The Pakistani Nation today celebrates Iqbal’s 131st birth anniversary. Here is a primer on how the Pakjistani nation got here.

ISLAMABAD: The nation celebrated Allama Muhammmad Iqbal’s 131st birth anniversary and paid tribute to the national poet and philosopher.

Social, cultural, educational and literary organisations held various programmes and activities to mark the day.

The print media published supplements on Allama Iqbal and the electronic media broadcast various programmes to highlight the poet’s work. Sialkot Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema and District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Ata Muhammad visited Iqbal Manzil (Iqbal’s birthplace) to pay homage to the poet-philosopher who envisioned a separate homeland for Muslims of the Sub-continent.

Philosophies: President Asif Ali Zardari urged the need for imbibing Iqbal’s teachings and manifesting his philosophies to steer the nation out of the present crises.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said, “Today, more than ever, there is a need for us and the people of the West to learn from the teachings of Iqbal who advocated the foundation of a new world by wedding intellect with love.”

Humanity: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan said, “Iqbal’s thoughts are not only for Muslims but also for the entire humanity as he gave the message of love and peace.”

National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza said the poetry and thoughts of Iqbal awoke Muslims from their slumber and injected a spirit of independence and freedom in them.

Allama Iqbal was born on November 9, 1877 in Sialkot and died on April 21, 1938. His poetry in Urdu, Arabic and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era and his vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India inspired Pakistan’s creation.

Iqbal was a strong proponent of the political and spiritual revival of Islamic civilisation across the world, but specifically in India. He delivered a series of famous lectures to this effect, which were published as The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. app
