Mr. Shaukat Azis is no longer is powere and that we have a new interim Prime Minister in power. He was unaware that there is an interim government in place in Pakistan right now. We all remember Mr. Bill Richardson well. Right after Pakistan responded to the Indian Nuclear explosions, Mr. Bill Richardson was lecturing Pakistan on “rolling back” Pakistan’s Nuclear program and that Pakistan should follow the example of South Africa, Brazil and Argentina. He “huffed and puffed” and threatened Pakistan. It goes to the credit of Nawaz Sharif that Pakistan did not buckle under the pressure at the time and did go ahead with the explosions. This Nawaz Sharif backbone was nowhere to be found during the Kargil crisis when Mr. Nawaz Sharif signed a humiliating surrender document in front of Mr. Clinton (who called the Indian prime minister, before, during and after the Nawaz-Clinton meeting).

Ron Paul and Mr. Dennis Kucinich has made some interesting cooments that are worth listening to.

Attacking Pakistan: Rebuttal to Engdahl's war mongering

A rebuttal to Engdahl’s “Back to business in Pakistan”

A call for sanity not to attack Paksitan.
This is with to the fantasy trip by William Engdahl titled “Back to business in Pakistan”. It is exactly this type of nonsensical writing that has landed America into the quagmire in Iraq, the eminent defeat in Afghanistan and a failure in the Middle East. In plain words, it is a crock of bull.

The unmitigated bigoted drivel displays only superficial knowledge about Pakistan, totally lacks any imperious intellect of the nuances of the complex political issues, is totally biased, has serious errors in it and it is typical of the ant-Pakistan hallucinating delirium so pervasive in the minds of the worst columnists. Their’s is an eschatologically obsessed version of events that is trying to make American foreign and domestic policy conterminous with their bigoted blinkered worldview which comminates all those who disagree with them. It is pedagogical to remember and it doesn’t take a pathologist to see that the real intention of this well orchestrated and planned smear campaign is to couple “Islam” with a powerful soubriquet, devoid of any analytical content, conjuring up images of a universally detested past.

Benazir Bhutto was not the knight in shining armor that she is portrayed in the article. Benzir Bhutto and her corrupt and despised husband known as Mr. 10% because of his shady deals rained terror on Karachi and she was the “mother of the Taliban”. It was during her reign that the Taliban took over Afghanistan. It was during the reign of the Zardaris that Murtaza Bhutto (Her brother and rival to the leageacy of Z.A. Bhutto) was murdered in broad daylight two or three days after a public altercation with Mr. Zardari. The Human Rights and Amnesty International reports are testimony to the extra judicial killings and corruption during her two stints as Prime Minister.

There are outstanding Interpol Red Warrants and conviction in Switzerland as well as conviction in Pakistan on Ms. Benazir Bhutto.

Mr. Musharraf had nothing to fear from Benazir Bhutto. It is doubtful that she would have gained a plurality of the votes. Urban Sindh always goes to the MQM. The vote in the Punjab would have been split between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the two wings of the Pakistan Muslim League.

Benzir did not have neither the vote-bank nor the gall, nor the gumption to fulfill her promises made. These were empty promises made to the Americans in a Faustian deal. She could not have delivered on her public statements or her other 5Es (empty promises to the people).

It was Mr. Zardari who did not permit a routine autopsy of the body of Ms. Benazir Bhutto.

The expanded US presence is to train the Frontier Corps. Actual Americans on the ground will create a wave of anti-Americanism. What will they do? Push the insurgents from Afghanistan to the Tribal areas to Swat to Islamabad to Delhi?

The Pakistani people also have some questions for Congress. Pakistan paid $450 million for F-16s. She neither got the planes nor the money, and the planes were resold for additional Dollars to Pakistan. What kind of friendship is this?

More than 1000 Pakistani soldiers have died in the “war on terror”, but India got a Nuclear deal. What kind of friendship is this?

Pakistan has been an ally of the USA for more than 60 years, a cold war ally, a founding member of SEATO and CENTO and currently a Major Non-Nato Ally (MNNA). However Pakistan get lectures to “do more” while the USA is unable to crush her enemies in Afghanistan and the NATO soldiers are unable to provide security to the Mayor of Kabul, the incompetent Mr. Karzai. How about more democracy for the Pashtuns of Afghanistan.

Pakistan was instrumental in defeating the USSR, and liberating Afghanistan. As a reward Pakistan faced multi-faceted sanctions. What kind of friendship is this?

Israel got $30 billion in aid. Pakistan got peanuts for waging this war. What kind of friendship is this?

