American media offers the same stale, retrograde fare that’s been used by USSR owned state, semi-state networks for decades. The news leads with the daily antics of the President and insignificant machinations of the legislature followed by celebrity and “human interest” stories and gossip. The Same hackneyed talking heads appear to disparage some other enemy Eurosia or Oceania or Islam. Our Murdock owned British and American media still act like proselytizing missionaries determined to force their views on far flung countries. As “The Nation” commercials depict –our obsequies press does not have the temerity to stand up to the lobbies.

PERPETUAL MIMITIC WARFARE: Who has the impudence to show a backbone against those that want perpetual mimetic warfare? The sickly scent of defeat wafting over the Neocon crusade has permeated into the fabric of American airwaves emaciating our freedoms. The resurrection of the Socratic injunctions (against democracy) and Palto’s lectures against women (yes, strange but true) and these series of Peloponnesian wars are debasing our flag, and almost destroying the free republic and the ideals for which it stands. Far far away from the apocryphal atoll of sanity and our beloved American Camelot is the acquiescent press the atrophying legislative and a subservient judicial branch. Unless and until our media drops the Neocon jargon it will never be able to unshackle itself from our current Orwellian nightmare.

SOME HISTORY….THE ASSASSINATION OF DEMOCRACY IN RAWALPINDI: THE CIA INTERFERENCE BEGAN IN 1950 

Liaqat Ali Khan was killed in broad daylight in Rawalpindi. This is what Zeba Zubair in Mutiny to Mountbatten says about the assassination:

 “On 16 October 1951 at a Public Meeting in Rawalpindi, ‘a blind shot from the blue’ silenced the voice of Quaid-e-Millat, Nawabzadah Liaqat Ali Khan. Another epoch of history was at an end. On a sad day for this new nation it was as if a mighty powe in heaven was also reacting in anger at the cowardly act of mankind. The sky of Karachi had a peculiar and ominous orange-yellow colouring and the people felt resltell at the starnge weather…” 

This is what the Daily dawn of October 17th, 1951 said:

 ‘With the kalima on his lips, Liaqat , Successor of the Quaid-e-Azam Prime Minister. Leader unparalleled, is dead. The man who killed him was not just an individual he was the symbol of that deadly enmity of the enemies of Islam who have always wanted to destroy Pakistan. We name only one but we feel this in our heart with the certain flash and convinced truth. We grieve for Liaqat–martyr to Pakistan and Islam; but we proclaim over Liaqat’s still unburied body: Pakistan shall live, and whoever of her servants may fall in her service, this citadel of Islam guarded by 70 million worshippers of Allah will never fall. Begum Liaqat, Ashraf and Akbar, we shall not try to console you in your grief in consolable, but know this, that you beloved husband and father had died in glory and as comes only to the chosen of God. Pakistan Zindabad (Dawn Editorial, 17 October, 1951)” 

Even in his last moments he was thinking of his nation. Other then remembering God and reciting the kalima, his last words were “Allah Pakistan ko apni amaan mai~n rakhay “(God save Pakistan). Every Pakistani of that generation absolutely remembers where he was and what he was doing when that fatal shot was announced on Radio Pakistan. Every patriotic Pakistani cried that day.

A similar fate ended the life of Benazir Bhutto. There are a lot of questions and very few answers.

The youngest Foreign Minister of Pakistan, the mercurial Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was building Pakistani bridges with China. He wanted to close the US base in Pakistan, which he succeed in doing. President Johnson told President Ayub Khan  ”Bhutto must Go! Bhutto must Go!”. Soon thereafter Bhutto resigned a created the Pakistan Peoples Party. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was threatened by Henry Kissinger that if he did not cease and desist in pursuing Nuclear weapons, “a horrible example would be made of him”. Ironically Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged by General Zia ul Haq, a General supported by the USA for more than a decade.

1980s and CURRENT SOUTH ASIA: Pakistan was used by the USA in the First Afghan War against the USSR. India at the time was on the losing side of the battle and the USSR was not only defeated, it imploded. Analysts see major cavities.  Today there is an overwhelming body of evidence that a similar fate faces “India.” India’s major problem is not a nuclear armed Pakistan, nor 160 million belligerent Pakistanis or even 160 million Bangledeshis nor the 160 million Indian Muslims. India’s problem is the 40 million Hindu White widows, and the Dalits and Naxalite insurrection that threatens to destroy the heart of midland. While the urban penury competes with rural poverty the plutocratic, dynastic democrats, the extremist rightists, and the megalomaniacs (Nero’s) dream of a global power, the heart of India is in pain and destitution.

