MSNBC: Un-Suspend Keith Olbermann. Bring him back

MSNBC

host Keith Olbermann has been placed on indefinite suspension without pay in the wake of a If Olbermann’s Donations Are Bad, What About GE‘s? 11/5/10 Politico report (11/5/10) that revealed Olbermann had donated $7,200 to three Democratic candidates, in violation of NBC‘s standards barring employees from making political contributions.

A journalist donating money to a political candidate raises obvious conflict of interest questions; at a minimum, such contributions should be disclosed on air. But if supporting politicians with money is a threat to journalistic independence, what are the standards for Olbermann’s bosses at NBC, and at NBC‘s parent company General Electric?

According to the Center for Responsive PoliticsGE made over $2 million in political contributions in the 2010 election cycle (most coming from the company’s political action committee). The top recipient was Republican Senate candidate Rob Portman from Ohio. The company has also spent $32 million on lobbying this year, and contributed over $1 million to the successful “No on 24″ campaign against a California ballot initiative aimed at eliminating tax loopholes for major corporations (New York Times11/1/10).

Comcast, the cable company currently looking to buy NBC, has dramatically increased its political giving, much of it to lawmakers who support the proposed merger (Bloomberg10/19/10). And while Fox News parentNews Corp‘s $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association caused a stir, GE had “given $245,000 to the Democratic governors and $205,000 to the Republican governors since last year,” reported theWashington Post (8/18/10).

Olbermann’s donations are in some ways comparable to fellow MSNBC host Joe Scarborough‘s $4,200 contribution to Republican candidate Derrick Kitts in 2006 (MSNBC.com7/15/07). When that was uncovered, though, NBC dismissed this as a problem, since Scarborough “hosts an opinion program and is not a news reporter.” Olbermann, of course, is also an opinion journalist–but MSNBC seems to hold him to a different standard.

Two years earlier, the Washington Post reported (1/18/04):

NBC chief executive Robert Wright has contributed $8,000 since 1999, including $3,500 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and $1,000 to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Andrew Lack, a former NBC News chief, gave $1,000 to Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-La.) while NBC president, and Wright contributed $1,500–after the House committee Tauzin chairs held hearings on the networks’ election night failures. NBC spokeswoman Allison Gollust said the network allows its executives to make contributions and that Wright “does not make any decisions specific to news coverage.”

Wright, however, was reported in a recent New York magazine piece (10/3/10) to have told then-NBC Newschief Neal Shapiro to move to the right of Fox News in response to the September 11 attacks: “We have to be more conservative then they are,” the magazine quoted Wright.

MSNBC‘s treatment of Olbermann is also in sharp contrast to Fox News‘ handling of Sean Hannity, who was revealed by Salon (9/23/10) to have given $5,000 to the campaign of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R.-Minn.), a Tea Party favorite–without Fox expressing any public disapproval. Hannity has allowed Republican candidates to use his Fox program for fundraising (Mediaite10/17/10); as Salon noted, Hannity was this year’s keynote speaker at the National Republican Congressional Committee‘s annual fundraising dinner.

If the concern is about how giving money to politicians threatens journalistic independence, then companies likeNBC should explain why their parent companies can lavish so much money on political candidates or causes with no concern about conflicts of interest or the need to disclose these donations to viewers. The lesson here would seem to be that some of the workers shouldn’t make political donations, but the bosses are free to give as much as they’d like. Anyone who watches Olbermann’s show knows what his political views are. So what do the far larger contributions from GE tell us?

ACTION:
Ask NBC and MSNBC to explain their inconsistent standards regarding political donations.

CNNs perpetual anti-Pakistan diatribe is based on an agenda to destabilize Pakistan

GOEBELLS WOULD BE PROUD OF FOX & CNN.

Make a Big lie and repeat it many times over.

