President Obama‘s grandmother told a Saudi newspaper that she is praying for the commander in chief to convert to Islam.

“I prayed for my grandson Barack to convert to Islam,” said Haja Sarah Omar, 88, of Kenya told Al-Watan in Jeddah.

Omar was in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca along with Obama’s uncle Saeed Hussein Obama and four of her grandchildren as guests of King Abdullah, according to Saudi English-language daily the Arab News.

She wouldn’t comment on her grandson’s policies, but when asked to comment on his chances for a second term, she said, “Allah alone knows, it is a matter of the unknown future.”

The son of Obama’s maternal aunt, Musa Ismail, who is at Madinah Islamic University in Saudi Arabia and was acting as spokesman for the family party, told the paper that he felt he spiritually belonged to Saudi Arabia.

An August poll by the Pew Research Center found “a substantial and growing number” — nearly one in five Americans — saying that Obama is a Muslim. Obama says he is Christian, and 34 percent of poll respondents said they believed he was, while 43 percent responded “don’t know.”

“There is a mechanism and a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly,” Obama told NBC in August in response to the poll.

“I will always put my money on the American people and I’m not going to be worrying too much about whatever rumors are floating out there,” he said. “If I spend all my time chasing after that, then I wouldn’t get much done.” Obama’s grandmother tells paper she prays for president’s conversion to Islam

Asia BB caught between Silly Mullahs and Secular Fascists

Muhammed's name (????) with Salat phrase (??? ...

Image via Wikipedia

This poor lady is unfortunate in the sense that her case has been caught in the fight between two classes of ignorant bigots. On one side we have ignorant silly Mullahs while on the other side are secular fascists. Mullahs are clearly aloof to the true understanding of the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In this particular case, for example, the lady admitted that she made a mistake while she was in an emotional state after she was abused by a few Muslims ladies. But she has apologized to every one for her mistake.

We can imagine what the Prophet (PBUH) would do had he been alive during this time. Remember, our Prophet (PBUH) was very kind and forgiving. He (PBUH) never had a personal grudge against any one – not even against the people who abused and tortured him for long or even tried to kill him (PBUH). His mission was not to punish people but rather his every effort was aimed at only one thing, and that was to save every human being from the hell-fire. I am sure that he (peace be upon him) would have given a pardon to this lady too. There are many narrations about the incidents when persons came and tried to abuse the Prophet (PBUH) in front of every one present. In some cases, the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) advanced to punish the offender but the Prophet (PBUH) stopped them from doing any harm. Many people got impressed by the kindness of our Prophet (PBUH) and became Muslim. That is the true spirit of Islam.

The members of other mafia, the liberal fascists, are trying to use this case to abolish the blasphemy law in Pakistan. These silly liberals think the problem is the law itself and that is far from the logic and reality. Any valid law is aimed at dealing a certain situation in which one party is aggrieved. The law is meant to provide justice by penalizing/punishing the offending party. If no law exists to discipline the society then the crime breeds itself and anarchy spreads. If the blasphemy law, for example, did not exist or is annulled now, people would start revenging against real or perceived offenders of committing blasphemy. That situation is not acceptable at all to any law abiding society. It is much better to prosecute any accused in the court of law and brought to justice (that may include acquittal too). The most important thing to do is to ensure that the blasphemy law is not abused. The persons responsible for the false charges must be punished severely. If only a few Mullahs who are making a fuss out of this very serious legal issue could be prosecuted and punished adequately, that will be very reassure to the respected members of our minorities that the justice is for every one. Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey

Bigoted Islamphobe VS Naipaul dumped from EU Writers Parliament

Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey

V.S. Naipaul's polemic against Muslims and Islam seeded racism in Europe

I for one was enthralled when V. S. Naipaul began getting world attention. I even went out and bought is first book. Then disappointment set in–as we noticed his speeches, article and wrods. He was defending colonialism and openly speaking against Muslims and Islam. Mr. V.S. Naipaul could have used his fame and prestige to fight racism and bigotry. He actually used it to fan racism against Africans and bigotry against Muslims. His deep rooted bigoted pathology took him to the darkest corners of his racist thinking. He is a prolific writer, but his writing genius could not hide his dark side. Once the world discovered his darkest thoughts, the writers of the world rejected him. His best shining moment was the notoriety given to him right after 911. However that brief period did not last long.

Now his bigotry is catching up with him. He is being debunked in Africa and also in Europe. In other words V.S. Naipaul did not use his fifteen minutes of fame properly–and he blew it. He is increasingly shunned by Africans, and Muslim. The current snub against him by the European Parliament is just the tip of  the iceberg. He is reviled in Africa.