Forty percent of “India” is not under the control of the governemnt. How poor is India? Some startling statistics have just been released by a forgotten wing of Dr Singh’s own administration, the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector. Around 80 per cent of India’s working population is in this sector. Nearly 80 per cent of this group earns less than 20 rupees a day and 85 per cent of this sub group is trapped in debt. By that usual sleight of hand we have drawn an arbitrary line to define poverty: Rs 12 a day constitutes the poverty line. This encourages the illusion that 77 per cent of India is now above the poverty line. It isn’t that much above in any case. Nor is this poverty line index-linked to inflation. Twelve rupees a day buys much less today than it did three years ago. The traditional poverty groups remain where they were: 88 per cent of Scheduled Tribes and Castes, 80 per cent of “Other Backward Classes” and 85 per cent of Muslims belong to the “poor and vulnerable” class.

REMOVING MUSHARRAF?The US Administration did not trust President Musharraf anymore. He was considered too independent and was considered conspiring for the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Several attempts were made to assassinate President Musharraf. Many analysts believe that the CIA looked up the right page from the playbook on foreign assassinations. President Karzai with Indian and American backing threatened Pakistan on many occasions with retaliation for the so called “cross-border” activity in Afghanistan. The CIA wanted to eliminate President Musharraf and then get a more amenable leader in office in Islamabad. The theory circulating in some of the most prestigious media sources goes as follows.

While President Musharraf was visiting the USA, the American administration was conspiring to fire him and get a more docile and subservient leader in office in Islamabad. A media campaign was unleashed to discredit President Musharraf. The CIA was been pushing for regime change and considered the sycophantic, obsequies Benazir as the obvious choice. The Red Mosque issue was created with elements of the Baluchistan Liberation Army a relic of the Cold War and Afghan mercenaries.

Tons of money was sent to Pakistan for a well organized campaign to launch street demonstrations against President Musharraf. As in 1979, during the PNA demonstration millions of Dollars were dispersed among professional agitators. Uzbek and Tajiks were recruited to create mayhem in Pakistan.

The CIA planned to send Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan and then assassinate her.  President Karzai the former representative of Conoco would be the point man in Pakistan. Mr. Karzai would visit Pakistan to ensure that all plans were being executed properly.

The media would then be unleashed about the so called “instability” in Pakistan creating a justification for continued and more abrasive offensive action in South Asia. This to create instability in Pakistan that will be used as an excuse to continue the perpetual mimetic warfare in the Muslim world. Pakistan has been facing the brunt of the US initiative to implement “Democracy” in Pakistan even though the credentials of the champions of democracy are very weak. Neither Egypt, nor Uganda, nor Congo, nor Haiti, nor Taiwan, nor China nor Israel nor Russia face the US medias pontification on how great democracy is.

SHORT TERM REPERCUSSIONS: RISE IN ANTI-AMERICANISM

The short term repercussions are that this murder will impact the general election in Pakistan and the USA and creates new political realities. Who will lead the Pakistan Peoples Party? Benazir Bhutto had run the party like her personal fiefdom and drummed out all the founding members of the party who were friends of her father.

Clinton and Republicans John McCain and Rudolph W. Giuliani are seen by Iowa and New Hampshire voters as having the best credentials to deal with national security issues.

In Iowa, Clinton is trying to focus voter attention on the job of the presidency, hoping to heighten that advantage.

The New York senator named her final trip through the state before Thursday’s caucuses “Big Challenges, Real Solutions: Time to Pick a President Tour” — an attempt to shift the discussion away from whether she is likable, the one quality in which she lags behind her chief rivals

“With the assassination of Benazir Bhutto today, the world once again is reminded of the dangers facing those who pursue democracy and free elections in Pakistan and elsewhere in areas that are rife with conflict and violence and extremism and anti-democratic forces at work,” Clinton said. TO ARREST ANTI-AMERICANISM THE USA HAS TO LISTEN TO PAKISTANIS:

The long term repercussions on Pakistani politics are minimal. The PPP will sill be run by the Bhutto family is some ways. Benazir’s children will probably step into the vacuum and begin leading the party.

For all of President Musharraf’s faults, Pakistan is forging ahead with a 7% growth rate and record foreign reserves. Pakistan is the fourth largest state in the world, and a nuclear state advancing at a phenomenal rate of economic growth. She has motorways that can only be the envy of South Asia, and is building bullet trains and huge new cities in Baluchistan and Sindh. Pakistan is attracting huge investments in automobile and technology. Just in the past few weeks Dubai based companies are investing $26 Billion Dollars in two islands. Pakistan’s FTA with China will be a boon to Pakistani and Chinese industrialists who are setting up 6 Chinese industrial zones in Pakistan to build and then export Chinese goods from Pakistani soil. Pakistan will move ahead and is moving ahead.

Pakistan has now become immune to “prophecies of doom”. Pakistanis are sick of “do more” lectures from a 3rd rate country that piggy-backs on superpowers to get a kick out of beating up vulnerable populations.