CNN behaves like an American network. When it does that it loses its gloabl credability and its audience turn to a different channel to get the global perspective of events. Whether it is the persoanal bias of Wolf Blitzer, or the ignorance of Andersen, the end result is that CNN impacts world events and is responsible for the rising Anti-Americanism in the Greater Middle East.

Each time Emersen, Toncreda or Peter King spew their hate mongering, people overseas do not realize that they are not representing America or what it offers. Each time Ann Coulter is on the tube, trying to portray herself as a consumate representative of America, people overseas do not realize that she is an entertainer and her carefully orchestrated outbursts usually against the most vulnerable members of the society are a way to attract attention to her.

A suicide bombing in Israel evinces deep sympathy from CNN. A suicide bombing in Pakistan elicits a discussion about the instability of Pakistan and “loose nukes’. Same crime, same blood, same hurt. Totally different reactions from CNN. The suicide bombing in Israel does not discuss “loose nukes” there.

One day CNN will grow up and represent news for the world, or it will become as irrelevant at Pravda or Izvestia did. Already, news seekers get their news from Indian, Pakistani or Arabic news channels or from the internet.

We have been watching CNN recently. Their “news” is garbage and has an agenda… the Neocon agenda. CNNs  perpetual flummoxed ad hominem trope on Pakistan has serious errors in it, which is typical of the odiously conflated half-baked harebrained doctrinal tripe so pervasive in a section of the press in the open hunting season on Pakistan these days. It is very consternating and most disappointing that the phlegmatic doyens and placid cognoscenti of CNNs lacked the imperious intellect to reject the ongoing  compendium of insipid depredation, and chose to egregiously reproduce the vapid pabulum and rambling crypto-racist putrid screed written by a caravan of  blundering doltish and vindictive votaries of prurient scurrility.

Pakistan has been a loyal and faithful ally of the United States since it’s birth in 1947.

Pakistan and Pakistanis supported the USA in CENTO, SEATO and during the cold war. Ask the U2 pilots about the help Pakistan was giving the USA when Pakistan was used as a base agaisnt the USSR. The support in Afghanistan and against the USSR was not like the “Coalition of the Willing”.

Two million Pakistanis and Muslims died defending the West and the USA so that we could have freedoms in America. This was when the “Mujahdeen” were being invited to the White House (Congressman Charlie Wilson’s “Charlie’s War”) and Talibaan were being invited to the Governor’s House in Texas (Michael Moore’s movie Fahrenheit 9/11). Coolie in “Unholy Wars” defines the US and Western role in building the network of fighters from Muslim countries to go and fight for the USA against the USSR. The Talibaan were created by the CIA with help from the ISI and the Saudis. Today we forget the other players. Pakistan was converted into a drug and Klashnikov culture by the CIA and the KGB in their proxy war and thousands of Pakistanis suffered. The human cost to Pakistan was incredible, and your forgetfulness creates animosity and indeed more.

Pakistan is the most abused ally of the USA. CNNs “Do More” mantra and anti-Pakistan diatribe is Pakistan bashing under an agenda, known only to you. It is this picture of “forgetfulness” and “deceit” that creates the picture of “The Ugly American” and destroys and disparages my great land…the USA. You have no right to destroy the image and the friendships of that has taken generations to build with the people of Pakistan. You have no right to speak on behalf of Americans, since you have an agenda!!

Pakistan was the only nation dismembered after World War Two. Pakistanis have pledged “Never Again” and no amount of arm twisting will let Pakistanis give up their sovereignty. Pakistani friends of the USA have the following advise for American diplomats: The diplomats and “journalists” should “do more” and take memory improvement pills.  The selective amnesia of these diplomats and columnists conjure up images of ”The Ugly American that has forgotten “Charlie’s War” (Congressman Charlie Wilson) and the fact that it was the CIA that created these Frankenstein’s monsters in the “Unholy Wars” (Cooley) and left us to clear the garbage. This attitude perpetuates the belief by a growing number of Pakistanis that they supported the wrong superpower and that Pakistan would have been better off with the USSR borders at Torkham.