  • “Africa is not a fun place, you know. A fun place is somewhere that lifts the spirits, that cossets the senses. I don’t think that can be said of the Africa I traveled in.”
  • In Britain, his latest book has received some scathing reviews for its depiction of Africans, their rituals and behavior.
  • The literary world has become increasingly uncomfortable with Naipaul and his politics and his cold, uncompromising views on Africa and Islam. He has been described, among many other things, as a colonialist apologist and a racist.
  • “The political reviews, they are about me. In a way my reputation has become that of the curmudgeon,” he said.
  • His 1981 book “Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey,” revealed the emergence of a dangerous, fundamentalist Islam. It was rejected by many intellectuals as hard-line and one-sided.

VS Naipaul has has been dumped from a major literary event opening in Istanbul tomorrow after Turkish writers threatened a boycott because of his presence.

The row started over Naipaul’s invitation to give the opening speech at the European Writers’ Parliament (EWP), the brainchild of novelists Orhan Pamuk and José Saramago, which aims to bring together authors from across Europe to debate key issues of the contemporary literary scene. But several Turkish writers expressed outrage at the invitation, citing hostile comments Naipaul made about Islam nearly a decade ago.

Naipaul, who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 2001, caused controversy that same year by his remarks about Islam at a London reading from his book, Half a Life. The writer compared the religion to colonialism, saying Islam “has had a calamitous effect on converted peoples. To be converted you have to destroy your past, destroy your history. You have to stamp on it, you have to say ‘my ancestral culture does not exist, it doesn’t matter’.”

The Turkish poet and philosopher Hilmi Yavuz said Naipaul had “insulted” Muslims. He asked: “Will the consciences of our writers be at ease when sitting at the same table as VS Naipaul?” Fellow writer Cihan Aktas said: “The disgust he feels for Muslims in his books is appalling. I cannot attend the event given all of this.”

Ahmet Kot, literary director of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, which is running the author event, expressed surprise at the controversy. “I was expecting to get positive reactions for bringing together people with different views,” Kot said. Nevertheless, a joint statement from the EWP and Naipaul’s literary agency, Andrew Wylie, said the 78-year-old had withdrawn from the event “by mutual agreement” yesterday, after the “politicisation” of the conference in the Turkish media had “altered the original conception of the event and Sir VS Naipaul‘s contribution to it as a celebrated author”.

Naipaul, a Trinidadian of Indian descent, is the author of acclaimed novels including A House for Mr Biswas and the Booker prize-winning In a Free State, as well as a memoir of his life in England, The Enigma of Arrival. Awarding him the Nobel, the Swedish Academy praised his writing for its “incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories”. He has long been a controversial fixture on the literary stage. In addition to his notorious public feud with fellow Trinidadian and Nobel laureate Derek Walcott, he has ignited furores on the issues of race and religion throughout his career. In his 1964 novel An Area of Darkness, he painted a highly critical portrait of India, while his reflections on Africa in his book The Masque of Africa, published earlier this year, were described as both “compellingly insightful” and “often brutal and sometimes downright rude”.

Though Naipaul is no longer attending the event, other illustrious names on the EWP programme include Vikram Seth, Hari Kunzru and Jason Goodwin. The event will run until Saturday 27 November, and is set to discuss such topics as the cultural commoditisation of books and literature tailored for mass consumption, as well as how globalisation, the digital era and multiculturalism have affected the conventional boundaries of literature.

Imran Khan, December 2007

Blasphemy Laws: Letter to Maseehi Brothers and Sisters

Imran Khan, December 2007

Imran Khan has taken a principled stand on stopping the abuse of the Blasphemy Laws

It is unconscionable that we hurtle from one crisis to the next one on our minorities. Maybe should move beyond press releases and hold a summit with the Christian leaders and come up with long term solutions. The article address some core issues.

OPEN LETTER TO MASEEHI BROTHERS AND SISTERS:

Dear Maseehi Brothers and Sisters:

The recent death sentence of a Pakistani Christian woman, Asia Bibi, has once again brought to light the misuse and abuse of the ambiguous Blasphemy Laws. Asia Bibi has been accused for blasphemy against Islam under section 295B of the Pakistani Penal Code, by Additional Sessions Court in District Sheikhupura. This law encourages certain elements which institutionalize intolerance in the name of religion and spread social persecution and legal discrimination.  As it stands, this law with its ambiguity harms Pakistan and its’ citizens.

