ISLAMABAD: A lawyer for Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani has said that the inclusion of the envoy’s name in the list of NRO beneficiaries as presented in the Supreme Court was an action of malafide intent by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Advocate Sohail Hasan Qaiser said that Haqqani has already approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the inclusion of his name in the NRO beneficiary list and the petition is awaiting hearing, says a press release.
‘We have challenged the inclusion of Husain Haqqani’s name on the basis that this was a fabricated case in which his name was added in 1999 that stayed under investigation for more than 11 years since registration of its FIR in year 1997 and investigation agencies persistently failed to even file a reference under NAB,’ he said.
He said his client neither sought relief under NRO nor was informed that NAB was closing investigation in the case. ‘Including an abandoned case in the list of cases terminated as a result of NRO reflects malafide and nothing else,’ he observed.
The lawyer said that NAB had further shown its malafide intent by claiming that there was a financial aspect to the case in question.
In the original case, he said, Hussain Haqqani was not accused of any financial impropriety or of causing any loss to the exchequer.—APP
