A rebuttal to Engdahl’s “Back to business in Pakistan”
A call for sanity not to attack Paksitan.
This is with to the fantasy trip by William Engdahl titled “Back to business in Pakistan”. It is exactly this type of nonsensical writing that has landed America into the quagmire in Iraq, the eminent defeat in Afghanistan and a failure in the Middle East. In plain words, it is a crock of bull.
The unmitigated bigoted drivel displays only superficial knowledge about Pakistan, totally lacks any imperious intellect of the nuances of the complex political issues, is totally biased, has serious errors in it and it is typical of the ant-Pakistan hallucinating delirium so pervasive in the minds of the worst columnists. Their’s is an eschatologically obsessed version of events that is trying to make American foreign and domestic policy conterminous with their bigoted blinkered worldview which comminates all those who disagree with them. It is pedagogical to remember and it doesn’t take a pathologist to see that the real intention of this well orchestrated and planned smear campaign is to couple “Islam” with a powerful soubriquet, devoid of any analytical content, conjuring up images of a universally detested past.
Benazir Bhutto was not the knight in shining armor that she is portrayed in the article. Benzir Bhutto and her corrupt and despised husband known as Mr. 10% because of his shady deals rained terror on Karachi and she was the “mother of the Taliban”. It was during her reign that the Taliban took over Afghanistan. It was during the reign of the Zardaris that Murtaza Bhutto (Her brother and rival to the leageacy of Z.A. Bhutto) was murdered in broad daylight two or three days after a public altercation with Mr. Zardari. The Human Rights and Amnesty International reports are testimony to the extra judicial killings and corruption during her two stints as Prime Minister.
There are outstanding Interpol Red Warrants and conviction in Switzerland as well as conviction in Pakistan on Ms. Benazir Bhutto.
Mr. Musharraf had nothing to fear from Benazir Bhutto. It is doubtful that she would have gained a plurality of the votes. Urban Sindh always goes to the MQM. The vote in the Punjab would have been split between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the two wings of the Pakistan Muslim League.
Benzir did not have neither the vote-bank nor the gall, nor the gumption to fulfill her promises made. These were empty promises made to the Americans in a Faustian deal. She could not have delivered on her public statements or her other 5Es (empty promises to the people).
It was Mr. Zardari who did not permit a routine autopsy of the body of Ms. Benazir Bhutto.
The expanded US presence is to train the Frontier Corps. Actual Americans on the ground will create a wave of anti-Americanism. What will they do? Push the insurgents from Afghanistan to the Tribal areas to Swat to Islamabad to Delhi?
The Pakistani people also have some questions for Congress. Pakistan paid $450 million for F-16s. She neither got the planes nor the money, and the planes were resold for additional Dollars to Pakistan. What kind of friendship is this?
More than 1000 Pakistani soldiers have died in the “war on terror”, but India got a Nuclear deal. What kind of friendship is this?
Pakistan has been an ally of the USA for more than 60 years, a cold war ally, a founding member of SEATO and CENTO and currently a Major Non-Nato Ally (MNNA). However Pakistan get lectures to “do more” while the USA is unable to crush her enemies in Afghanistan and the NATO soldiers are unable to provide security to the Mayor of Kabul, the incompetent Mr. Karzai. How about more democracy for the Pashtuns of Afghanistan.
Pakistan was instrumental in defeating the USSR, and liberating Afghanistan. As a reward Pakistan faced multi-faceted sanctions. What kind of friendship is this?
Israel got $30 billion in aid. Pakistan got peanuts for waging this war. What kind of friendship is this?
Mr. Engdahl, we see that you can use a Xerox machine well. The author’s unoriginal parroted, biased and acerbic drivel is worse than his erroneous putrid anti-Pakistan ad hominem. Is there an echo in here? His “master’s voice” can be clearly “heard” and seen in this dictated transcription which emanates from “Big Brother”. The author is good at transliterating regurgitated Neocon claptrap. This abominable soporific screed is typical of the ignominious anti-Pakistan cacophonous tripe so pervasive in the photo-copying columnists of the Xerox variety, that are nurtured in the augean stables of shoddy yellow journalism.