Such news emanating from Pakistan hinders its stature in rest of the world, which in turn negatively impacts its economic stability and trade practices. The Blasphemy Laws have not only been used to target minorities in Pakistan; Muslims of different religious schools of thought have also been targeted by these controversial laws. A study by the National Commission for Justice and Peace reports that a total of 964 people had been charged under the Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan from 1986 to 2009. Out of these, 479 were Muslims, 340 Ahmedis, 119 Christians, 14 Hindus, and 10 of other religions. It should be noted that as of yet none of those who have been charged under the Laws have been executed.

Last July, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif while overturning a blasphemy case said ‘the treatment meted out to the woman was an insult to humanity and the government, and that civil organizations should be vigilant enough to help such people’.

We are asking Pakistan’s legislators to amend and remove ambiguity and legal discrimination from Section 295 and 298 of the Pakistan Penal Code which covers the blasphemy provisions.  We ask Pakistani politicians not to settle scores or seek political gains in the present crisis, but do what is right for the country and its citizens and to uphold the teachings of Islam and Pakistan’s Constitution, thus treating all citizens as equals.

The Christian woman did not oppose or defend herself in the court and did not present any defense witnesses. the Court ruled against her. Under pressure from Human Right groups in Pakistan, President Zardari is about ready to pardon the Christian woman.

We (Muslims and Christian) need to join forces to work on the long term solution to this issue so that persecution of Christians ends, and end now. We have to work together on short-term and long term issues. All indications are the Asia issue will be resolved amicably. However, how do we work together to prevent another Asia?

1) Hint as a brother: The opposition should be for “ABUSE of blasphemy laws”–or we will not succeed.

According to Shariah Laws–the person who places wrong and false accusations must face the same verdict. For example if it is proven that the charges are false–then the person who put the false charges will face the death penalty. This is not enforced, and would be colossal deterrent to false charges.

The problem in Pakistan is abuse of laws and corruption. The abominable persecution of minorities must end.

2) I was astonished that one Maseehi brother was opposing the separate electorate for Christians. They have gone to the Supreme Court to end Separate Electorate Laws. This wrong tactic will not help the Christians. According to present laws any Christian can run on any seat anywhere and get elected in open elections—and Christians have to be represented in parliament per their numerical numbers. Thus each Christian has two votes–one for adult franchise, and the 2nd one for separate electorate. We must convince our Christian Leadership not to tinker with this or we will have fewer Christian brothers and Sisters in parliament. Separate electorate is good for Christians and this privilege should not be given up. The Muslim League before 1947 struggled and got Separate electorate–the Dalits gave up that right and suffered.

3) The Christians leadership must get together with the leadership of JUI, JI, JUP, Sipah e Sahabah and Fiqah e Jaffriah and explainthe difficulties of the Christian brothers and sisters. If you want, we can assist you in putting together an agenda which is replete with Quran, Hadith, and the system of the government during the time of Hazrat Umar and Hazrat Ali.

We must convince the religious leadership of the ways and means of fixing things that are wrong.

4) The foreign NGOs, Asma Jahangir and others cannot change the laws, it the people of Pakistan that can. Disparaging Islam or Shariah will not change the laws. Full enforcement of the laws of Pakistan and preventing abuse will fix things. However Secularism is not the answer and it will not be accepted by the people of Pakistan.

5) We (Christians and Muslims) must work together to educate the people of Pakistan. We heard stories that the dispute started over Asia sister touching water utensils and then escalated from there. We have to educate the illiterate people in the villages about the dignity of human beings. While Watch Tower and the hundreds of missionary schools in Pakistan do a good job in teaching the students–they have failed to educate Pakistanis about the equality of human beings and dignity of human beings. Unless and until we do that, we will fail in our mission.

Hopefully this trauma will be over soon.

Here is the Covenant from Prophet Muhammad to the Christians.

In 628 C.E. Prophet Muhammad (s) granted a Charter of Privileges to the monks of St. Catherine Monastery in Mt. Sinai. It consisted of several clauses covering all aspects of human rights including such topics as the protection of Christians, freedom of worship and movement, freedom to appoint their own judges and to own and maintain their property, exemption from military service, and the right to protection in war

An English translation of that document is presented below.

This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.

No compulsion is to be on them.

Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.

No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims‘ houses.

Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.

No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.

The Muslims are to fight for them.

If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.

Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.

No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world).

This charter of privileges has been honored and faithfully applied by Muslims throughout the centuries in all lands they ruled.

Here is a press statement from the PTI.

PRESS RELEASE ISLAMABAD

Mr. Imran Khan, Chairman, PTI has condemned the attempt of the PPP government to make

political capital out of the unfortunate case of Aasia Bibi.

Mr. Khan termed blasphemy law (Section 295-C of PPC), which has been misused over the years

to unfairly target minorities, against the spirit of Islam and Constitution of Pakistan. He said

that teachings of Islam are very clear on standards of justice being equal for Muslims and non-

Muslims. It is about time that religious scholars, minority leaders and political parties should

sit together and amend this law with consensus and save the poor victims from the agony and

suffering caused to them due to the misuse of the law.

