In news that would delight the BJP and the RSS, Mohandas Gandhi cannot be referred to as the Father of the Nation.
According to the Indian Home Ministry, Mohandas Gandhi cannot be accorded the ‘Father of the Nation‘ title by government as the Constitution does not permit any titles except educational and military ones.
Driven by a patriot zeal, Class VI student Aishwarya had filed a number of petitions seeking details about Gandhi and the reason for not referring to the slain leader as the Father of the Nation. In response, she was told that no such title has been accorded to Gandhi.
Godse, a fanatic Hindu killed Gandhi while he was pleading for his life.
Responding to Lucknow-based student Aishwarya Parashar, the Indian Home Ministry has informed her that no action was taken on her plea to the President to declare Mohandas Gandhi as ‘Father of the Nation’ because Article 18 (1) of the Constitution does not permit any titles except education and military ones.