Selective Amnesia destroys friendships. After all that Pakistan has done for the USA in the past 50 years, the USA should “do more” to learn to some manners to say “Thank You”. Two million Pakistanis, Afghans and Muslims died supporting the USA in the egotistical and useless Cold War between the USSR-USA. 3.6 million Afghans were hosted in Pakistan for a decade which caused havoc in every facet of our society creating the Drug and Klashnikov culture that destroyed the very fabric of Pakistani sociology. Pakistan is a major Non-Nato ally and was the founding member of SEATO and CENTO.

She even offered her soil to the USA to be used for U2 flights to take off from Badabare Airforce base. Today there are several air bases that transport more than 70% of American supplies to Afghanistan. No one mentions that the State Bank had an office in the WTC and 300 of the victims were Muslims.

Talk about an ingrate nation that forgets friends and friendship. Accolades for Reagan and the heroes who died on the beaches of Normandy, but no mention of the 2 million “mujahideen” who died in the Hindu Kush liberating Afghanistan from the clutches of the “Evil Empire“.

The disadvantage of “doing America’s bidding” is that one always has to hear the deafening “Pakistan must do more” chant. The mantra never ends. Nothing is enough. Pakistanis and Muslim shed blood for America. 2 million Muslims died for America and the West in their silly egotistical “I have bigger cahunas” cold war. How much of the worlds resources were wasted on a war that ended with a whimper without any surrender documents. Today all the “enemies” are the best of friends. While airports are named after Ronald Reagan and the Republicans take credit for the destruction of the Soviet Union, no credit is given to Pakistan or Pakistanis or Muslims who died in destroying the USSR’s “evil empire“.

The lunches on the White House lawns for the “mujahideen” are have been long forgotten, replaced with the deafening “Pakistan must do more“.

Filed Marshall Muhammad Ayub Khan who did the best bidding for America got sick and tired of the “do more” syndrome and wrote a book called “Friends Not Masters“. During the 60s, America had a airbase in Badabare, where the U-2s used to take off from, keeping tabs on the USSR. As a result, our cities became nuclear targets. He ended the “do more” chant with a “do less” strategy and threw the Americans out of Pakistan.

CNNs odious, rancid and hackneyed imperviousness to everything Pakistani blinds him to the large spectrum of the vivacious Pakistani diversity, makes him deaf to the varied cacophony of Pakistani ideas, numbs him to the inherently punier societal contradictions of the country, and helps him ignore the profound internal cohesion, so that he can surreptitiously inexerably and single-mindedly negatively highlight the putative and superficial dissonance of a highly complex society. CNN can thus impugne 160 million people of being enmeshed and ensnared in everything that goes wrong with anything. It is pedagogical to investigate the didactic provenance of her cabal and research the incipient truculence of his petulantly portentous and venomously vindictive revanchist commentariat.

Pakistani friends of the USA say, the USA should “do more” to raise the decibel level of Thank You to the Pakistani nation not just a person. Pakistanis expect the USA to “do more” to stay out of Pakistan and Afghanistan and “do more” not to drag Pakistan into Iraq. If the USA does not change its attitude it may not have a friend left in Pakistan. If you want to continue to tell us to “do more“, a growing number of Pakistanis will say “Enough is Enough“. “No More“. Some may even ask you to “do more” to “stay home“. Some may even say “Yankee Go Home“. If “Al-Qaida” finds an ear to the resentment against US ungratefulness, it could get a lot worse then a slogan. CNN should hire Ms. Manners to teach the diplomats to say “Thank You”.

An American Fall. A rapist, murderer, has no religion and should not be identified by his religion

AN AMERICAN FALL

October is always full of surprises. Autumn is wonderful season. “’tis the season of mists mellow fruitfulness, close bosom friend of maturing sun”. Lord Tennyson wrote an ode to Autumn. However if he was alive today, he would be ashamed of this fall.