2 million Muslim kids died destroying the USSR. Today, Pakistan is suffering because of the failed policies of Britain and the USA. The blowback faced by many is because of the short sighted policies of London and Washington.

MEDDLING IN PAKISTANI POLITICS WILL CREATE A BLOWBACK?American meddling in Pakistan could lead to an Iranian type of revolution? Positively not! Islamic parties in Pakistan control less than 10% of the vote block as opposed to a large following in Shia Iran. The PPP and the PML are both mainstream secular parties which have popular support in urban and rural Pakistani politics.

 Musharraf vows to defeat elements conspiring to destabilise Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan 17 (APP): President Pervez Musharraf Thursday blamed internal and external elements for conspiring to destabilise the country but said the nation has the resilience to defeat all such elements. “We can surmount all difficulties, [but] we need to have confidence in ourselves and faith in our abilities and we have to defeat such elements,” President Musharraf said at PTV’s weekly interactive programme ‘Aiwan-e-Sadr sey’ on the “challenges confronting Pakistan and the way forward.”
The President was commenting on the lawlessness following the Dec 27 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto that caused a loss of over Rs 100 billion to the nation.

He said inspite of all this the international rating agencies, including the World Bank, J P Morgan and Merrill Lynch were predicting a 6.5 to 7 per cent growth rate and added that the conspiring elements did not like country’s rapid economic growth and were continuing their machinations against the country.

“I feel very saddened and angry” over the losses suffered by the country, but rejected those who were trying to portray that the country was in a grave danger.

“We are a 160 million strong nation that is a nuclear and missile power, with a strong army and a robust economy,” he said.

Musharraf urged the nation to have faith in its abilities and recalled the difficulties it faced at the time of its inception in 1947 and at later stages.

He said the country’s agriculture, industry and the economy were doing good, while the key indicator, the Stock Exchange, was also around 14,000 points and added that there was no need to worry.

“The nation has the resilience and potential that will revive the spirit witnessed at the time of independence and will take the nation forward,” he said.

President Pervez Musharraf said the country currently faced three major challenges; terrorism and extremism, transition to democracy and need to sustain socio-economic growth.

Musharraf said a few “misguided and lunatics” were attempting to force their way of life on the majority, but vowed that such elements will not succeed.

“There is no place for al-Qaeda in Pakistan … we cannot allow al-Qaeda to operate and commit acts of terrorism here or elsewhere.”

The President said “neither can we allow Taliban’s here or any support to them. No militants can be allowed here.”

President Musharraf underlined the need for adopting a multi-pronged strategy; military, political and socio-economic to bring the country’s tribal areas at par with the rest of the country.

He said there was a need to check growing extremism in the society, continue the ban on militant organisations and use of mosques for such purposes.

President Musharraf strongly rejected reports of any foreign intervention in Pakistan in the garb of operation against the militants.

“This is not possible … till the time Pakistan Army is there,” he added.

He said all security duties inside the country will be undertaken by the Pakistan Army. No one from outside can come into Pakistan,” the President stressed.

Similarly Musharraf rejected reports of any intervention in the country from across the border.

He said if Pakistan needed any help in logistics or intelligence, it can ask for it.

“But no one can forcefully enter Pakistan,” he added.

He also dismissed reports about threats to country’s nuclear program. He said the National Command Authority was looking after the country’s nuclear assets with a Strategic Planning Division fully capable of ensuring the safety of installations.

The President said the nuclear assets have been dispersed and placed under multi-tiered security safeguard.

About reports and demands by some that the US aid to Pakistan be made conditional, the President said so far the country had received US 9.5 billion dollars, of which US 5.5 billion was reimbursement for the services provided and said if no payment is made, no services will be provided.

He said there was a one-time US 1.5 billion dollars debt retirement, while the remaining US 3.5 billion dollars is made up of annual payments of US 600 million dollars spread over five years.

The President said Pakistan was economically strong enough to manage even without the annual US 600 million dollars.

About the second challenge of transition to democracy, the President said “it is my guarantee that there will be a free, fair, transparent and peaceful election on Feb 18 … I can say it with full sincerity.”

He said the bugs, if any, in the electioneering had been removed and added that rangers and the army would be deployed to maintain the law and order, while the Election Commission would conduct the entire process.

“The winners and losers must show grace and should not [act in a manner to] bring bad name to the country.”

About the third challenge of sustaining the economic growth, the President admitted that there were several pressures, but said there was a need for taking measures to meet these.

He said the government was spending huge amount on subsidies on fuel, food and electricity. The President pointed that the government was giving a subsidy of around Rs 140 billion annually on fuel, which was now touching the US 100 dollars a barrel.