Let us discuss the heart of the thesis. American boots on the ground. Will this solve everything? Are we looking at better results than Iraq?
Incursions may ignite a fire that may not be containable.
Do we want to deal with cardboard caricatures, or do we deal with reality?
One forgets that this is the fourth largest country in the world, nuclear armed and in certain regions of the country the entire population is armed. Does sanity suggest that we antagonize 160 million people? For what and for whom? For getting OBL? One of the worst case scenarios is if Americans are taken hostages and then attempts are made to rescue them. This would be embarrassing for the USA and Pakistan.
The risk vs. reward may not be worth it.
Then there is always the possibility of a catastrophe where many Pakistani civilians die as a result of a strike. An accident could occur. If the Pakistanis are not aware of a strike missiles could be launched which could start a regional war. Pakistan and India are nuclear armed. In such a case, all bets are off, and the result would be horrible for the planet.
Pakistan has a 10 division well trained and well equipped army, one of the most professional armies in the world. Most of the officers were trained in the UK, USA, and Australia etc. The army has a centralized control with intense loyalty to the officer corps. More than 500,00 soldiers are in reserve, and like Israel all Pakistani high-schoolers (11th and 12th grades) are trained in basic two year military training called NCC (National Cadet Corp). The army is armed to the teeth, with local arms production M-16, Kalashnikovs, heavy artillery and now airplanes (knockoff of F-16s called JF-17 Thunder). They also have one of the best missile programs in the world, better than that of India.
“The Regime” consists of the army support, an elected National Assembly and Senate with representation of all the political parties including a heavy and intense presence of the MMA, PML and PPP opposition.
Now to eliminate all this would require a full scale invasion. 400,000 American soldiers and mercenaries (contractors) could not do it in Iraq, which has one fifth of the population and was sanctioned for ten years.
Now let us talk about invading Pakistan. Whose army is going to do it? One will need at least two million soldiers to occupy the country partially, and no one in 5000 years has been able to hold it.
The conclusion of last year’s game, said one participant, was that there are no palatable ways to forcibly ensure the security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons — and that even studying scenarios for intervention could worsen the risks by undermining U.S.-Pakistani cooperation. “It’s an unbelievably daunting problem,” said this participant, a former Pentagon official who asked not to be identified because of the game’s secrecy. The contingency plans that do exist, he added, are at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Tampa, and are in “very close hold.” Even so, he said, planners really haven’t developed answers for how to deal with nuclear weapons stashed in Pakistan’s big cities and high mountain ranges. washingtonpost.
As a result of U.S. government studies of the nuclear issue, Pakistani officials have come to believe a U.S. intervention “is a real threat now,” Khan said. The Pakistani military almost certainly has taken steps to forestall such a raid, he said, such as creating phony bunkers that contain dummy nuclear warheads. He estimated that Pakistan’s current arsenal now contains about 80 to 120 genuine warheads, roughly double the figure usually cited by outside experts.
It may actually make things worse, to attempt that sort of thing,” agreed Zia Mian, a Princeton University physicist and expert on nuclear proliferation in South Asia. Among other negative repercussions, he predicted, any U.S. effort to secure Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal “would really increase anti-Americanism.” washingtonpost

Before the country is attacked many unnamed capitals and cities may go up in smoke, the Gulf of Hormuz would be blocked (ending supply of oil to the world), the Suez Canal would be choked, and many oilfields would be radio active for the next ten thousand years. This would mean the end of life as we know it. MAD (mutually assured destruction is the wave of the future).Any takers?
Pakistan may also decide to re-realign itself with Russia and China and leave the USA high and dry.
Peace is the only way. Let us build bridges of harmony and rethink the strategy of war and “taking out nukes”
