COMACs "C919": Chinese Jumbo Jet heralds The Chinese Aviation Century

The Chinese have moved from light and heavy manufacturing to cutting edge military aircraft to the aviation industry. Chinese first produces small aircraft, but since 2007 it has now set its sights on the Jumbo Jets, the largest civil aviation aircraft in the industry.

Within a few years, the Chinese will conquer the summit of technological prowess–something that eludes even the Japanese. Once the Jumbo is built and flying, Red China of Mao Ze Dung will be able to transport the worlds passengers one one airport to the other without fear of embargoes or diktats from either the US or Europe. 2018 heralds the Chinese Aviation Century.

It is called the Manufacturing PacManstrategy. Start with parts, and an export engine. Then begin duplicating large machines like the Migs. Reach technological independence and build your own aircraft. China has followed the path perfectly.

Chinese Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (CACC) was founded on May the 11th2008 with an opening ceremony in presence of Boeing and Airbus representatives. It has an initial capital of $2.7 billion, one third of which invested by state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission that is the biggest stakeholder of the firm.

Like all other Chinese ventures, this one begins wth duplicating as much of Western technology as possible and then slowly moving up the food chain to the top of the line products. The indigenous Jumbo jet will first ues foreign engines, and then begin using domestically produced engines that promise to more powerful than Boeing’s engines.

(WAPA) – Even if intellectual property, design and assembly of the jumbo-jet project will belong exclusively to China, Chinese Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China general manager, Wu Guangli, stated yesterday (Thursday, March 5th) that parts and materials will be collected worldwide. He invited all the suppliers to cooperate with Chinese enterprises participating in the project. China will keep supervision and control, being able to manage all the available international and local resources. It will take from 8 to 10 years to see these giants take off, but it can’t be confirmed at this time, Wu Guangli said. Beijing, ChinaAnyway supervision, intellectual property, design and assembly will remain totally Chinese. (World Aeronautical Press Agency – 2009-03-06 05:36 pm)The name of the Chinese jet is C919. The jumbo jet has civil as well as military significance. The American Jumbo’s were used for the AWAC planes, and also used to transport the Space Shuttle.

  • While Boeing is embroiled in malaise and Airbus is unable to lift its head out of a deep recession, China is embarking on huge development projects like Aircraft Careers and Jumbo Jets. China’s Aircraft is genuinely indigenous, unlike the ships of Delhi where the main indigenous part is Tri-Colored Paint.

BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua)– China has named its first home-made jumbo jet C919, which will take off in around eight years, its chief designer Wu Guanghui said on Friday.

“C represents China as well as COMAC, the abbreviation for Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd,” said Wu, who is also the deputy general manager of COMAC, the manufacturer of C919.

“The name also reflects our determination to compete in the international market for jumbo jet. C919 comes after Airbus and Boeing, so you will have ABC in the aviation industry,” said Wu, apolitical advisor who is here attending the annual session of 11th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

The first 9 in the name implies forever in Chinese culture, while 19 means the first jumbo jet produced by China will have 190seats, he said.

Wu said that his company will choose suppliers of engines, airborne equipment, and materials through international bidding, and will encourage foreign suppliers to enter into partnership with Chinese manufacturers.

“We will choose foreign-manufactured products like engines at the beginning phase, but we will also independently do the research and manufacturing work at the same time,” noted Wu.

The Shanghai-based COMAC wasset up in May, 2008 after approval in early 2007 by the State Council, China’s Cabinet. It has a registered capital of 19 billion yuan (2.78 billion U.S. dollars), with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission as the biggest shareholder.

Wu said the jumbo jet project now involves 47 institutions from China and abroad, and that the preliminary general technical design plan and commercial feasibility study have been completed. China names first jumbo jet C919, to take off in 8 years. www.chinaview.cn 2009-03-06 22:46:00

Beijing has now perfected the art of reingineering and has made small aircraft. It has been mass producing fighter aircraftfor a decade. Now it has moved beyond small planes and gone into the business of large commercial aircraft.

Asked when the domestic-made jumbo jets can take flight, Wu said that this still cannot be confirmed, but estimates it will occur within 8 to 10 years.

By the end of next year, Chinese passengers will be able to fly on the ARJ21, China’s independently designed and developed 90-seat regional jet.

Wu commented confidently, “The in-cabin experience is similar to jumbo jets with spacious, comfortable seating, and the jet also features low fuel consumption.”

To date, China has received orders for 208 ARJ21 regional jets from home and abroad. Clients include seven or eight airlines in China.

Wu disclosed that the ARJ21 is priced at around 28 million USD each, less than foreign planes of the same type. “The foreign planes are generally priced at around 45 million USD each.”By People’s Daily Online

As one of the highlights of the 4 trillion yuan investment package, the domestically produced jumbo jet project has received close attention since its official launch last year. How has the jumbo jet project progressed? When will the jumbo jets independently produced by China take flight? Reporters paid a visit to the Chinese jumbo jet project’s headquarters in Shanghai to find answers to these questions of public concern.

Jin Zhuanglong, General Manager of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), said, “We have recruited experts nationwide, mobilized over 40 organizations and have more than 400 scientific and technological personnel living together and debating the topic. By integrating our company’s current strength, we have initially completed the general technology plan of jumbo passenger jets.”

