With this terse and cryptic announcement, the Indian sponsored Elam Tigers surrendered to the Sri Lankan forces. Sri Lanka won and India lost. While Indian Tamils and the Bharati security establishment continues to support the Tamil rebles with safe havens, arms and equipment, the Sinhalese majority has finally overcome the Indian terror and Colombo is in the last stages of victory over the LTTE terrorists.

London, May 28 (PTI) Pakistan’s supply of high-tech military equipment and positioning of some of its highly trained Army officers in Sri Lanka played a key role in the ultimate defeat of Tamil Tigers, Pakistani media has claimed.

“It was the Pakistani defence cooperation with Sri Lanka as the largest suppliers of high-tech military equipment that played a major role in the ultimate defeat of the LTTE at the hands of the Sri Lankan army,” The News quoted well placed sources in the Pakistani establishment as saying.

The newspaper said the defence cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan had grown significantly in recent years as Islamabad, unlike New Delhi, had no problems supplying the state-of-the-art weaponry to Lankan army to accelerate its counter-insurgency operations against the LTTE which finally ended with the killing of Tamil chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran.

It was exactly a year ago, in the first week of May 2008, that Sri Lankan Army Chief Lt Gen Fonseka visited Pakistan and held detailed talks with his Pakistani counterpart Chief of Army Staff General Asfaq Parvez Kayani to finalise the purchase of high-tech arms for the Lankan armed forces, which were embroiled in an intense battle with the LTTE forces even at that time. New Delhi has repeatedly expressed serious concern over Sri Lanka’s continued reliance on Pakistan for arms. The Indian anxiety comes after reports mid last week claimed that Sri Lanka has ordered emergency military supplies from India’s arch rival Pakistan, as hostilities between government forces and LTTE rebels took a turn for the worse.Agency reports claimed that the Army has sought 150,000 rounds of 60mm mortar ammunition and as many hand grenades for immediate delivery to Sri Lanka from Pakistan.

“Sri Lanka has requested US$ 25 million worth of 81mm, 120mm and 130mm mortar ammunition to be delivered within a month,” IANS said, in a news report filed in New Delhi. The report claimed that the military links between Islamabad and Colombo are worrying India because they allow Pakistan access to Sri Lankan defence and intelligence establishments. New Delhi mid last year publicly expressed displeasure over Sri Lanka’s military purchases from Pakistan and China.

The Sri Lankan army has vowed the Tamil Tiger rebels will be defeated within the next two days. The army calls this the final offensive against the separatist guerillas. But the government has said before that victory was at hand in the battles against the rebels. Colombia-based military analyst Iqbal Athas says this confidence was inspired by the recent success on the battle field.

“The government had hoped to finish the fighting even earlier. In the recent past the troops have recovered a vast array of territory. Only a small area of four square kilometers remains to be recaptured. It is a designated no-fire zone. But it is no secret that they are meeting with stiff resistance from the remaining rebels.”

Iqbal Athas of Jane’s Defence Weekly estimates there a fewer than 300 rebels remaining.

‘They are the hard core rebels, the rest has perished. Their military machine is very badly dented. They have lost a lot of weaponry, both during combat and during raids on to their positions including camps and hide outs.” Radio Netherlands.

The present window of opportunity may be the last one for Sri Lanka to retain its unitary status. If the present military operations shouldn’t be stopped, Sri Lanka needs the assistance of others to help sustain it. India which is a significant arms provider will be replaced by China and Pakistan much to its dismay. Possibly Pakistani and/or Chinese military presence in Lanka may be required to keep India at bay. It may also lead up to the creation of a multi-player tournament of war-games in the North. In that case India’s concerns over the present humanitarian tragedy in the North will be totally ridiculed. Sri Lankan authorities must immediately and firmly request Chinese warships to dock in Lankan ports to ward-off any possible Indian intervention. It has proven historically that whenever the blessing of the sole Asian superpower was invoked in the south Asian region, India has always collapsed. Good examples are Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet and Burma. Just a couple of years back when the Nepali crisis broke out, India did everything in its dirty hands to retain the king in power but when faced with Chinese pressure, it collapsed and Chinese-backed Maoist rebels eventually grabbed power. COLOMBO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Sri Lanka’s government troops have taken another strategic location in the island’s north. The troops have entered the town of Oddusudan on the A34 highway, defense officials said Sunday.

The troops had entered Oddusudan from the north and western directions. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Airforce said that four separate air raids on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebel locations were conducted on Sunday.

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan press on Saturday toasted the military’s capture of the Tamil Tiger political capital, hailing it as a “watershed” event in the drawn out battle with the separatist rebels.

“The fall of Kilinochchi … marks a watershed in the current humanitarian mission to liberate northern Tamil civilians from the LTTE tyranny,” the state-run Daily News said.

The Island newspaper said the Tigers’ decision to give up Kilinochchi and move to the adjoining coastal district of Mullaittivu was a “tacit” admission that it cannot go on fighting.

The Daily Mirror said the government must move swiftly and work out a political solution to resolve the conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 1972.

Similar calls were made by the Sinhalese-language Rivira and Divaina newspapers.

“So now the government has first to ensure that the Tamil people in the area (island’s north) who have suffered for long are provided with all that they need to get back to their normal lives,” the Daily Mirror said. afp
