Delhi elections: Another missed opportunity to build bridges of harmony within Bharat (aka India) and without. Here is a quote from an Indian author about the Bharati elections. Arvind Adiga calls the “banter about local elctions like eunuchs discussing the Kama Sutra”. The New Yorker encapsulates the synopsis of the Diaga’s seminal book in the following paragraph.

Bharat had an opportunity to shatter the old paradigms and build a better South Asia. But it was not to be. The new-generation, U.S.-modeled “journalism,” its projection of Rahul as the next Indian leader (eerily reminding us of the rise of a totally apolitical Rajiv), and complete suppression of issues did it in for Congress. Commentators who have no grassroots experience with Indian politics cheer all across the globe. They now also have big media’s blessings in the West.

But the fact of the matter is, India and her 80 percent unfortunate will remain poor; terrorism, pollution, overpopulation, health crises, environmental destruction and massive corruption will thrive, and the rich will be richer. Female infanticide and dowry deaths will go on. “Untouchables” and other minorities will be denied of basic human rights. If this election were of substantive issues — issues which big-name journalists deliberately suppressed — we’d talk about the failure of the Manmohan Singh government to protect Indians from terrorism and war — we’d expect at least that discussion held having the Kashmir and Mumbai memories been so fresh. But it didn’t happen. Nobody talked about the thousands of farmers committed suicide in India in recent years; surely, Guiness Book would not include that as a world record!Countercurrents.

Life will not change for the incarcerated Kashmiris, the Naxalites who control 40% of the territory, the 150 million Muslims, or the 450 milion Dalits. More than 75% of Indians earn less than $2 per day. So much for the Superpower…more a Slumdog third world dump.

Many analysts don’t want to call Bharat (aka India) a “democracy”. They call it a Psephocracy– a system which simply sanctions an elites right to maintain the status quo. The voters had an opportunity to make a difference by electing the third front–but they didn’t, because they couldn’t vote for a Dalit woman in alliance with Muslims and the downtrodden who identify themselves as communists, Maoists, and Naxalites.  “Chamari hoon, kunwari hoon, tumhari hoon”. Their propagandistic deception begins with the simple use of the word democracy. ..country qualifies as a constitutional republic, let alone a true democracy. Rife with election fraud, Corporatism, gross wealth disparities, militarism, belligerent expansionism, toxic nationalism, anda laundry list of traits characterizing a fascist state, the United States could easily qualify as one of democracy’s greatest foes. India does not lag far behind.

Hype and spin aside, determined investigation and fastidious scholarship by people like Bangladeshi barrister M.B.I. India and the United States do share a number of commonalities, but few of them relate to “democracy”, “liberty”, or “solid moral foundations”.

While it is true that both nations were founded by noble people who wrested themselves free of the yoke of Great Britain’s imperial oppression, like degenerate trust fund children, the heirs of liberty have defecated on their family’s reputation and squandered their fortune.

As Munshi’s exhaustive research demonstrates, India’s policies, attitudes, and actions toward its neighbors are quite analogous to the machinations of the United States throughout Central and South America. Psephocracy is a form of government decided by “elections”. Orientalists will tell us all that the Greeks supposedly invented the ballot box when they voted with the psephos or ‘pebble’ in ceramic urns. Psephologyis the study of elections and voting, and a psephologist is an electoral scientist or analyst. In a psephocracy, the media is focused on inconsequential events and issues while the pullulating millions are unable even to see the affluence of those who manipulate the electorate through fear mongering and other tested mechanisms.

Additionally, we don’t need BJP or the left anymore — Congress will keep playing the roles fanatics and fundamentalists play: fake Hindutva in the Cow Belt and fake socialism in Bengal and Kerala (and fake isolationism in isolated places nobody cares about). Note that countless Congress candidates ceremonially went to Hindu temples to receive blessings to win their seats. Many received special sermons from astrologers and priests. With this, who needs the conservatives?

