| RUPEE NEWS | October 3rd, 2008 | Moin Ansari | معین آنصآرّی | اخبار روپیہ | Mr. Zardari has apparently signed a transit deal with India on the sidelines of the UN summit and granted India transit rights through Pakistan to Afghanistan. This had been a bone of contention between Pakistan and India several decades. Apparently nothing was given in return for the favor. This after the fact that Mr. Zardari also halted all opposition to India at the IAEA and NSG forums. We wrote about it in “The CIA Connection” on 27th November 2007.

There exists unambiguous proof of Indian involvement in the situation that Pakistan is confronted with today at the hands of the terrorists and militants. NWFP Governor Owais Ghani (who formerly held the office of Governor Balochistan) has persistently pointed towards the Indian involvement in Pakistan ’s predicaments in Balochistan and Tribal Areas. Former President Pervez Musharraf handed over documentary evidence of Indian mischief in Balochistan to US President George W. Bush during his visit to the region in 2006. Yet we have opted to yield to New Delhi on matters of vital national interests in pursuit of the policy of appeasement. While India is bent upon undermining Pakistan ’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, we are facilitating India to consolidate economically, which in turn will help boost its military might. M Ashraf Mirza.
Pursuing its “On to the Oxus” policy first operationalized by Lord Curzon, India has tried to find various road links to Kabul. It has been a struggle. Neither the road from Tajikistan, nor the link from Chahbahar to Kabul via Iran has paid it the dividends that it has hoped for. Neither arpractical. The road links from Amritsar to Wagah and then to Kabul via the Motorway or GT road will place an unprecedented burden on Pakistan road system. The roads were not built for Tata truck rumbling through the Pakistani arteries to Kabul. The transit of Indian trucks through Pakistan has huge security implications for Pakistani sovereignty. Most in the security establishment and the army abhor the Indian support to anti-Pakistan elements. A minor road accident in Pakistan could turn into an international incident. It would be hard to turn off the spighot once commercial interests have permeated the economic lifeline of Pakistan.

Pakistan’s road system are the arteries of the nation. Just like human arteries are important to a human being, the road network of a country are vital to its existence. A clogged artery in the heart creates a heart attacks. A clogged artery in the brain creates a stroke. Many medicines expunge foreign elements within an artery. Today Mr. Zardari has introduced foreign elements in the Pakistani arteries. The country needs to find the right medicine to expunge the foreign traffic from the Pakistani road system.
Asif Zardari has shown his true colors. (http://rupeenews.com/2008/01/06/the-cia-connection%e2%80%a6-benazir-bhutto%e2%80%99s-assassination-was-pre-planned-the-zia-model-with-a-twistthe-continued-cia-involvement-in-pakistan-the-great-game-continues-when-the-elephants-d/)
Musharraf was removed for:
- Refusing to bomb Iran
- Refusing to allow US to land forces in FATA
- Maintaining a strong ISI
- Forging a very close relationship with China
- Supporting the Kashmiris
- Opposing India at the IAEAand the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)
Zardari is reversing all of the above.
The CIA imposed the Orange revolution, the Velvet revolution–and they manufactured and imposed in Pakistan what is called the “Pin Striped Revolution”. The CIA imposed democracy has nothing to do withthe “for the people by the people”, and everything to do with the geopolitics. Shireen Mazari, Hamid Gul, Zaid Hamid, Ahmed Quraishi and others have clearly identified the menace.