Mr. Khan expressed his trust in Pakistan’s judiciary and said that the case should go through the

appeal process in the Lahore High Court.

Medieval Christian views on Muhammad

Our Sister Asia Bibi must be protected

Medieval Christian views on Muhammad

By: Ahmed Qureshi

… and we Pakistanis need to stand by her. I endorse capital punishment for those who bash Islam and its sacred symbols. And no one bashes Islam in Pakistan. Certainly not our Pakistani Christian brothers and sisters whose forefathers played a great role in Pakistan Independence Movement.

We own and defend our great religion and our great Prophet. But harassing a poor Pakistani Christian woman in the name of blasphemy is not justice. The great, fair-minded leaders of Islam, like Omar and Ali, would never endorse this. Shame on these half-educated mullahs who can’t offer a word of support to a weak and poor woman being wrongly accused of blasphemy.

Would anyone dare utter a word against our great religion in our country, let alone a poor and weak woman who earns a living as a domestic helper?

We need Omar R.A.’s and Ali R.A.’s justice in this case. And we Pakistani Muslims must force half-educated clergy in groups such as Sunni Tehreek [I have more respect for Jamaat Islami and Tanzeem Islami] to stop making uneducated comments in this case. We are no good if we can’t protect the weak and the wrongly accused among us. Unfortunately, because of the inflammatory statements by the uneducated, a minority of westernized and secular-minded NGOs, funded by foreign money, are seizing this opportunity to bash Pakistan and Islam. PPPP Senator Sherry Rehman wants to abolish the blasphemy law. That’s fine. But she never uttered a word against the injustice done to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui? No comparison between her case and that of Asia’s. The point is that the few westernized and secularist Pakistanis will try to seize this case to bash Pakistan and our great religion. Asia needs our help against a stupid law and a fake case. But the champions of her case must be Muslim scholars first and foremost, and if not then all the rest of Pakistanis who know how great and tolerant and open-minded Islam is even if these half-educated mullahs know nothing about it.

Blasphemy law was originally enacted against a sect, Qadiyanis, who claimed Mohammad, peace be upon him, is not the last Prophet. Ordinary good-hearted Pakistanis are misled by the mullahs into believing this law is somehow a hedge against Islam-bashers in the West, such as the people behind the infamous Danish cartoons. That’s not true. Our laws can’t be implemented on those outside Pakistan. And no one inside Pakistan can dare insult Islam. Case closed.

We will never be secular. We are modern, and we are Muslim and Islam has always been a big-hearted religion. This is our opportunity to prove otherwise to others in the world who heard the ignorant statements of a few mullahs in this case. These mullahs need to be told to shut up. We defend our religion. And we do this by not tolerating a word against our religion and by defending the innocent and the wrongly accused.

P.S. I tell the few mullahs who exploit this case: Honor Pakistani Christians. Remember that they sided with Pakistan when even some Muslim leaders were sitting in the laps of the Brits and Indians. Also remember that one of the wives of our Prophet, the Umm al-Momineen, Maria, was Christian. She became Muslim after marrying our Prophet. Her name was Christian but out of respect for her, our Prophet didn’t let her change her name and insisted she keep her original Christian name. Also remember when the Great Omar R.A. conquered Jerusalem, Al-Quds, he refused to pray in a church because he was afraid Muslims might seize it later and convert it into a mosque. Thanks to him, that church stands today side by side with a mosque that was built on a ground near the church where Omar prayed in the open. Asia is our sister. If Omar R.A. was here today, he would have given her justice no matter what some half-educated mullahs of ‘sunni tehreek’ or whatever this group is named might have said.. Asia Bibi Is Our Sister

Jamia Millia Islamia

Dalai Lama says 'Islam one of the great religions of the world'

Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi: The Dalai Lama Tuesday hailed Islam as one of the great religions of the world, saying true jihad was about fighting “negative emotions” within oneself.

Speaking after receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) degree from Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia university, the Tibetan spiritual leader said that some mischievous elements were bringing a bad name to Islam.

“I defend Islam,” the Dalai Lama said, “we should not generalize Islam due to few mischievous people. Such mischievous people are there among Hindus, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, and all religions”.

“Islam is one of the very important religions for many centuries, in the past, present and future it is the hope of millions of people,” he said.

“Some Muslims in this country (India) told me genuine Islam practitioner must extend love and compassion to all creatures. If a person creates bloodshed they are not Muslims,” he said adding, “the meaning of jihad is a struggle within ourselves against all negative emotions like anger, hatred, attachment, that creates problem in the society”.