About the wheat crisis, he said the country had a surplus of 1.5 million tonnes wheat this year against the 22 million tonnes requirement. Of this, he said, 14 million tonnes was kept by 70 farming community, around 70 per cent of population for their use. Around four million tonnes was purchased by the government, while the rest was acquired by the private sector. He said owing to the high rates in the international market, the private sector smuggled the wheat. He said the National Food Committee has been constituted to ensure that the people get the essential food items at cheap prices across the country.

The President also gave a comparison of latest prices of food items in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, showing that most of these were quite low in Pakistan.

He said wheat in Islamabad was being sold for Rs 17.75, Rs 24 in Dhaka and Rs 22 in New Delhi; Irri rice for Rs 40, Rs 67 and Rs 34; Beef for Rs 120, Rs 150, Rs 78; Mutton for Rs 260, Rs 300 and Rs 251 respectively.

The President when asked about the expected voter turnout in the wake of recent terrorist incidents said it might be lower. He however asked the educated to come forward and make correct decisions for the future of the country.

Musharraf attributed the electricity outages to the rapid industrialisation and said had the country built large dams the present shortage would not have been there. He admitted delay in the plans to generate electricity owing to bureaucratic and procedural delays and said measures were afoot to redress the problem.

He said there has been a major natural gas discovery in NWFP, but said that the growing demand would only be met when the multi million dollar Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project is completed.

The President responded positively to a suggestion of having public-private partnership for provision of security to the industrialists and said it could be further studied.

DISCUSSING TAKING OUT PAKISTANI NUKES IS A DECLARATION OF WAR ON PAKISTAN:-PAKISTANI NUCLEAR WEAPONS ARE SAFE:This is a Neocon Red herring and deeply insulting to Pakistanis of all persuasions.  This discussion is counterproductive to Pakistani-American friendly relations. The speculation the American press is to create perpetual mimetic warfare and plays into the hands of those who are expecting the USA to lead a “Crusade” against all Muslims.

THE “MADE IN THE USA” BENAZIR’S PPP WAS  AN EXPENDIBLE CIA PROP?: After hiring a high powered lobbying firm in Washington, the transformation of the “Daughter of the East” to the “Daughter of the Dollar” was completed this year. Benazir made a lot of enemies in Pakistan by declaring that she would allow access to A.Q. Khan and that she would allow US forces into Pakistan. Her popularity plummeted after these and other similar comments which were construed as unpatriotic by most Pakistanis.

I have to start off with my recent perceptions of her. She was a corrupt politician who was more interested in her political legacy than in the welfare of her nation and people. President Bush said today that Bhutto was someone who fought against terrorism. She did so, conveniently, post 9-11. During the mid 1990s she was openly pro-Taliban as the Pakistani government was one of the few nations in the world that recognized that neo-Khawarij regime.
 

“I am disgusted with the US media. Their coverage of Bhutto as some sort of martyr is despicable and inappropriate. Man, she really did a good job of portraying herself as some sort of beacon of hope for Pakistan. This woman was liable to be arrested at any moment by Interpol because of all the money laundering she and her husband were involved in with 3 to 4 different countries. She was a crook, plain and simple, yet our wonderful press is making her out to be the next Mother Teresa. This is like if Michael Vick was trying to run for Senator of Georgia ten years from now and then he was murdered and all anyone was talking about was how great a football player he was without any mention of his dog fighting crimes. This is so Orwellian”

It is doubtful that the army or the agencies were involved because they could have controlled her actions even if she became Prime Minister. Her assassination was probably the work of CIA to destabilize Pakistan and create ethnic and religious dissention.

THE SOLUTION TO THE STABILITY OF PAKISTAN: The answer is a massive Marshall Plan for Pakistan. Expeditious implementation of Reconstruction Opporutnity Zones (ROZ) and signing of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Pakistan. Expemtion of Pakistani goods from duties, and elimination of subsidy on American cotton growers. Trade and Aid.

WAS THE BENAZIR ASSASSINATION UNAVOIDABLE ? In the face of Al-Qaida threats to Benazir and Musharraf, President Musharraf had banned open rallies. However, Benazir Bhutto swore to break that ban and insisted on holding open rallies, with her own security. 

WHO KILLED BHUTTO? Al-Qaida brags about the assassination.

The mere suggestion that the “CIA” (includes all agencies) “knows” realties on the ground in Pakistan is laughable. The Pakistanis are not stupid. They are fully aware of American plans. The Hindukush mountains, the Himalyas, the inhospitable deserts, and the plains offer huge sites for hiding small missiles and the large terrain and cannot be bombed out of existence.

Do we have similar plans for Britain, France and Israel or is this nonsense reserved for the “little brown boys” of Pakistan. This entire train of thought is racist and bigoted.

Pakistan developed a nuclear program as a result of the 1971 debacle (half the country was lost) when the USA failed to help Pakistan despite membership of CENTO and SEATO and two executive defense agreements. Pakistanis pledged “never again” and wanted to defend their freedom and their land.

