The US hubris allows it to bomb Pakistani territory at will, just like the U-2 used to fly over the USSR at will. In time the USSR found a way to shoot down the U-2s and caused a huge embarresment for Washington. One of these days, the insurgents will be able to shoot down the drones. That day, there will be tremendous frustration in the corridors of power across the Potomic.

The President is once again violating international law by invading yet another nation which has not attacked the United States. Once again, he places our troops and our reputation at risk. Once again, he creates more enemies for America. Pakistan’s objections to the illegal US Predator strikes inside the country’s border should be a clear indication of how Pakistan would respond to another illegal attack upon their sovereign nation.

“Pakistan is a nuclear flash point on the Asian subcontinent. This situation requires intense diplomacy. The United States under George Bush is playing with fire, creating more instability, killing innocent Pakistanis, imperiling our troops in the region and weakening the hold our allies have on their democratic governments. Instead of limiting aggression, Bush expands it.

Congress must intervene legislatively and legally to block Bush from continuing down this dangerous path. US Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Spet 13th, 2008

Pakistan has the capacity and the technology to shoot down American drones.Pakistan mulls downing US drones. There has been tremendous pressure on the obsequious PPPP Government to ask the US to halt the attacks. There are even some rumors that the Zardari Government has a “wink wink nod nod” agreement with the US which allows the CIA drones to bomb “terrorists” in Pakistan. During the Clinton era at the height of the Monica Lewisnky sex scandal, President Clinton tried to draw the attention away from the his personal failings and fired a few of cruise missiles at All of them missed their stated targets. However a couple did not explode. These Cruise missiles were picked up by the Pakistanis and reversed engineered. Now Pakistan has Cruise Missile technology which Pakistan uses to further improve all its missiles.

During the Afghan war the US sent hundreds of Stinger Missiles to those fighting the USSR. This technology is now ubiquitous not only in Pakistan but the rest of the world.

Pakistan has Hataf and Shaheen Missiles–some with land to air versions. In summary if Pakistan allows he Pakhtuns to begin shooting the drones that have brought death and destruction to the millions this will escalate things and affect the West’s war in Afghanistan.

Shoot down US drones: Shireen Mazari. All segments of Pakistani society are enraged by the US attacks on Pakistani territory. The intellectuals and the elite are mad, and feel betrayed. For decades the elite, usually foriegn bred have been the stalwarts of the pro-American Pakistani foreign policy. The media and the youth have enjoyed Americanism and American products, from food, to music to English. The youth feel backstabbed. The extremsits are telling the government “we told you so–the USA was unreliable” and bombs its friends.

The US Afghan occupation is very unpopular in Pakistan

After the choking of the war, the insurgents will now target supplies in Uzbekistan and the Central Asia Republics Reality check on War in Afghanistan

The media is exasperated, sandwiched between an onslought of Anti-Americanism that flows from the Hindukush and the government that remains committed to a strong relationship with the USA. The Army is the lynchpin. From the 50s to 80s the Pakistan Army was very pro-American. It was part of SEATO and CENTO. Then becuase of a decade of sanctions, the army moved into its own isolationist shell. Prevez Musharraf and others of his generation were the firse cadre of Pakistani defense personnel which were not trianed in the USA.

  • Bush & Obama both war mongers. Barack wants a different war
  • Comprehending the consequences of the “Do More” chorus
  • Can PM Gilani make himself heard above the USA “Do More” rhetoric?
  • The Pakistani military has the means to shoot down the US Drones. The Drones, slow moving bulky and  lethargic can be shot down. The politicals will in Islamabad is scared of a political backlash from Washington. This has created a humongous gulf between the government and the people of Pakistan. Any Pakistani government that continues to allow terror to be rained down on the people of Pakistan will be unable to survive. Pakistan can and will shoot down US drones

The hard reality is that the US is going to become an increasingly hostile state towards Pakistan under Obama. So it is time to alter course. We need to renegotiate the entire cooperation with this new US administration, keeping in mind the now-established Indo-US strategic partnership. We need to find our own means of countering the drone attacks-rather than helplessly waiting for US goodwill.

Our Air Chief had declared we have the technical capability, and we certainly do, including our cruise missiles. So use them to attack the drones in defence of our territory. If the military is too timid for this defence of our national soil, then at least stop the mercenary intelligence sharing, close the clandestine CIA stations and troop actions in FATA and our western border. Reclaim the bases and end access to NATO supplies. All these moves can be done incrementally and we will realise the limitations of US ability to move against us without damaging their own cause. The most painless beginning can be made by recalling our ambassador to the US “for consultations.” Shireen Mazari

The drone bombing is counter-productive and does not help the war against the insurgents.

Already the Polls indicate that Mr. Zardari’s popularity ratings are in the basement. Mr. Nawaz Sharif is well trusted in Washington. His popularity ratings are much higher than that of Mr. Zardari. Political prssure will force the government in Pakistan to change the compliant policy and there are long term dangers for the US in South Asia.

David Kilcullen (Author The Accidental  Guerilla), Adivosor to General Patraeus, a Senior Fellow at the Center for New American Security on GPS with Fareed Zakaria eloquently describes the fact that Rupee News has been underlining for years.

90% of the insurgents called the “Taliban” do not share the ideology of Mulla Omar. The drones swell the ranks of the followers of old “Taliban“.
