Already the colossal financial impact is being felt by India’s center of commerce and currency. The stock market is closed and foreigners who used to think of Mumbai as safe have all fled. Bollywood was closed, and the hotel industry suffered huge losses. Israelis had made the Nariman House as an informal center for various activities in India and the neighborhood was targeted. Perhaps now it may reduce its public profile and hide its presence. The long term impact includes less foreign presence in India in general and Mumbai in particular. The impact on Indian business is enormous. If business has a choice between Mumbai or Beijing, they will choose China.  the Hinduist parties have the most to gain from this sort of turmoil. The BJP, Shiv Sena and the RSS can now blame the West, the Christians, and the Muslims and make electoral gains.

The world has already concluded that India is not safe. With over a 100 terror groups and huge chunks of territory not in the control of the central government, the new images on the American TV screen simply correspond to the reality of the Indian countryside. The city of 18 million was not only a siege of Mumbai it put India on the watch list. Americans and Europeans are now warned not to visit India.

Just a few days ago, in a bizarre and goulish expression of glee, Indians made fun of the ills of Pakistan. The long term impact of the terror is yet to be determined, but in the eyes of the world, India is not separate and distinct from Afghanistan and the rest of West Asia. Neither is it immune to random acts of terror. What afflicts Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan also afflicts India.

Pakistani, American, European and world capitals were quick to condemn the terror in Mumbai. Simultaneously US and EU embassies issues warnings to their citizens and stopped them from visiting India. Most of the sports events have been canceled and Australian and other cancellations are expected.