Was Congress ever a secular party when it comes to religion or caste? Do some research on how it used Muslim League in Kerala, Dalits in Karnataka, Orissa and Andhra, the so-called untouchables in Madhya Pradesh, U.P. and Bihar, and played the Christian card in Northeastern provinces, for decades, to sustain power (and to trash the allies later on). Congress party “leaders” first showed how to use black money in Indian politics, and how to buy dissidents from rival groups. Youth Congress came into being by its rampant hooliganism in the seventies, with blessings from Sanjay Gandhi. Has it really changed? Countercurrents.

Illusionary Democracy depends on Psephocracy as a way to legitimize the dictatorship of dynastic plutocracy–as practiced in the Brahamin corridors of power in India. What happens after elections in a Psephocracy? Nothing. Elections simply endorse the will of the plutocrats who perpetually remain in power.

The movie Slumdog Millionaire and the Booker Prize winning novel White Tiger have highlighted the non-shiny part of India. Far from exploiting poverty, these are stories about India which demand a global response – especially for the sake of the children.

This is the India of 80% of the population—the India of the slums, the outcastes, the exploited, and of abject poverty. The India where Dalit, tribal, and poor children are sold into the sex trade. Where fully healthy children are maimed into becoming beggars. Where children become victims of religious communalism. And where the elitist classes keep them out of prosperity and development by not being willing to change a system that disenfranchises the children of the downtrodden.

I have worked with the disenfranchised and marginalised for most of my life. I’m a citizen of India who is proud of my country’s progress in recent years, yet I must point out the obvious again. The movie is not about selling the poverty of India as a British newspaper alleged (“Shocked by Slumdog’s poverty porn”, Alice Miles, The Times, Jan. 14, 2009). Instead, it is the story about the real India of the majority where children become the primary victims of all that is dysfunctional in society (as The Guardian pointed out).

As the movie is released in India this week, expect another barrage of attacks by a section of the elitist Indian media. Likely there will be heavy emphasis on the simple fact that this is a movie made by a white Brit! All this while forgetting that this movie—which was won Golden Globes and other awards and was nominated for several Oscars—is far truer to Indian reality than the popular fantasized Bollywood movies.

But isn’t this the time for truth-telling about what ails India and our world?

Are not the children of our day the primary victims of caste and racial discrimination, human trafficking, war, poverty, and religious extremism?

The world has about 1.2 billion children—with India and China accounting for more than a fourth—400 million children. The vast majority of India’s roughly 250 million children are affected by dire poverty, caste discrimination, and exploitation.

Millions of children living in Africa, Latin America, and the Muslim world suffer the same plight. Many of these are in similarly desperate situations. Is it crystal clear to you like it is to me? The slumdog of our generation is the boy or girl less than 14 years old.

I have a sobering, reoccurring thought these days. Is the main sin of our generation what we are doing to children—both born and unborn? Add that old reliable, Kashmir, throw in the North East, and recall the report that some 150 of the newly elected MP’s have some criminal connection and you can see why Indians have before them a full plate, of problems if not food. It consists of innumerable collection of castes, which are exclusive in their life and have no common experience to share and have no bond of sympathy. The existence of caste system is a standing denial of the existence of those ideals of society and therefore of democracy. An Indian cannot eat or marry with an Indian simply because he or she does not belong to his or her caste. An Indian simply can not touch an Indian because he or she does belong to his or her caste.” Ambedkar

India hasn’t changed for hundreds of years, and can never change. The Brahmins of the Indian National Congress have pretty much ruled in since 1947 with the right amount of tokenism for one minority or the other. 

Sudra Holocaust: Genocide of 1 million Dalits in India since 1947: About three million Dalit women have been raped and around one million Dalits killed from the time of Independence. This is 25 times more than number of soldiers killed during the wars fought after independence. Ambedkar, an Untouchable from the caste of Mahars, attends the University of Columbia, where he is sent on a scholarship from the Maharaja of Baroda, Sayajirao Gaekwad III. He is taught there by John Dewey, and absorbs his philosophy of Pragmatism. Armed with a PhD he earns in 1927, Ambedkar returns home with an American’s clarity. He wears modern dress, unlike Gandhi and Nehru, and is detached from the cloying attachment they, especially Gandhi, have to India’s culture.