Pakistanis helped the USA in her war with the USSR. Pakistan was sanctioned as a reward for the defeat of the USSR in Afghanistan and it’s ultimate implosion.

Ingrates in the administration should appreciate Pakistan and Pakistani measures to support the USA.

From SEATO, CENTO to the destruction of the USSR, Pakistan has been an ally. This is no way to treat an ally. Pakistan has more than 30,000 scientists working in the nuclear field. Entire universities are devoted to materials and nuclear research. To think that all depends on the much maligned Mr. Khan is stupid and silly. Mr. Khan is a hero is Pakistan and Pakistanis developed the bomb when Pakistan was under sanctions (by its allies of the cold war). The program at the time was clandestine, and no one is sorry that a nuclear program was developed.

Historical records are full of “CIA” incompetence.

1) The “CIA” failed to see the implosion of the USSR.

2) The “CIA” funded Castro and failed to see the rise of Fidel as in anti-American.

3) Most recently the “CIA” failed to forsee Pakistan’s nuclear explosions

4) The “CIA” failed to see the realities of Iraq and Afghanistan.

5) The “CIA” has no clue about OBL and was unable to nab him

To think that the “CIA” knows about Pakistani war heads is as silly as knowing that the CIA knew about Iraqi WMDs.

Pakistan has 160 million people who are proud and can defend the country. President Ayub Khan said it best when he said in his book “Friends Not Master”.

The way to help Pakistan is to create a Marshall Plan for Pakistan.

The only way to secure Pakistani nukes is to eliminate bias, contempt and mistrust of the Pakistanis. For the past 60 years, Pakistan is the most mis-treated friend of the USA. It is un-American to treat Pakistan this way.

A Faustian deal ends in tragedy.

According to the American media sources a tragedy of epic proportions and Greek dimensions has taken place in Pakistan. The fate of Benazir Bhutto reminds us about a Greek royalty. Princess Cassandra, the first daughter of Troy, the sister of mighty Hector and the noble Paris was beautiful, wealthy, happy- and perhaps all these led to her downfall.

In the Greek tragedy Apollo fell in love with Cassandra, and he gave her the gift of foresight. Cassandra rejected the advances of Apollo so he changed the dimension of his gift to her. Apollo decided to make it so that although she knew the future, no one would ever believe her. After that no one believed her.

Unlike Princess Cassandra Benazir could not see the future. Worst she could not prevent it. Like Princess Cassandra she could not convince Pakistanis of her sincerity.  Benazir Bhutto rejected good advice, chose the wrong suiters and could not consummate her marriage with the Pakistan army or the people of Pakistan. Her unpopularity with the Pakistani people may have encouraged the militants and Baitullah Masud to kill Benazir Bhutto.

For the first time in more than half a century Pakistan does not have to face a Bhutto in politics. This hasn’t happened since 1979 when Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged by the American installed Zia ul Haq.

Pakistanis know Benazir Bhutto intimately. They elected her twice. Most Americans don’t know this but Pakistanis also fired her twice. She was indicted and convicted in Pakistani and Swiss courts. Pakistanis have been taken aback by the adolation love fest for Ms. Bhutto. Despite the eulogies in the Western media and US sponsored Geo TV (affiliate of CNN) Pakistanis were not too fond of the Bhuttos. She is not very popular in Pakistan and with new revelations about her agenda coming out, people recovering from the shock may resent her even more. Many Pakistanis are befuddled at the gala of eulogy on all American channels about an indicted and convicted politician who was rejected by the Pakistani electorate.

Many Pakistanis are disgusted by ill gotten wealth, her princely lifestyle (Surray Palace), and the corruption of her husband Mr. Asif Zardari. Most remember her indictment and conviction in foreign courts and many disliked the fact that she rode on the coattails of American officials.

FAUSTIAN DEAL LED TO TRAGEDY: Many Pakistanis were of the opinion that like Faust, Benazir had bartered her soul to America for power. After the deal, this tragedy ended in the way all tragedies do: In tears and annihilation of everyone involved. Most Pakistanis hated Benazir’s “Made in America” talking points  and almost all Pakistanis disliked her comments about A.Q. Khan and allowing US Marines into Pakistani territory. This Faustian deal was confirmed on the Wolf Blister interview with a journalist of the “Parade Magazine” on December 28^th, 2007. The transcript will show that Benazir Bhutto had promised America “boots on the ground” to halt the “new Ho Chi Minh trail” and give the “control of Pakistan’s Nuclear weapons” to NATO troops.

LIMITS OF THE SUPER POWER:The events of this week once again show the limits of a superpower. Can America continue to impose leaders on countries like it used to in the 50s and 60s? All this in the name of “democracy” or some other invented slogan. The “democracy” slogan was invented during WW2 to fight Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan.

