Why are Pakistani peace deals in Swat considered capitulation and US peace deals in Faluja & Kabul considered diplomacy? Why are American discussions with the Taliban advertised as statesmanship and Pakistani contacts with them eyed with suspicion? Why is it that Britain can talk to the insurgents in lands that it occupies and Pakistanis cannot talk peace within its own borders? Why does the Washington Post make the peace deal in Faluja as one of the triumph of General Patraeus, but perpetually harangues Pakistan on peace. Why is it that Dawn mimics the stories in the Wall Street Journal constantly attacking the Pakistani state? Truth not Orwellian propaganda: Best article on Afghanistan anywhere.

In the early 1900s, a crusty British general, Andrew Skeen, wrote a guide to military operations in the Pashtun tribal belt, in what is now Pakistan‘s North-West Frontier Province. His first piece of advice: “When planning a military expedition into Pashtun tribal areas, the first thing you must plan is your retreat. All expeditions into this area sooner or later end in retreat under fire.”

The Western media is doing what it does best, use every opportunity to destroy the legitimacy of those who it considers its enemies. It blatantly calls for the destruction of nation states that do not fit into its neat little corners. China is too big, Russia is to dangerous to mess with. Bharat is a lackey bought for a nuclear deal, and a song and a dance. Tariq Ali puts it more eloquently than most.

The dribble coming out the mouths of Admiral Mullen, Mr. Holbrooke, General Patraeus proves that this cabal doesn’t have a clue on how to deal with the stubborn Pakistanis. Hillary Clinton’s brouhaha about Swat and Buner last week confirms it. the veiled threats and the not so veiled ultimatums from Washington display their utter discomfiture. Their frustration can be judged by their obscene communication and disgusting acts in Iraq and Afghanistan. All the kings horses and all the kings men have not been able to fix Pakistan. Their abominable concoctions like Af-Pak insult the intelligence of sane analysts. Columnists and writers used to live in dilapidated quarters and congested slums. Now they occupy ostentatious palaces complete with chauffeurs, servants and a fleet of cars. The language of “Do More” and “Existential threat” have been noted by the Pakistani people. In recent polls the US shows up at the bottom of the ladder of countries in Pakistan.

Keep it up Mr. Holbrooke and surely Anti-Americanism will increase. Every threat takes it a notch up.

The history of the Khyber is not always in teleological progression. Some try to portray history as the fault of Pakistan. These servants of Teutonic Knights are on the payroll of the White Man’s burden trying to ram down a philosophy that dictates to Pakistan and Pakistanis; who the friends are; who the enemies are; what is good for Pakistan; and what is bad for Islamabad.

Husain Haqqani the Pakistani Ambassador to the USA has been part of this cabal that has been working against Pakistani interests. He is recently changed his colors, eating up his own words. His current interviews are diametrically opposed to his earlier writings. This writer has been communicating with him for years. He was opposed to aid to Pakistan and has written and said anything and everything possible against the Pakistan Army and Intelligence services.

Pakistan’s Dawn (dawn.com) is their torch. It picks those that are not patriotic. It then serves as a beacon to the ingrates and the ungrateful. Their consanguinity is with the land and the people of Pakistan, but their allegiance is to capitals around the world.

 * Ambassador to US says Swat peace deal aimed at isolating extremists

WASHINGTON: Pakistan needs support and assistance in rolling back the Taliban insurgency, not just homilies on the virtues of fighting extremists, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani said on Friday.

Haqqani asked the Western powers to stop criticising the state institutions that were bearing the brunt of the fight against terrorists as he hit back at critics of Islamabad’s anti-terrorism policy.

Writing in the USA Today, Haqqanisaid by engaging with the local people in Swat, Pakistan was striving to wean the reconcilable elements away from violent extremists, something the US had already tried successfully in Iraq and was attempting in Afghanistan.

“There is a very big difference between dialogue and capitulation. The US succeeded in Fallujah, Iraq, through a careful and methodical programme that separated the indigenous populations from radical terrorists, thereby turning the tide of the insurgency.”

Isolation: “The US is pursuing the same strategy today in Afghanistan as it attempts to pursue dialogue with reconcilable elements in an effort to isolate the violent terrorist elements,” he pointed out. He said the Pakistani government was doing the same thing in Swat, where parliament last week mandated a traditional judicial system based on Islam.

“We are trying to persuade elements of the civilian population who are aligned with, but who are not part of, the extremist Taliban to accept the writ of government, to put down their arms and to reject violence.” “There is no abdication of responsibility towards Pakistan’s people or the international community.”

If the hopes of restoring peace through dialogue fail, the Pakistan Army was willing and able to confront the Taliban on the battlefield, as had been demonstrated in FATA, Haqqani said.

During the News Hour of the Public Broadcasting Service, Haqqani said the critics should not blow Taliban threats in Pakistan out of proportions. “There is a difference, you need to be alarmed and concerned but need not feel as if Pakistan or Islamabad is about to fall tomorrow. I think there has to be a sense of realism,” he said. app. The Daily Times. Pakistan needs support, not lecture: Haqqani

Haqqani is now hearing his own words.