Reporters learned that a preliminary design plan for the Chinese-produced jumbo jet C919 has already been completed. The completion of the initial design plan however, is merely the first step. The domestically produced jumbo jet project still faces the challenge of making breakthroughs in numerous key technologies, including the most critical technology of engines and advanced composite materials.

C919 will be equipped with new-generation engines that are more advanced than those of the Boeing 737. However, as researching and developing engines for jumbo jets are highly specialized and require a long period of time, C919, scheduled to take the maiden flight in 2014, will not be fitted with Chinese-produced engines and will need to purchase engines from global manufacturers.

According to the plan, domestically produced jumbo jet C919 will start its first test flight in 2014 and will be delivered to airlines for operation in 2016.

The jumbo jet project: The total investment will reach 200 billion yuan.

COMAC Chairman Zhang Qingwei told reporters that the jumbo jet program will invest another 60 billion yuan in the next three to five years and by the time the jumbo jet is put on the market, the total funds invested in all aspects of the program will reach 200 billion yuan.

Zhangalso said, “We should be able to invest 30 billion yuan in research within the first three years. Another 30 billion yuan will be used toward capacity building. Three big centers will be built in the Shanghai region, and if we include our headquarters as a functional organ, we would be investing another 30 billion yuan within three to five years.

According to relevant reports, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), COMAC’s largest stockholder, has invested 6 billion yuan, holding 31 percent of the stock, and the Shanghai GuoshengGroup, established by the Shanghai Municipal Government, has invested 5 billion yuan, or 26 percent of the stock. Other shareholders include China National Aviation Holding Company, Baosteel, Chinalco, the Sinochem Corporation and other large-scale state-owned enterprises. Zhang said that among the 30 billion yuan invested in research within the first three years, the state’s investment will account for less than one-third of that budget while the rest of the sum will depend on capital investment from other sectors of society.

Zhang said, “To successfully develop this jumbo jet and put it on the market, it should gradually foster capabilities that include the availability of supporting products, the forming of the basis for the development of the jumbo jet and the establishment of infrastructure. Investment in the above fields, plus investment in related industries, will reach approximately 200 billion yuan. “

The term “jumbo jet” generally refers to transportation aircraft witha gross take-off weight exceeding 100 tons. It includes military and civil large-scale transport planes, and the trunk-line passenger aircraft with over 150 seats. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) places jumbo jet manufacturing at the top of its list of knowledge-based economy industries. Currently, only the US, Russia and the EU have the ability to build jumbo jets.

The Chinese jumbo jet program was formally established as a project in 2007. COMAC was established later in May 2008 in Shanghai, marking the substantive start of China’s research efforts toward its own jumbo jets. C919 was formally designated as the first model of the domestically produced jumbo jet program.?By People’s Daily Online

Currently, a proposal for a preliminary design has already been completed for the domestically-made C919 jumbo jet with 168 seats as its standard configuration. The manufacturing division revealed that it will be capable of producing 150 domestically-made jumbo jets each year, with overall output reaching 3000 planes, which will place the company third in the international jumbo jet market. It is planned for the aircraft to have its first test flight in 2014 and to be delivered for commercial use by airlines in 2016.

The domestically produced jumbo jet has 168 seats as the standard configuration

At a news conference for the 13th Aviation Expo China on April 29, Chen Jin, director of the Sales and Marketing Department at the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the manufacturer of the domestically-made jumbo jet, revealed that the domestically-made C919 jumbo jet has already completed its preliminary design proposal and submitted the feasibility report to the State Council. Chen further stated that the plan is to have the first test flight in 2014 so that it can be used for commercial use by airlines in 2016. The C919 jumbo jet will have a total of 168 seats as its standard configuration but the production of an elongated version is open for future consideration.

The engine will be superior to that of the Boeing 737

Chen said that the jumbo jet will adopt a new generation engine superior to that of the Boeing 737, featuring increased economic performance, reduced emissions and enhanced comfort. However, in the beginning stages of delivery for commercial use by airlines in 2016, the jumbo jet will be unable to use domestically-made engines, so the internationally accepted practice of global sourcing will be adopted. “But our domestically-made engines will be used on next-generation models such as the C929 and the C939.”

Global sourcing will also be adopted with the C919 parts and materials, and established products from vendors already holding international airworthiness certificates will be used, with the related invitations for bidding currently under way. “The Aviation Industry Corporation of China is supposed to obtain an international airworthiness certificate soon.” Chen said that as a national strategy, the manufacture of domestically-made jumbo jets will surely prioritize purchasing domestically-made parts, boosting related industries.

Domestically produced jumbo jets to reach 3,000 units

Chen said COMAC will build a research and development center, a general assembly manufacturing center and a customer service center in Shanghai. After completion, it will be able to produce 150 jumbo jets and 50 regional aircrafts per year. The three centers are currently expanding their staff size. Both the R&D center and the customer service center will each recruit an additional 2,000 people. The general assembly manufacturing center will expand its staff size from the current 2,000 to 20,000.

“The total number of domestically produced jumbo jets will ultimately reach 3,000, ranking COMAC third in the international jumbo jet market after Boeing and Airbus.” By People’s Daily Online

Only time will tell, if the plane will be produced by the next decade or not, but the strategy is sound. China is using vendors from around the globe to supply parts to its new venture. That means that China will be creating stake holders in the US and Europe who will be loyal to COMAC.