2008 is a new year for Pakistan. Senator Biden is one of the few American politicians who gets it. Zbig Brizinski is another one who knows how to deal with the Pakistanis. Biden says that the “transactional” relationship between the US and America has to be transformed into a normal relationship. Pakistanis cannot be used as an outsourced machine to do America’s bidding. A strategy has to be developed to combat the enemies of America. War is not the answer.

The American Tin ear has to be melted. The Trust deficit has to be bridged.

Pakistanis will elect hundreds of members of the National Assembly and the Senate. Out of these one will be elected a Prime Minister. The Americans had hoped that this was Benazir Bhutto. There was a distinct dislike for Mr. Nawaz Sharif. This is not to be.

The incongruity of a submissive sychophantic press as depcited in “1984″ and “Brazil” was dismissed as an oxymoronic scifi-fantasy. Amazingly the visionary surrealist H.G. Wells got it right. Wells had predicted an obsequiously subservient press that was under the thumb of a Central Government something like Pravda and Izvestia, vintage USSR. Unfortunately today our press routinely regurgitates “Big Brother’s” “(his) masters voice”.

The desperate “hissy fits” heard on CNN and Fox about the “future of Pakistan” are just that temper tantrums because the superpower could not have her way in Pakistan. Pakistanis are flabbergasted by the coverage of Benazir Bhutto in the international media. They are leery of discussions about Pakistan’s Nuclear weapons and this has created deep mistrust in Pakistan about American intentions.

The rehashed prolix putrid twaddle from the media fails to illuminate the confusing deluge of eerily inept and counter-intuitive claptrap masquerading as fact in the clumsily stage-managed “global war on terror“.

Perhaps for once America can trust real democracy and trust the Pakistanis to elect a leader that they like. The PPP will probably inherit a lot of sympathy vote, but the Pakistanis will elect secular mainstream members of parliament as they always have. The religious parties will garnish less than 10% of the vote.

More than 1000 Pakistanis troops have died fighting the Taliban and Al-Qaida. Pakistanis are not comfortable fighting their own countrymen. New peace deals will be made with these people.

The nay sayers and doomsday elements will once again be proven wrong. America will have to deal with the Pakistani trioka, and the Pakistan Army and President Musharraf. The discussion in the press is as if Pakistan is a colony of the US and the US appointed Viceroy is not doing his job. All this reminds Pakistanis of “The Ugly American” and this creates problems for pro-American Pakistanis who want to develop strong relations with America.

The Press’s febrile invective is a compendium of discredited Neocon assertions, unsubstantiated discomfiting claptrap, outright anachronistic distortion, vapid insipid fatuous doltish dalliance and pure unadulterated balderdash. The repellent manic-obsession and paranoid conspiratorial delusions about Pakistanis are a transparent attempt to justify thier irredentist and revanchist agenda. 

A PPP or PML leader will be elected Prime Minister and life will go on in South Asia. Ultimately the US troops will leave Afghanistan and the country will again become a province of Pakistan.

There are many in America, Europe and the Islamic world that continue to debate whether “Law of ‘man’ “, supercedes “Law of God”. Many in the Evangelical Red States do not agree in allowing abortion since it violates “Law of God”. Many evangelicals want America to be a “Christian state” and may succeed in doing this if present Red colorization of states continue. We saw this happen in India where a communal party was able to rise to power from 2 seats in parliament to 240 seats and eventually form a “Hindu” government. The same happened in Hitler’s Germany and Italy. Voting spawned dictators with devastating consequences for millions of people.

I have tremendous respect for the constitution of my sweet land of liberty. Our constitution has some very strong points. The bicameral legislature patterned on the “Indian confederation” balanced the rights of the individual states vs. federalism and has been emulated around the world.

The government evolved to allow the Supreme Court as an equal and third wheel of government, even though this was never the intent of the original framers of the constitution. Our glorious Constitution was based on the Magna Carta. The most important part of our constitution is chapter 39 taken from the Magna Carta.

“Nullus liber homo capiatur vel imprisonetur aut disseisietur de libero tenemento suo, vel libertatibus, vel liberis consuetudinibus suis, aut utlagetur, aut exuletur, aut aliquo modo destruatur, nec super eum ibimus, nec super eum mittemus, nisi per legale judicium parium suorum, vel per legem terr.”