He said though he received similar honour from many universities around the world, he was particularly honoured to receive it from a renowned Islamic institution of higher learning in India.
NEW DELHI: For Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, receiving a honorary doctorate degree from Jamia Millia Islamia, “a university with a Muslim flavour”, was special.

“This degree from a university with Muslim flavour is special as I am committed to religious harmony. Since September 11, I have been defending Islam. For a few misguided people we should not blame a religion. Islam is one of the important religions in the planet, and hope for millions of people,” said the Dalai Lama on Tuesday.

The Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) was conferred on the 14th Dalai Lama by vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung at Jamia`s annual convocation. Union HRD, science and technology and communication and IT minister Kapil Sibal was present.

In a short message, Dalai Lama urged the students to strive towards a peaceful world. He started his speech by requesting those present not to misunderstand him for use of wrong words because “my English is not so good”. “We should not generalize Muslims for a few mischievous followers of Islam. There are mischievous elements in all religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism. Problems we are facing in the world today are our own creation. To create a harmonious society, we need young people with vision and for that education and moral ethics should go hand in hand,” said Dalai Lama.

Paying tribute to the spiritual leader, Jung deviated from the conventional vice-chancellor`s address and urged those present “to soak in the presence of His Holiness and the values he shares with our ancient land”.

Lauding India`s pluralism, Jung said: “The Jamia envisioned by its founders, was a pioneering teaching institution that would make Muslims full partners in the great project that is Indian pluralism. This pluralism is sometimes simplified into Hindu-Muslim amity. But this is to diminish the grandeur of the pluralist ideal.”

A total of 3,529 degrees and diplomas were awarded to students from various faculties and departments of the university for successful completion of their postgraduate, undergraduate and diploma programmes in the academic session 2008-09. The university also gave 147 gold medals to toppers in different courses and awarded 127 PhD degrees to research scholars.

Sibal said: “On the education front, I forsee that the number of illiterate people will go down by more than 150 million in absolute numbers. Universalisation of primary education will be a reality. Every child will receive school education. The stock of graduates in the country will double to around 100 million. There will be around 1,000 universities of all types with nearly 50,000 colleges. Ten of our institutions/ universities will feature among the top 100 in the world by 2020.”

Pakistan doing the right thing: Amending 'Blasphemy Law' to prevent abuse

Human Rights Watch logo

Pakistani Protesters–most of them Muslim, are holding protests demanding the release of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman who has been sentenced to death for blasphemy, at a rally in Lahore November 21, 2010.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will amend the Blasphemy Laws to prevent abuse because scrapping the legislation could fuel militancy, a government minister said on Tuesday.

The law, which carries the death penalty for insulting Islam or its Prophet Mohammad, has come under the spotlight this month after a court sentenced a Christian mother of four, Asia Bibi, to death in a case stemming from a village dispute.

Widespread media attention on the case has led to renewed appeals by human rights groups for the repeal of the law but Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti said that would not happen.

“(Repeal) is not being considered though we are considering changing it so that misuse of the law should be stopped,” Bhatti told Reuters.

The law enjoys widespread support in Pakistan, which is more than 95 per cent Muslim, and politicians are loathe to be seen as soft on the defense of the religion.

Blasphemy convictions are common although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal.

Bhatti said consultations with Islamic clerics and representatives of religious minorities on amending the law would soon be held.

He said repealing it was not being considered because that could provoke religious parties and militants who want to oppose the pro-US civilian government.

“We have to analyse what the reaction of those having intolerant attitudes will be,” Bibi said. “At this point our aim is to stop its misuse.”

Critics say the law can be misused by people making false accusations against rivals.

Liberal and secular groups say the law discriminates against religious minorities who make up roughly 4 per cent of Pakistan’s 170 million population. Most members of minorities are Christian.

Bhatti said an initial inquiry into the case of the Christian mother suggested she had not committed blasphemy but was falsely accused after a quarrel.

Bibi, the first woman sentenced to death for blasphemy, has appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari to pardon her.

“It will take few more days. We are looking into different things, not just pardon. She could get relief from the courts,” Bhatti said.

Authorities were providing Bibi with security in jail and her family had also moved for safety reasons, he said.

New York-based Human Right Watch has said the blasphemy law and government’s failure to address religious persecution by extremist groups effectively enable atrocities against minorities. –

Asia BB should be pardoned for any and all “crimes” immediately.

We don’t believe any of the charges. Where there is smoke, there is fire–but we disagree with the abuse of the law.

