FATA and Waziristan

Holbrooke unsuccessfully pressed Pakistan for action in Wazirisitan

Richard Holbrooke was told by General Kiyani that the Paksitan Army would go to Waziristan “manyana” (literally means “tomorrow” but actually means never in Spanish). Trying to capitalize on the elimination of Bait Mehsud in Waziristan, he found no encouraging words in any quarter in Pakistan. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Liaqat Baloch asked to stop Bharati interference in Baluchsitan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s Fazlur Rehman told him to solve Kashmir if he wanted any help in Afghanistan. . Mr. Nawaz Sharif told him that the US should sign an FTA with Pakistan and Prime Minister Gilani gave him a shopping list of US arms–from night vision systems, to drones, to helicopters. He wa amenable to sending the arms to help the army fight the TTP in Swat, but ran into Bharati objections.

There are confusing reports coming out the different factions of the TTP. Some factions proclaimed Faqr Muhmaad as the leader of the TTP. Ohter factions have proclaimed that Hakimullah is the new leader. However most intelligence officials maintain that the real Hakimullah is dead and the TTP is using a “dead man’s name” to buy time so that it can let a new leader of the TTP emerge–possibly a brother of Hakimullah.