In English this shows up as “No freeman shall be taken, or imprisoned, or be disseised of his freehold, or liberties, or free customs, or be outlawed, or exiled, or any otherwise destroyed; nor will we not pass upon him, nor condemn him, but by lawful judgment of his peers, or by the law of the land.“

Contrary to popular belief, the original was not even written in English. It was translated into Latin from the original Arabic. “Trial by jury” was of course an Arab invention popular in Al-Andulusia (Spain).  The Magna Carta was taken from the much despised and misunderstood Shariah Law. See John Maksidi’s research consecrated and published in the North Carolina Law journal (copy can be retrieved or mailed to you).  The Bill of Rights were taken from Ibn Tufail, Ibn Haitam and canonized (“canon’ is from the Arabic word “qanoon”) by Hamilton and Jefferson as the Bill of Rights.

I disagree with the disneyland version of history that states that “the founding fathers set up a constitutional system in which the power of the state flowed from and is dependent on the power of the people”. These particular ideas may work well as candy for 8th grade (his)tory books but it is a bit far removed from reality. For a dose of reality, we need to know that the word “democracy” does not appear in the constitution of the United States.

As historians Charles Austin Beard and Mary Ritter Beard wrote (1939): “At no time, at no place, in solemn convention assembled, through no chosen agents, had the American people officially proclaimed the United States to be a democracy. The Constitution did not contain the word or any word lending countenance to it, except possibly the mention of ‘We the people,’ in the preamble … When the Constitution was framed, no respectable person called himself a democrat.“

The USA was created as “republic” not a “democracy”. The word democracy was coined in the late 40s to “manufacture consent” for the war against “fascism” and “Nazism” to spread “democracy” and freedom in Europe.

James Madison’s Federalist Paper #10 discusses the issue of Democracies. In it he states: “Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives, as they have been violent in their deaths. Theoretic politicians, who have patronized this species of Government, have erroneously supposed, that by reducing mankind to a perfect equality in their political rights, they would, at the same time, be perfectly equalized and assimilated in their possessions, their opinions and their passions.” We can see from this that Mr. Madison would never have advocated a pure Democracy for his new nation. http://www.wealth4freedom.com/truth/13/DEMvsREPUB.htm

About 370 BC, Plato wrote: “A democracy is a state in which the poor, gaining the upper hand, kill some and banish others, and then divide the offices among the remaining citizens equally.”

Alexander Hamilton, in debate, said: “Real liberty is neither found in despotism or the extremes of democracy, but in moderate government.”

“Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the” Ayn Rand

There are serious flaws in the US constitution, which allows a majority to completely over-rule the rights of minorities or allows a minority opinion to be imposed on the majority if the vote is split. For example, if there are 3 candidates in an election and two get 30% of the vote and the third gets 40% of the vote. Now the person with 40% of the votes gets elected, even though 60% of the people opposed his election. This taken care of on the French and German constitutions by having run-offs.

How about a few quotations demonstrating the disdain our founders held for democracy?
James Madison, Federalist Paper No. 10: In a pure democracy, “there is nothing to check the inducement to sacrifice the weaker party or the obnoxious individual.”

At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Edmund Randolph said, ” … that in tracing these evils to their origin every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy.”
John Adams said, “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There was never a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”
? Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.“

In a word or two, the founders knew that a democracy would lead to the same kind of tyranny the colonies suffered under King George III

Not to digress to far, but this is very similar of “manufacturing consent” to spread “democracy” in the Middle East, where we support a minority non-pashtun government in Afghanistan and are now in the process of replacing a secular government with a pro-Iranian ayatollah led theocracy in Iraq. In fact all the founding father, Jefferson, Hamilton repeatedly spoke up AGAINST “democracy” as a system of government for the USA.

The American system of government however imperfect that strives to allow people to control the government may work well in literate societies. Our glorious experiment in democracy is surely a beacon to the world and yes it is based on the Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions.

Benazir’s anachronistic 5 Es (employment, education, energy, environment, equality) are nothing new, and are enshrined in the “Qarardad-e-Maqasid“, and the glorious Pakistan constitution. Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto would be turning in his grave, the grave in Naodero which is in “a state of disrepair — its marble floors chipped and its peeling walls spray-painted with anti-Benazir graffiti“, according to a report in Time magazine. The tomb’s custodian, Muhammad Issa, told the Time reporter, “We will whitewash the walls before she returns.”.

Pakistani intellectuals who are assiduously watching the atrophying of the legislative and judicial branches are more troubled by the credulousness of those “Sachi and Sachi” packaged slogans than the vacuity of Benzir’s ideas.  Ms. Benazir Bhutto recently has updated her juvenile book “Daughter of the East“.One would have expected her to quote from cynosure of Pakistan Alama IQbal’s “The Reconstruction of Muslim thought“–instead she reads from the Neocon playbook. 

Now you are talking about handing over Mr. Khan and renting out Pakistani sovereignty. Pakistanis will anathematize this nonsense. Where did you learn this subservience and obsequies kowtowing? Before the cowering cowards think about turning over more Pakistani secrets to “them” –read your father’s book.