The law has to be fundamentally changed and not used for prosecuting Christians and Hindus for no reason at all. Shariah Law protect the rights of the minorities. This law abuses them. This is not Shariah Law-this is Zia Ul Haq‘s bastardization of Pakistani laws and it is Anti-Islam.

We must cherish our minorities–and almost all Christians I know are patriotic Pakistani citizens–who love Pakistan. We have to protect them and raise our voice in their favor. Jamil’s letter was painful for me to read.

THE HAGUE, NetherlandsGeert Wilders, who built his popularity on his maverick image, has been hit with a series of embarrassments from other mavericks in his own party who are accused of misconduct or violent behaviour before becoming freshman lawmakers.

The scandals swirling around Wilders’ Freedom Party highlight the fragility of the new minority coalition government, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who needs the support of each one of Wilders’ parliament seats to stay in power in the Netherlands.

In the latest incident, a member of Wilders’ Freedom Party quit parliament Thursday amid reports he had hit an athlete with a spiked running shoe years ago and that a company he was involved with was fined for misleading consumers.

James Sharpe said he was quitting to spare his family from the intense scrutiny that members of Wilders’ party are being subjected to in the media.

He will be replaced by another party member after handing back his seat to Wilders, whose popularity is based largely on his tough anti-Islam rhetoric.

Last weekend, another Freedom Party legislator, Eric Lucassen, came under fire after reporters dug up a 2002 conviction for engaging in sexual relations with a subordinate when he was in the army. He also was twice fined for public order offences and harassing his neighbours.

On Monday, Wilders refused to fire Lucassen after Lucassen refused to relinquish his seat if he were forced to leave the party.

In one of the most significant setbacks to his meteoric rise in popularity, Wilders was forced to apologize to parliament and to his voters this week for the Lucassen scandal.

Another of Wilders’ lawmakers has conceded lying on his resume about having been a primary school principal.

Wilders has run into trouble with his hand-picked parliament members because, unlike traditional Dutch parties with deep roots, the Freedom Party is new and lacks a national organization capable of screening parliamentary candidates. It is essentially a one-man show.

Rutte, who took power after national elections in June, leads a coalition of his VVD party and the Christian Democrats. However, the two parties only have 52 of parliament’s 150 seats so he needs the support of all 24 Freedom Party lawmakers to enact legislation.

Dutch lawmakers can remain in parliament even if they are kicked out of their party. If Wilders had ejected Sharpe from his party the lawmaker could remain as an independent and Rutte would no longer be guaranteed a majority in key votes.

In a text message to The Associated Press, Wilders said of Sharpe: “I respect his decision to leave parliament.”

Wilders broke with Rutte’s VVD party in 2004 over its support for Turkey‘s membership in the European Union. In his first election, Wilders won 9 seats, and nearly tripled that in this year’s vote, thanks almost exclusively to Wilders’ tough anti-Islam rhetoric that tapped into a groundswell of resentment among many Dutch at the country’s growing Muslim minority.

Wilders’ popularity kept growing even after he was put on trial for hate speech for his anti-Islam comments. The trial was aborted last month after Wilders’ lawyer accused judges of bias and will restart next year. The Ikhan Ul Muslimeen or Muslim Brotherhood controls 20% of the seats in the Egyptian parliament. It has faced arrests and harassment by the Egyptian government. Even the US fears violence during the polls and has asked President Hasni Mubarak to keep things cool.

The Ikhwan works hard to distant itself from Al-Qaeda and its website reflect that ubiquitously.

Secretary General for the Muslim Brotherhood Dr. Mahmoud Hussein accused the Egyptian government of attempting to tarnish the image of the Muslim Brotherhood in the media and hindering the group’s efforts to publicize their ideology and principles to the Egyptian people.

WASHINGTON  - The United States pledged Monday to support free and fair parliamentary elections in Egypt later this month, after Egyptian human rights groups warned of political crackdowns on the opposition. Registration of political candidates for the People’s Assembly November 28 elections closed last week.

“The United States remains committed to supporting free and impartial elections in Egypt,” State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, holding the Egyptian government to its own commitment to “fair and transparent elections.”

“We welcome the government of Egypt’s stated commitment to expand political participation and ensure free and transparent elections, including facilitating domestic monitoring by civil society groups.”
The spokesman called on Egypt to ensure peaceful political gatherings, unhindered voter education and participation campaigns, as well as balanced media coverage for all candidates.

“An open electoral process would include a credible and impartial mechanism for reviewing election-related complaints, a domestic election observation effort according to international standards and the presence of international observers,” Crowley added.

Last week, the Egyptian Forum of Independent Human Rights Organizations said a government crackdown on opposition candidates will prevent a fair parliamentary election.