This week my homeland, our sweet land of liberty was rocked by several despicable events of pedophilia, murder and violence. From the corridors of Congress, to the corridors of schools; from the steeples of our churches, to the cross-roads of our inner-cities, evil men violated innocence. This Fall will be remembered as a fall when we failed to protect our children. This fall our stars and stripes should be at half-mast. This week, America the beautiful got a scar on her beautiful face. This fall, our statue of liberty had a tear in her eyes.

These are not isolated incidents. From Columbine to Central park, our society is plagued by violence and murder. We seem to be numb to the fact that more than 100,000-500,000 women are raped in our country each year. More than 10,000 humans are killed in our land every year. More than one million Americans are incarcerated of which 100,000 are women. These jailed women and men face additional violence on a daily basis. We are 5% of the world’s population but have 25% of the world prison population. More than a quarter of the African-American population is either in jail, or headed towards it. All these factors point out to a deterioration of our society. Pedophilia is rampant on the internet, and even in our churches. This violence has no religion. Defining the religion of a criminal is non-productive, and displays latent bigotry. A criminal is a criminal.

It is time, that our Rabbis, Priests, Imams and Monks spoke out against this onslaught on our youth. The perpetuators of these and other crimes against other humans were not Christian rapists, Jewish violators, or Islamic killers. These thugs, murderers, killers and rapists have no religion, they are simply rapists, murderers, terrorists, and thugs period. Calling Foley a Christian pervert is as stupid as calling someone a Muslim murderer. No one needs to investigate his religion, his Bible or the fact that Foley was molested as a young boy. His perversion has nothing to do with the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope or the Bible.

Thousands of our military people have come back in body bags from Iraq and Afghanistan. Afghans and Iraqis have killed hundreds who are innocent. Sinhalese Buddhists fought tooth and nail against Hindu Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. Ugandan Christian and Congolese Christians fought pitched battles against each other. However our media did not designate their religion. Only Muslim criminals and murderers were labeled by their religion.

This fall we continued the open hunting season on patriotic American citizens. This fall we continue to torture and jail people without trial, all in the name of freedom. This fall, some of the stars on our flag lost a bit of their twinkle. This fall we continued to defy the teachings of Jesus, Moses and Mohammad in the name of “war”. This fall, our founding fathers turned in their graves. This fall the halo on our land tilted a bit.

Don’t let this Camelot lose its luster. Don’t let this land of liberty lose her shine. Don’t let this beacon of freedom fall.

Missed Opportunities by Pakistan Television (PTV): Unleashing the transformation force of Television to create a brand image for Pakistan and counter the propoganda

Missed Revenue Opportunities by Pakistan Television (PTV)

Unleashing the transformation force of Television to create a brand image for Pakistan and counter the propoganda

Moin Ansari

PTV  had the unique opportunity to become a world class Television News station, however it has been asleep at the wheel. The problem with PTV is that it does not “THINK BIG”, and the leaders of PTV have no concept of the opportunities available in “the global village”.

In the aftermath of 911 the entire world was watching Kabul and Islamabad. PTV forgot and was unable to know the basics of geography to know that the only road to Kabul came from Islamabad. Apart from the advantage of geography, language, culture, and religion, PTV had the links and should have had the infrastructure to provide live and in depth coverage of the war in Afghanistan. PTV was asleep at the wheel. It took an insignificant, distant but energetic Al-Jazeera to capture the imagination of the Middle East and provide in depth and sensational coverage of the war in Afghanistan. PTV  was asleep at the wheel.

It is to be remembered that PTV was the first TV station in South Asia, but was unable to take the lead in today’s media race. PTV has been asleep at the wheel.

PTV could have produced and broadcast Arabic and Persian programs to take advantage of the huge and lucrative Arab and Asian markets, but has been unable to do anything to earn real dollars for Pakistan. PTV has been asleep at the wheel.

PTV  could have and should have taken advantage of the Indian market a natural source of revenue and audience by broadcasting news and views in the regional languages of India–Gujrati, Bengali, Hindi, but was too busy in local power struggles to think of these lucrative deals.