It is pedagogical to note that the Pakistan Peoples Party of Zulifiqar Ali Bhutto understood International Relations and Political Science. Amazingly your eviscerated, desiccated and discombobulated Peoples party has no place for stalwarts like Aitizaz Ahsan, Mubbashir Hasan or any other Bhutto.

Aunt Benazir’s false promises
Bhutto’s return bodes poorly for Pakistan — and for democracy there.

KARACHI — We Pakistanis live in uncertain times. Emergency rule has been imposed for the 13th time in our short 60-year history. Thousands of lawyers have been arrested, some charged with sedition and treason; the chief justice has been deposed; and a draconian media law — shutting down all private news channels — has been drafted.

Perhaps the most bizarre part of this circus has been the hijacking of the democratic cause by my aunt, the twice-disgraced former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto. While she was hashing out a deal to share power with Gen. Pervez Musharraf last month, she repeatedly insisted that without her, democracy in Pakistan would be a lost cause. Now that the situation has changed, she’s saying that she wants Musharraf to step down and that she’d like to make a deal with his opponents — but still, she says, she’s the savior of democracy.

The reality, however, is that there is no one better placed to benefit from emergency rule than she is. Along with the leaders of prominent Islamic parties, she has been spared the violent retributions of emergency law. Yes, she now appears to be facing seven days of house arrest, but what does that really mean? While she was supposedly under house arrest at her Islamabad residence last week, 50 or so of her party members were comfortably allowed to join her. She addressed the media twice from her garden, protected by police given to her by the state, and was not reprimanded for holding a news conference. (By contrast, the very suggestion that they might hold a news conference has placed hundreds of other political activists under real arrest, in real jails.)

Ms. Bhutto’s political posturing is sheer pantomime. Her negotiations with the military and her unseemly willingness until just a few days ago to take part in Musharraf’s regime have signaled once and for all to the growing legions of fundamentalists across South Asia that democracy is just a guise for dictatorship.

It is widely believed that Ms. Bhutto lost both her governments on grounds of massive corruption. She and her husband, a man who came to be known in Pakistan as “Mr. 10%,” have been accused of stealing more than $1 billion from Pakistan’s treasury. She is appealing a money-laundering conviction by the Swiss courts involving about $11 million. Corruption cases in Britain and Spain are ongoing.

It was particularly unappealing of Ms. Bhutto to ask Musharraf to bypass the courts and drop the many corruption cases that still face her in Pakistan. He agreed, creating the odiously titled National Reconciliation Ordinance in order to do so. Her collaboration with him was so unsubtle that people on the streets are now calling her party, the Pakistan People’s Party, the Pervez People’s Party. Now she might like to distance herself, but it’s too late.

Why did Ms. Bhutto and her party cronies demand that her corruption cases be dropped, but not demand that the cases of activists jailed during the brutal regime of dictator Zia ul-Haq (from 1977 to 1988) not be quashed? What about the sanctity of the law? When her brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto — my father — returned to Pakistan in 1993, he faced 99 cases against him that had been brought by Zia’s military government. The cases all carried the death penalty. Yet even though his sister was serving as prime minister, he did not ask her to drop the cases. He returned, was arrested at the airport and spent the remaining years of his life clearing his name, legally and with confidence, in the courts of Pakistan.

Ms. Bhutto’s repeated promises to end fundamentalism and terrorism in Pakistan strain credulity because, after all, the Taliban government that ran Afghanistan was recognized by Pakistan under her last government — making Pakistan one of only three governments in the world to do so.

And I am suspicious of her talk of ensuring peace. My father was a member of Parliament and a vocal critic of his sister’s politics. He was killed outside our home in 1996 in a carefully planned police assassination while she was prime minister. There were 70 to 100 policemen at the scene, all the streetlights had been shut off and the roads were cordoned off. Six men were killed with my father. They were shot at point-blank range, suffered multiple bullet wounds and were left to bleed on the streets.

My father was Benazir’s younger brother. To this day, her role in his assassination has never been adequately answered, although the tribunal convened after his death under the leadership of three respected judges concluded that it could not have taken place without approval from a “much higher” political authority.

I have personal reasons to fear the danger that Ms. Bhutto’s presence in Pakistan brings, but I am not alone. The Islamists are waiting at the gate. They have been waiting for confirmation that the reforms for which the Pakistani people have been struggling have been a farce, propped up by the White House. Since Musharraf seized power in 1999, there has been an earnest grass-roots movement for democratic reform. The last thing we need is to be tied to a neocon agenda through a puppet “democrat” like Ms. Bhutto.

By supporting Ms. Bhutto, who talks of democracy while asking to be brought to power by a military dictator, the only thing that will be accomplished is the death of the nascent secular democratic movement in my country. Democratization will forever be de-legitimized, and our progress in enacting true reforms will be quashed. We Pakistanis are certain of this.