Gamal Eid, the director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, noted the broad powers granted to the interior ministry and “restrictions on independent candidates belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood and those who splintered from the National Democratic Party.”

The Muslim Brotherhood, which controls a fifth of parliament, has accused the government of arresting dozens of its members since the country’s largest opposition movement announced it would run for election.

Secretary General for the Muslim Brotherhood Dr. Mahmoud Hussein accused the Egyptian government of attempting to tarnish the image of the Muslim Brotherhood in the media and hindering the group’s efforts to publicize their ideology and principles to the Egyptian people.

In an interview on the “BBC” satellite channel Hussein asserted that the group does not seek power nor does it want to rule stressing that the country’s current atmosphere is not suitable for such an undertaking.

He added the Muslim Brotherhood simply calls for a civil state based on Islamic Law ‘Sharia’.

Regarding the group’s renowned motto “Islam is the solution” Hussein highlighted that this does not mean that civilians must convert to Islam. He maintained that in fact the Islamic Law acknowledges and respects that Copts in an Islamic nation will follow their religion’s laws and beliefs.

According to the MB website, the Muslim Brotherhood encourages the youth to be strong self-reliant making optimal use of resources. This can be accomplished only through political reform, and a comprehensive development and rehabilitation, in the educational system, scientific research and the overall development. Moreover the encouraging of full integration with the Arab and Islamic countries and the cooperation with the other world countries on the basis of partnership, and equality aiming at maintain security, tranquility, peace, truth, justice, equality and good for all peoples.

Ikhwanweb interviews Prof. Mohamed Habib, the Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Ikhwanweb: Will the Brotherhood’s assuming of power lead to instability in the region?

Habib: Firstly: At this time I believe if elections are held I can say that Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood will not get more than 30% if the elections are judged to be free, fair and transparent. The reasons are evident because of complications.

Secondly: The movement is counting on the Egyptian public and we can not compete for power at the moment. However, the Brotherhood can compete for power only when the positive values dominate the negative; with regards to the Egyptian people. The interest of the general public must be seen as more significant than the private and personal interests. Respecting the free will of the public along with the willingness to giving and sacrificing time, effort and money will result in the changing political and legal climate allowing for the free formation of political parties.

Thirdly: Intervention by the force of public opinion, are the Egyptians only hope and the only chance of establishing democracy in which the people have the ability to impose their own free will and choose their governors, legislators and the program that carries and reflects their hopes; this can successfully be done by revealing their dreams and their aspirations through the ballot box. The rulers should be held accountable for the misconduct and punished if they have violated the law, neglected their duties or deviated from the program in which they have vowed to accomplish.

Fourth: The Brotherhood, in fact, has announced for a long time the consent to bind by the rules and mechanisms of democracy which is based on political plurality, peaceful transfer of power where the citizens should be the source of authorities. We believe there should be open and healthy dialogue in which democracy is practiced comparable to that of the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood both in the selection of leaders at all levels and the determining of their positions across the political institutions. Freedom of expression, criticism and the free flow of information are all guaranteed and a clear indication that the movement is committed to the mechanisms of democracy.

Fifth: The MB promotes the establishing of a civil state with Islamic laws, not a religious state similar to that which prevailed in medieval Christian Europe… In Islam, there exists no priest, priesthood, or central spiritual authority nor anything corresponding to ordination or taking holy orders. The infallibility is only to the prophets and honored apostles.

Sixth: The Muslim Brotherhood advocates the building of a nation that has three authorities, legislative, executive and judicial authorities, with distinct responsibilities for each power.

Ikhwanweb: Will this pose a threat to the international community?

Habib: The Muslim Brotherhood encourages the youth to be strong self-reliant making optimal use of resources.

The controlling of the world’s resources by the United States poses threats to the international community where it has had almost full control over the international institutions and the creating conflict and border disputes, among countries in many regions of the world and in particular our region. Unfortunately, the United States endeavors to have control over the new oil wealth in order to ensure that the decisions and positions of the world’s biggest emerging economies aspire to the United States. This, in turn, poses a severe threat to the international community similar to what took place with the US brutal invasion of Afghanistan, the barbaric occupation of Iraq and the tragic and gruesome conflicts in Somalia.

Zionist schemes also pose a broader threat to the Arab national security and the security of the whole world as a whole. This entity was founded on the illegal occupation of the usurped Arabs, Palestinian and Muslim lands, using all means and tools especially the armed force. It is no secret that the Zionist state of Israel perpetrates brutal and bloody massacres, advocating the abhorrent policy of ‘ethnic cleansing’, which is a form of genocide’, liquidation and extermination of the Palestinian people which has taken place during the past decades in addition to the ongoing expulsion and displacement and the bulldozing of the Palestinian homes.