Mr. Engdahl, we see that you can use a Xerox machine well. The author’s unoriginal parroted, biased and acerbic drivel is worse than his  erroneous putrid anti-Pakistan ad hominem. Is there an echo in here? His “master’s voice” can be clearly “heard” and seen in this dictated transcription which emanates from “Big Brother”. The author is good at transliterating regurgitated Neocon claptrap. This abominable soporific screed is typical of the ignominious anti-Pakistan cacophonous tripe so pervasive in the photo-copying columnists of the Xerox variety, that are nurtured in the augean stables of shoddy yellow journalism.

I xeroxed a mirror. Now I have an extra xerox machine. – Steven Wright

Let us discuss the heart of the thesis. American boots on the ground. Will this solve everything? Are we looking at better results than Iraq?

Incursions may ignite a fire that may not be containable.

Do we want to deal with cardboard caricatures, or do we deal with reality?

One forgets that this is the fourth largest country in the world, nuclear armed and in certain regions of the country the entire population is armed. Does sanity suggest that we antagonize 160 million people? For what and for whom? For getting OBL? One of the worst case scenarios is if Americans are taken hostages and then attempts are made to rescue them. This would be embarrassing for the USA and Pakistan.

The risk vs. reward may not be worth it.

Then there is always the possibility of a catastrophe where many Pakistani civilians die as a result of a strike. An accident could occur. If the Pakistanis are not aware of a strike missiles could be launched which could start a regional war. Pakistan and India are nuclear armed. In such a case, all bets are off, and the result would be horrible for the planet.

Pakistan has a 10 division well trained and well equipped army, one of the most professional armies in the world. Most of the officers were trained in the UK, USA, and Australia etc. The army has a centralized control with intense loyalty to the officer corps. More than 500,00 soldiers are in reserve, and like Israel all Pakistani high-schoolers (11th and 12th grades) are trained in basic two year military training called NCC (National Cadet Corp). The army is armed to the teeth, with local arms production M-16, Kalashnikovs, heavy artillery and now airplanes (knockoff of F-16s called JF-17 Thunder). They also have one of the best missile programs in the world, better than that of India.

“The Regime” consists of the army support, an elected National Assembly and Senate with representation of all the political parties including a heavy and intense presence of the MMA, PML and PPP opposition.

Now to eliminate all this would require a full scale invasion. 400,000 American soldiers and mercenaries (contractors) could not do it in Iraq, which has one fifth of the population and was sanctioned for ten years.

Now let us talk about invading Pakistan. Whose army is going to do it? One will need at least two million soldiers to occupy the country partially, and no one in 5000 years has been able to hold it.

The conclusion of last year’s game, said one participant, was that there are no palatable ways to forcibly ensure the security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons — and that even studying scenarios for intervention could worsen the risks by undermining U.S.-Pakistani cooperation. “It’s an unbelievably daunting problem,” said this participant, a former Pentagon official who asked not to be identified because of the game’s secrecy. The contingency plans that do exist, he added, are at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Tampa, and are in “very close hold.” Even so, he said, planners really haven’t developed answers for how to deal with nuclear weapons stashed in Pakistan’s big cities and high mountain ranges. washingtonpost.

As a result of U.S. government studies of the nuclear issue, Pakistani officials have come to believe a U.S. intervention “is a real threat now,” Khan said. The Pakistani military almost certainly has taken steps to forestall such a raid, he said, such as creating phony bunkers that contain dummy nuclear warheads. He estimated that Pakistan’s current arsenal now contains about 80 to 120 genuine warheads, roughly double the figure usually cited by outside experts.

It may actually make things worse, to attempt that sort of thing,” agreed Zia Mian, a Princeton University physicist and expert on nuclear proliferation in South Asia. Among other negative repercussions, he predicted, any U.S. effort to secure Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal “would really increase anti-Americanism.” washingtonpost

Calculating the Risks in Pakistan, U.S. War Games Weigh Options for Securing Nuclear Stockpile, By Thomas E. Ricks Washington Post Staff Writer, Sunday, December 2, 2007; Page A20

Before the country is attacked many unnamed capitals and cities may go up in smoke, the Gulf of Hormuz would be blocked (ending supply of oil to the world), the Suez Canal would be choked, and many oilfields would be radio active for the next ten thousand years. This would mean the end of life as we know it. MAD (mutually assured destruction is the wave of the future).Any takers?

Pakistan may also decide to re-realign itself with Russia and China and leave the USA high and dry.

Peace is the only way. Let us build bridges of harmony and rethink the strategy of war and “taking out nukes”
