The Bangaldesh National Party allied with the Bangladesh Jamaat e Islami had won the elections two years ago. Begun Khaleda Zia was prevented from taking power. The BNP leaders were harassed in the name of “corruption” and the government tried to exile her. Though on paper the army applied pressure on both the Awami League and the Bangaldeshi National Party, in actuality all this was a farce.
“I thank the chief election commissioner for implementing a stage-managed election. This election is not acceptable to the BNP,” said Zia during a short address broadcast on private TV station NTV just after midnight following an emergency meeting with party leaders.

11 million voters were disenfranchised in Bangladesh. The BNP has proof of systemic fraud? How could the elections results be so lopsided. How could the electorate swing so fast in two years?
“We have confirmed reports of rigging and other irregularities in many polling stations across the country,” she told reporters, giving her first reaction to the election that marks the south Asian country’s return to democracy after two years of emergency rule by an army-backed interim government.
“So we reject the election outcome,” she said.
“We are collecting details of more irregularities and will give to the media and appropriate authorities over next few days,” she told reporters at her Dhaka party office. Begum Khaleda Zia. Associated Press
The neutral care taker government was forced to resign and hand over power to a pro-Awami League person. Mao Ze Dung said a very long time ago “political power grown out the barrel of a gun”. Thosw who have power impose their decisions–elections or no elections. Allende in Chile had won the elections but was not allowed to keep power by Pinochet. For a decade Pinochet continued to wage war on the Allende followers.
…rivals led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia accused Wajed’s group of vote-buying and dirty tricks. The charges raised the specter of a return to the divisive accusations, work stoppages and street demonstrations that have made it difficult at times for leaders to govern effectively.
“… not accept the election,” said Ataur Rahman, a professor at the University of Dhaka. “That could jeopardize parliamentary government. We want a more meaningful democracy and a functioning parliament, but that might not take place.” Bangladesh stability is fragile as former prime minister wins election.. but rumblings of dissent are growing.
The prospect for instability also raised concern that the military could step in again.
“It is difficult to rule out the possibility of the army taking over if there’s massive mismanagement or public unrest during Hasina’s tenure,” said Rahman, the University of Dhaka professor. LA Times. By Mark Magnier and Nurul Alam, 11:57 PM PST, December 30, 2008
In a clear indication of the times, the Indian newspapers and media is ecstatic in the Awami League victory. The Times of India screamed what is on the minds of Indian policy makers.
Hasina’s victory could be good news for India

Whether this is good for India or not, only time will tell. There was mourning in Dlehi on August 14th 1975 when Hasina Mujib’s fahter will killed by the opponents of Mujib and his backers in India.
The situation is very simialr to the one in Algeria when the Islamic Salvation Front which had won the elections was prevented to take power in Alegeria. Another analogy is the Gaza where Hamas was prevented to take power even though it had won the elections.
The next two days are curcial when the world will find out if the country will face riots or not. The Indian establishment has been preparing for this rigged result for two years so it is prepared to stick the “terrorist” label to those that have been robbed of power in Bangladesh.
Ms Zia’s alliance won just 31 seats in parliament, electoral officials say
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, defeated in Monday’s parliamentary elections, has rejected the results saying the vote was rigged.
“We have confirmed reports of rigging and other irregularities in many polling stations across the country,” she told reporters in Dhaka.
Election officials said earlier that Ms Zia’s rival Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League had won a landslide victory.
On Tuesday, at least one person was killed and more than a dozen were injured in clashes between rival political activists in the northern Pabna area, officials said.

The purpose of the two year transition government was to give the Awami League an edge so that it could win the elections. It seems that the Indian establishment along with RAW and the Awami League has achieved its objectives.
Dramatic reversal
In her first reaction to Monday’s voting, Ms Zia said she believed the results did not reflect the people’s will.
Sheikh Hasina and her allies have pulled off a stunning victory
“So we reject the election outcome,” she said.
“We are collecting details of more irregularities and will give them to the media and appropriate authorities over next few days,” she said.
Ms Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party alliance has complained of fraud and forgery at more than 200 polling stations.
Observers say the next two days will be vital as to whether the result is accepted or sparks violence.
Election officials earlier said that the party of Sheikh Hasina, another former prime minister had secured more than 260 seats in parliament, while Ms Zia’s BNP won 31.
The Election Commission has not yet declared a final official result.
There was a massive turnout for the election, which was overseen by hundreds of international monitors who largely pronounced the poll fair and credible.
The win for the Awami League is a dramatic reversal in fortunes for the two parties, says the BBC’s Mark Dummett in Dhaka. In 2001, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won the election overwhelmingly. BBC. Khaleda Zia rejects ‘rigged’ poll