Because he is not sentimental, and really an intellectual outsider, he does not engage with the culture but resists it and that is why he has no power. He writes a series of masterly treatises on the nature of India. In the early 40s, he predicts, perfectly, the trajectory of Jinnah’s movement, and that of Pakistan’s future, in his book The Partition of India.

In 1931, at the age of 40, he goes up against Gandhi at the Second Round Table Conference in London, where Allama Iqbal and Jinnah are also present. After the conference fails, Ramsay McDonald drafts the Communal Award, and gives the Untouchables a separate electorate, just like the Muslims. Under this, Muslims vote only for Muslims.

Gandhi rejects this and goes on a fast. Muslims will always remain Muslims, he reasons, separate from Hindus: will Untouchables remain Untouchable till the end of time? Or will they integrate into a casteless society? The old man is adamant and in very poor health, now in Poona jail. Under pressure, Ambedkar surrenders and agrees to a joint electorate.

…But his surrender is seen as the deliberate humiliation of Ambedkar by Gandhi to the young Dalits of independent India, including Mayawati. She despises Gandhi, who is a bania by caste. Bribable Delhi did not allow another conscienceless politician to come to power to shatter the flagitious shackles of the stratified society infested by caste, communalism and corruption. There was some indication that the land of tokenism may elect an Untouchable Dalit as an offering to the Dalits who have lived a life of servitude andslavery under Brahmanism for several thousand years. It affirmed: The revolution will be carried out and completed through armed agrarian revolutionary war; that is, protracted people’s war with the armed seizure of power remaining as its central and principal task, encircling the cities from the countryside and thereby finally capturing them.” 

But it in the endit was not to be. In 2008 the left lost. The grand alliance between the Dalits, the Muslims, and the Communists failed–just like it failed in the 1940. Then they couldn’t unite. Now they united but were stabbed in the back by some in the opposition who supported the government. The vote of no confidence failed because the Congress spent millions of Dollars in bribes and even allowed convicted members of Parliament who were in jail to come in a vote for Premier Singh’s government. Something similar happened again this year.

The Congress always represented the upper caste intrests and they used the Bahujan votes to come to power. In a democracy numbers means power. The BJP or the Brahmin Jati Party of Hindu terrorists fractured the Congress mandate by weaning away the upper caste votes from Congress. The BJP used the Ram Janma Bhoomi movement to rope in the Backward Castes. But that movement has died down as the Backward castes have realised that BJP is only intrested in their own Jati and they do not care for the Sudras. And about Dalits they do not even treat them as Humans. The only support BJP has now is from the 15% upper caste dwija vote bank. Even this 15% is fractured to a great extent. The Congress with thier pro upper caste policies have aliented the Bahujans. That is why there are so many regional parties like DMK, PMK,JD(S) and the leftists. All these people have literally killed the congress votebank. The Hindus are trembling and pissing in their pants. But you cannot prevent the forces of History. There were many visionaries in the Subcontinent who saw he dangers of majoritarianism. A few had the foresight who actually came up with plans to resolve the rights of the minorities in the Subcontinent. His Cabinet Mission Plan was a stroke of genious and would have bridged the gap between Hindu and Muslim, Sikh and Dalit. It was torpedoed by the right wing of the Indian National Congress which shunned not only Jinnah but also Ambedkar and Bose. Thus began the politics of race, religion and creed.

Dr Ambedkar when pressed for separate electorate for the depressed classes, feared that in the Parliamentary form of government, the voices of dissent would always be decried. It is a majority vote but majority can not always be right. Secondly, he feared that those who will represent the oppressed community might not be the ‘well-wishers’ of the community as they will be more bothered about getting votes of other communities, particularly if they are fighting from so called reserve constituencies, their worry would be more on focusing on other communities rather than their own. This will only create a leadership which would be corrupt and could easily be co-opted.
