One of the consequences of the the aerial drone bombing in Pakistan and the intrusion into Pakistani territory is the growing Anti-Americanism in Pakistan. Iran is already Anti-American already and has been for several decades. Pakistanis have traditional been Pro-American. The elite and the urban areas are still Pro-American. The villages have been ambiguous or pro-American. Now at least two provinces are solidly Anti-American and even the elite has been pushed into positions that cannot be considered good for America. By humiliating the Pakistan Army, constantly bombing the territory and violating the airspace of Pakistan, huge sections of Pakistani society now share the Iranian point of view. If this drone bombing continues, the fire of Anti-Americanism now solidly encompasses the land between the Euphrates to the Indus. This is not good either for America or for Pakistan. Certainly it is not good for the world.

Barack Obama wants to bring about “change that we believe in“. However he is spouting rhetoric against reminiscent of George W. Bush’s false accusations against Iraq.

Today Barack Obama is crying at the tone and the decibel level of the rhetoric against him. However he is using the same type of rhetoric against the Pakistani–portraying them as bad, duplicitous and evil–charges that he himself faces. If Barack Obama had any vision, he needs to show it, not only about bipartisanship on Capital Hill. If Barack Obama is the statesmen and wants to talk with all those that disagree with America, then he cannot stop at the Hindu Kush. Barack Obama needs to learn from history and not repeat the Mossadagh episode that turned all Iranians against the Stars and Strips.

Obama’s bluster has emboldened the current machinery to bomb Pakistan and send in the marines, some of them out-of-uniform. Barack Obama and John McCain has to stop demonizing the Pakistanis who have been allies of the USA for the past six decades–otherwise they are no better than the Neocons who own the media and regurgitate nonsensical Islamphobia on a routine basis.

30,000 FATA residents who faught with the CIA to defeat Russia are now dead. 300,000 of the same Pakhtuns who sacrificed 2 million for the sake of the Satrs and Stripes are refugees in their own country.

All this does not auger well for America and its policy in West Asia.

Pakistan and Iran are working on the Iran-Pakistan pipeline without India. Iran is also providing Pakistan with 1000 MW of electricity. Iran is also going to help Pakistan build power plants. Small steps that may grow into lasting relationship.

Pakistan is moving towards Iran, and if this relationship is consecrated as an alliance, the US access to Central Asia will be blocked for generations.

Pakistan to buy 1000 MW electricity from Iran: Updated at: 1920 PST, Friday, October 10, 2008
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Friday requested Iran to help to meet its growing energy crisis by giving oil on deferred payment.

The request was made by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during talks with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki.

Talking to newsmen jointly after the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Iran’s has already a system of three month deferred payment but Pakistan has requested to increase this time period.

He said his counterpart has agreed to take up the issue with his government and the cabinet for increasing the time limit for the deferred payment.

Qureshi said Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) pipeline project was of strategic significance and as it has been agreed between in a meeting of President of Pakistan and Iran in New York last month, it has been again stressed that it should be on fast track for the economic benefit of the two countries.

The Foreign Minister said Pakistan is committed to the IPI project and would go ahead even the third party did not join it at initial stages. He however appreciated India’s decision to join the project.

He stressed that Pakistan wants that pipeline project should be initiated bilaterally between Pakistan and Iran while India could join afterwards whenever it so desires.

The Minister said both the countries also agreed to establish a Joint Financing Company for the IPI project.

Referring to the outstanding issues relating to IPI, the Foreign Minister said out of the five issues, four have been resolved while the fifth issue relating to pricing of the gas being sorted out and it would be settled soon.

The Minister said both the countries also agreed to enhance people-to-people relations between the two countries and called for more exchanges between the parliamentarians of Pakistan and Iran and decided to further strengthen infrastructure facilities.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan has also interested to buy additional 1000 MW electricity from Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said, “We condemn terrorist activities that took place in the last several weeks in Pakistan, targeting stability of our neighboring country Pakistan.”

He said every body will loose from the instability and insecurity situation.

The Iranian Foreign Minister however said efforts should be made to consider root cause of such terrorist attacks and other happenings based on the war against terror.

He said Iran has a lot of promises in Afghanistan but the policies of last seven years to tackle this issue have failed. He said being two important neighbors, Pakistan and Iran have to take measures to cooperate and help each other to ensure stability and security in the region.

The Iranian Minister said political will and determination of the leaders of Pakistan and Iran should be given due consideration and realised to resolve this issue.

Referring to the importance of 1000 km border between Pakistan and Iran, the Foreign Minister said, “We have to protect it, because of projects like IPI, road and railway links.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister said, “We will not allow any person or group of any other name to violate this border to suffer the people of both sides of border.”

Foreign Minister Mottaki termed the stability and security of Pakistan as stability and security of Iran.

He agreed on the need for expansion in relations in political, trade, investment, culture and other field

I m astonished 2 read ur analysis of pakistani people as pro USA traditionally. Clearification is therefore mendatory for me. People of pakistan has certainly no doubt about US interest in its degree of loyality towards pakistan. the true face of US is seen by our generations starting from early 60s , 65, 71, 79, 84, 88, 98 and after 9/11. General public do understand how the war on terror is driven from afghanistan to pakistan area n the motive behind. Its our politicians and beaurocracy who is handicaped n have no vision to define the line of action. The reason is only bad luck of pakistan in getting sincere n loyal leadership. US has otherwise nothing 2 do with our public rather she just grip our leadership n play remotely.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it. Can we discuss this a bit. I agree that the relationship has been patchy but on the whole Pakistani have not been Anti-American.

I remember the American GI truck going to their bases. On the way little school children would line up and wave at them. They would stop and hand out Mars bars and even “footbals”.

I remember having my first hamburger on a US base.

I am talking historically. In the 50s Pakistan eagerly sought American help in staying independent of India which wanted to gobble up Pakistan. It was only because of SEATO and CENTO that Pakistan was able to survive Indian threats and aggression.

Surely Ayub Khan and others were very pro-American.

In the 80s, Americans were very welcome all over Pakistan. There are pictures of Zbig Brezinski making speeches in FATA and Waziiristan extolling them to wage holy war (See Holy Warriors). Kindly read the book Charlie Wilson’s war.

The Anti-Americanism in Pakistan today is unprecendented and due to the ill planned policies of the administration. The USAs good deeds in Pakistan all get plastered over because of the drone bombings and the intrusions.

Many believe that like a bad marriage, this should come to an end and an amicable divorce should be instituted.

    Best Regards,

    Moin
