All civilized nations on earth are celebrating the annihilation of the most virulent and dangerous terror group in the world–the Indian spawned, trained and supported so called “Tamil Tigers” officially called the LTTE. Pakistan has provided arms and equipment Sri Lanka. It has also provided training facilities to Lanka pilots. In 2008 the Pakistan Army promised Lanka one shipload of arms every month. When needed Pakistan has air dropped arms to Lanka forces in the field. This air lift was extremely important in taking back Jaffna from the terrorists which really turned the tide of battle in Colombo’s favor. While Indian Tamils and the Bharati security establishment continues to support the Tamil rebles with safe havens, arms and equipment, the Sinhalese majority has finally overcome the Indian terror and Colombo is in the last stages of victory over the LTTE terrorists. The Sri Lankan army has vowed the Tamil Tiger rebels will be defeated within the next two days. The army calls this the final offensive against the separatist guerillas. But the government has said before that victory was at hand in the battles against the rebels. Colombia-based military analyst Iqbal Athas says this confidence was inspired by the recent success on the battle field.

“The government had hoped to finish the fighting even earlier. In the recent past the troops have recovered a vast array of territory. Only a small area of four square kilometers remains to be recaptured. It is a designated no-fire zone. But it is no secret that they are meeting with stiff resistance from the remaining rebels.”

Iqbal Athas of Jane’s Defence Weekly estimates there a fewer than 300 rebels remaining.

‘They are the hard core rebels, the rest has perished. Their military machine is very badly dented. They have lost a lot of weaponry, both during combat and during raids on to their positions including camps and hide outs.” Radio Netherlands.

In April 2007 Sri Lanka signed a classified $37.6 million deal to buy Chinese ammunition and ordnance for its army and navy, according to Jane’s Defence Weekly. It also bought radar equipment in a separate deal.

More significantly, however, China then gave Sri Lanka, apparently free of charge, six F7 jet fighters last year, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. The Sri Lankan Air Force urgently needed the aircraft after a daring raid by the Tigers’ air wing destroyed ten military planes in 2007. One of the Chinese fighters shot down one of the Tigers’ aircraft a year later.

The present window of opportunity may be the last one for Sri Lanka to retain its unitary status. If the present military operations shouldn’t be stopped, Sri Lanka needs the assistance of others to help sustain it. India which is a significant arms provider will be replaced by China and Pakistan much to its dismay. Possibly Pakistani and/or Chinese military presence in Lanka may be required to keep India at bay. It may also lead up to the creation of a multi-player tournament of war-games in the North. In that case India’s concerns over the present humanitarian tragedy in the North will be totally ridiculed. Sri Lankan authorities must immediately and firmly request Chinese warships to dock in Lankan ports to ward-off any possible Indian intervention. It has proven historically that whenever the blessing of the sole Asian superpower was invoked in the south Asian region, India has always collapsed. Good examples are Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet and Burma. Just a couple of years back when the Nepali crisis broke out, India did everything in its dirty hands to retain the king in power but when faced with Chinese pressure, it collapsed and Chinese-backed Maoist rebels eventually grabbed power. Rebel groups within India have close links to some of India’s neighbours. As an example, take the case of Maoist rebels in India who are active in 15 out of 29 states. Then there are Islamic terror groups active mostly in the western sector possibly with links to neighbouring countries. Isolation of Lanka exposes it to unwarranted nonsense from one of the world’s most unwanted neighbours.

COLOMBO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Sri Lanka’s government troops have taken another strategic location in the island’s north. The troops have entered the town of Oddusudan on the A34 highway, defense officials said Sunday.

The troops had entered Oddusudan from the north and western directions. Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Airforce said that four separate air raids on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebel locations were conducted on Sunday.

Lanka has been able to defeat the terrorists with the help of Chinese technolgoy and Pakistani arms. Not only did Pakistan supply the arms to Lanka in its time of need, Pakistan also delivered the arms in the battlefield.

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan press on Saturday toasted the military’s capture of the Tamil Tiger political capital, hailing it as a “watershed” event in the drawn out battle with the separatist rebels.

“The fall of Kilinochchi … marks a watershed in the current humanitarian mission to liberate northern Tamil civilians from the LTTE tyranny,” the state-run Daily News said.

The Island newspaper said the Tigers’ decision to give up Kilinochchi and move to the adjoining coastal district of Mullaittivu was a “tacit” admission that it cannot go on fighting.

The Daily Mirror said the government must move swiftly and work out a political solution to resolve the conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 1972.

Similar calls were made by the Sinhalese-language Rivira and Divaina newspapers.

“So now the government has first to ensure that the Tamil people in the area (island’s north) who have suffered for long are provided with all that they need to get back to their normal lives,” the Daily Mirror said. afp