The Brotherhood can not forget the ever-expanding settlement, the raciest apartheid wall, denial of the refugees’ right of return, and the continuous attempts to Judaizing Jerusalem as well as the detention of 11 thousand Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. There is no doubt that Israel’s recent savage aggression against Gaza has been nothing short of a Holocaust and genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip by the Zionist military machine as they used bombs and explosive devices which are considered illegal internationally. In December 2008 – January 2009 attacks on Gaza and the aggressions which took place are considered as a catalyst for tension, turmoil and upheaval which could explode at anytime. Unless immediate steps are taken by the international community to rectify the situation, a disaster is imperative and this is the real danger.

Ikhwanweb: With the coup d’état Hamas staged in Palestine (Hamas’s rise to power and the international community’s economic blockade of the Strip) is it possible the Brotherhood follow these footsteps in Egypt or are the circumstances different?

Habib: The circumstances of course are radically different in Egypt and Palestine and also between Egypt’s Brotherhood and Palestine’s Hamas. Palestine is an oppressed nation under the guns of a barbaric and abhorrent racist colonial settler state and this is the essence of the problem. Although the territory of Gaza has become part of an independent Arab state, it is still surrounded on all sides by stifling land, air and sea blockades controlling all entrances and exits. We understand the difficulty and sufferings of the Gazans since they have no natural resources.

Ikhwanweb: Will the Brotherhood adopt the strategy of winning the hearts and minds by playing on the public’s emotions, followed later by force ensuring power?

Habib: Islam and its comprehensive ways in which the Muslim Brotherhood endorses, unequivocally rejects adopting the shedding of innocent blood or the use of violence to assume political power. Islam’s method for changing society and reform basically taught by Allah are with wisdom and fair preaching and persuasion.

Quality, perfection, exaltedness and consistency are the most important characteristics of Islam where the form of the argument relies on integrity of thought, fine style, purity, and the sublime goals and nobility making the following of Islam easy.

If we controversially agreed to use violence in assuming power it will give legitimacy to all people to utilize the tools enabling him to have the force to seize the reins of the power hence, the country will remain plagued by permanent disturbances and instability.

Ikhwanweb: If the Muslim Brotherhood were to come to power will they suppress the liberties and overthrow freedom and democracy to obtain power?

Habib: It is impossible since the Brotherhood have tasted the bitterness of oppression and tyranny over the decades of where martyrs have been hung unfairly on the gallows and thousands, detained for many years and brutally tortured where their freedom had been grossly violated. They were innocent committing no offenses, or breaches of the constitution. One of the obligatory duties in Islam is the concept of political freedom. The Muslim community cannot exist without freedom of expression and thought.

Ikhwanweb: What guarantees do the Muslim Brotherhood offer to prove that it is committed to encourage freedom of opinion and expression and a commitment to democracy?

Habib: The Brotherhood practices democracy within their ranks and works in an institutional manner where the electoral process prevails at all levels. The movement permits freedom of thought, criticism, expression, constructive dialogue and exchange of information to enable choice among the alternatives. In fact, the Brotherhood is seeking to form an overall public opinion enabling and supporting the free will of the people actively participating in decision-making and self-determination and this in itself is the strongest guarantee of pluralist democracy.

Ikhwanweb: Will the Brotherhood support a military coup or even civil disobedience aimed at changing the present regime in an effort to alleviate suffering?

Habib: The Brotherhood will support neither, despite this suffering we must endure; we are against all types of coup d’état. The movement seeks peaceful reform acquired through the ballot box in a free, fair and transparent election.

Ikhwanweb: Will the Brotherhood’s rise to power in places like Egypt make another Iran and shed light on the religious state and the international arena?

Habib: There is considerable difference between the Muslim Brotherhood’s Islamic state and Prerevolutionary Iran. Those who belongs to the Ahl al-Sunnah wal Jama`ah disbelieve in the guardianship of the scholars (Wilayat al Faqih) or the belief that Ali should have succeeded Mohammad. By a state the MB indicates that it endorses an unquestioned civil state not a religious state which has three authorities, the legislative, executive and judicial authorities, bearing in mind that the law issued by the People’s Assembly stems from the principles of Islamic law as stipulated in the Egyptian Constitution in Article II.

Ikhwanweb: Will the Brotherhood’s allowing of nuclear technology pose a serious threat to the Western world and the international community and does the movement in any way support the use of nuclear weapons?

Habib: The Brotherhood supports nuclear technology for peaceful purposes but if there are certain countries keen to retain their nuclear weapons to threaten other countries, then it is necessary for the latter to possess this weapon in order to achieve credible nuclear deterrence.