PTV  could offer online courses and Internet access to its audience. Pakistanis in the USA including the author of this article sent proposals on this matter, but PTV  was asleep at the wheel.  PTV should be teaching us foreign languages, Chinese, Farsi, Turkish and working with the regional Central Asian States in lucrative swap deals. PTV can offer training to a lot of 3rd world countries and to the neighbors on TV transmission. PTV can offer dubbing services and dub Pakistani programs in all languages of the world and sell the programs and movies to many countries around the planet.

Today PTV should have offices and studios in every major Arab city, recruiting local talent, talking advantage of the training opportunities and setting up local language programs, however the PTV charter is narrow and focused only on dumb and useless “soap operas” (“dramas”).

PTV  had the advantage of language and could be mouthpiece for the Muslim world, but it is asleep at the wheel.

PTV  should offer and should be able to create Pakistani and Muslim cartoons for children and market Pakistani merchandise to the overseas audience. However it is totally unaware of the concepts of international marketing.

Even the website of PTV leaves much to be desired. A High School dropout could design a better website, where at least the address and contact numbers are accurate. Giving out e-mail address of hotmail.com accounts is so very unprofessional.

PTVs benchmark is BBC. It is not even close. PTV uses a ridiculous mixture of Urdu & English, Punjabi and English, Sindhi and English in its broadcasts and has done nothing to create a sense of national unity. Dawn, Aag, GEO and ARY speak the correct languages. PTV dramas should be using mixed languages based upon the characters…so that we become familiar with Pushto and Sindhi, Saraiki and Punjabi. Only Punjabi songs are played, what about Hindko, Potohari, Pahari, Kashmiri? PTV should be holding contests for the best research on Pakistani history and publish White Papers on issues. PTV should be producing historical research documentaries on the latest on the Soan River finds (100,000-200,000 year old articles have been discovered) and the Mehergarh digs (oldest agricultural sites in the Subcontinent).

PTV can be broadcasting Harvard and MIT lectures that are available free to anyone. PTV can be a forum for scientific techniques broadcast to the world. How to develop alternate energy sources like Geothermal Energy, Wind farms, Disposable Waste Energy, Recycled water usages,  and Bio-Fuel energy. PTV should be working environmental issues on discouraging “plastic bags”,  lead paint and pollution from factories as well as cars. What can kids do to help the environment? How to use a volunteer force to clean up the neighborhood? PTV should be discussing basic inventions to help the poor people. Low cost toilets Hand rung $150 Laptop that does not require electricity, solar low cost ovens, solar panels to heat water. PTV should be showing the earthquake victims how to build low cost housing. Scientific research from around the world has developed simple methods to create homes that are good for earthquake regions.

PTV has no clue about these technologies. PTV should be in the forefront to educate our exporters on the latest marketing techniques to boost exports. The only thing PTV exports are useless soaps, which are regularly pirated. PTV should be making CDs, and DVDs, and using surround sound technology and investing in HDTV. Right now, it has no concept of where the world is moving towards, and is clueless about the tremendous opportunities out there in the “global village.” PTV should be working with the OIC on developing strategies to counter the anti-Pakistan propaganda and creating a brand image for Pakistan. Recently France, and Iran have started their own broadcast channels in English. BBC has a BBC for America channel. PTV should offer PTV programs free to the cable networks in America. PTV should offer PTV programs on demand in hotel rooms and on cable and satellite and cable channels and charge a fees to watch a “drama” or the news. PTV should be looking at HD TV, Direct Satellite TV broadcasts, You Tube links and broadcasts, Internet broadcasts and offices in foreign countries to get international advertisement revenue for the Pakistani population.

President Musharraf should hire an internationally known leader of a major network and pay him/her in Dollars to see how we can transform PTV  into an international channel that can and should provide Dollars to Pakistan and Pakistanis.