On Zardari’s decision by M Ashraf Mirza
According to the joint communiqué issued at the end of the meeting between President Asif Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singhin New York last week, Pakistan has agreed to providetransit facilities for India ’s trade to Afghanistan. The two countries have also agreed to revive their stalled composite dialogue to address their outstanding issues including the core issue of Jammuand Kashmir. The agreement was reached between the two leaders at their meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly annual session in New York . They also decided to open some trade routes between the two countries and across the Line of Control. The communiqué said that Pakistan will take ‘severe’ action against those involved in terrorist acts’ in India as well as in occupied Kashmir. Pakistan will also probe the Indian allegations about Pakistani intelligence agencies’ alleged involvement in the bombing the Indian embassy in Kabul last July, the communiqué said.
An objective analysis of the decisions taken at the Zardari-Manmohan meeting reveals that Pakistan has gained nothing. Pakistan has, as a matter fact, yielded almost on every count. Willingness to probe the terrorist acts in India and occupied Kashmir, to take severe action against those involved in such acts and to investigate the Indian allegation about Pakistani intelligence agencies’ involvement in the bombing of the Indian embassy in Kabul clearly constitute self indictment on the part of Pakistan. It amounts to accepting responsibility for all terrorist acts that have taken place anywhere in India . Pakistan ’s Foreign Office had repeatedly repudiated the Indian allegations of Pakistan ’s involvement in the terrorist acts. True that there is need for an atmosphere of cordiality, goodwill and reconciliation between the two countries in view of the multifarious challenges faced by the region, but there was certainly no justification to succumb to self incrimination to mollify India .
Mr Zardari was not expected to show ‘dexterity and expertise’ in foreign affairs as well. Interestingly, Mr Zardarihad also not bothered to seek briefing from the Foreign Office before embarking on the US trip for his maiden meetings with President Bush and Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh as elected President of Pakistan. And Pakistan has conceded whatever India had desired in utter disregard to the ground reality that New Delhi is not only creating problems for Islamabad in Balochistan, but is also providing funds and weapons to the militants and terrorists in Tribal Areas to destabilize her.
The transit facility for Indian tradeto Afghanistan has long remained a controversial issue and Pakistan had resisted it by linking it with the resolution of the Kashmir issue. The agreement to this effect between Zardari and Manmohan Singhis, therefore, unwarranted and represents outright violation of Pakistan ’s principled stand. The linkage of transit tradeto Kabul with the settlement of the Kashmir dispute had provided Pakistan an edge to contain India ’s cherished plan to dominate the region economically. After the Musharraf-Shaukat Azizduo trampled the nation’s resolve not to enter into trade withIndia before the resolution of the Kashmir issue, Mr Zardari’s nod to providetransit facility to New Delhi for trade withAfghanistan is certainly one up in the process of compromises of the national interests. Cunning as it is, India will obviously expand its tradeto the Central Asian countries to realize its long cherished dream to monopolise trade in the region. And Kashmir dispute has obviously been thrown into the back burner.
The resumption of the Pak-India composite dialogue was hardly an issue since the talks were never stalled or broken. The process was only in abeyance due to the political situation in Pakistan . The two governments had already announced that their foreign secretaries will initiate the fifth round of the composite dialogue soon. The agreement to resume the composite dialogue was, therefore, hardly an issue. However, it’s quite pertinent that during the last four years, no progress, whatsoever, has been made on any of the outstanding issues between the two countries. The dialogue process is, in fact, India ’s deliberate tactic to keep Pakistan silent on the Kashmir issue, as Islamabad ’s moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiris’ struggle for the restitution of their right to self determination embarrasses New Delhi . It’s thus Indian strategy to keep Pakistan quiet through the so-called dialogue process, which it remains determined not to let it succeed. While not a single issue has been addressed since the initiation of the dialogue process four years ago, New Delhi has created more issues by taking in hand the construction of Kishenganga and Baghlihar dams in violation of the Indus Basin Treaty.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s assertion that India is bound by the Treaty is not different from his so called ‘resolve’ to address the Kashmir issue that persists between the two countries over the past six decades. Mr Manmohan has a strange stance on the issue: He says he is ‘committed’ to address the Kashmir issue, yet he is determined to see that borders are changed. He is also not ready to reduce troops from occupied Kashmir or to let the Kashmiripeople have relief from the repression and oppression at the hands of over seven hundred thousand troops. It’s Indian trick to mislead the Pakistani leadership as well as the world community. India is, in fact, not interested in the resolution of the Kashmir issue, but only wants to keep Pakistan comforted with the continuation of the dialogue process. India is convinced that there is no military solution to the Kashmir issue and, therefore, its strategy is to keep the issue in a limbo. India ought to be, however, mindful that the strategy is not going to help her in the ultimate analysis. India will have to recognize the ground reality that no nation can be kept under subjugation indefinitely by dint of military might.

Thank you for a very different view about the personality of Benazir. My conclusion about her is no different .But you have provided me the ever so important point that PPP under BB was just a mere skeleton and had actually nothing to do with the core values of ZAB.
She has tarnished the image of ZAB even.

Thank you for being a reader.
Thank you for your feedback. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was one of the foremost strategic thinkers of our time. He was Pakistan’s best son after Jinnah and Liaqat. He took steps for the long term survival of Pakistan which lay in an intensely deep relationship with China. He strongly believed that the mutually beneficial relationship with China would help the next generations of Chinese and Pakistanis.
His father was from Junagarh. He know first hand the deceit of Nehru and why and how Nehru had amalgamated the state into India, even though the state had signed an article of accession with Pakistan.
He was our last leader with a passion for Kashmir. His book “Myth of Independence” galvanized our generation. It put forward a vision of Pakistan and a vision for the youth.
Benazir’s PPPP is very different than Zulfiqar’s PPP. The PPP was revolutionary, fiercely independent, and nationalistic. Benazir’s PPPP is power hungry and hollow, it is opportunistic, lacks vision, has no agenda, does not appeal to the intellectuals, and has nothing to offer to the youth.
The genes may have skipped a generation or may have ended up with Murtaza. At least Murtaza intellectualized Bhutto’s thoughts. He took over his fathers library and read the books.
Pinky Bhutto was a shadow of her father–there was nothing upstairs. I have yet to see or hear any intellectual speech from her. Her book “Daughter of the East” was written by someone with an 8th grade knowledge and a 4th grade syntax. Benazir was surrounded by opportunists like Ahtizaz Ahsan who though that by ending the Khalistan movement India would give them Siachin. It did not happen.
Imagine if Bhutto had been alive today. Do you think it would have taken the docile attitude towards the Kashmiri movement. Not a peep from the Zardari gang on Kashmir these days. If Bhutto had been alive, there would be frequent visits to Bangladesh, a nuclear umbrella to them and to the Saudis. If Bhutto had been alive, no one would have dared to attack Afghanistan.
We have written several articles on Bhutto. Perhaps it is time to create a Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto page.
Best Regards,

For economy to go down ,it takes a day not months.
It is its affects and after affects which are felt later on.
The basic thing is trust and confidence of people in banking system and assets of a government or people.
What affects in months is wrong policies?Like in USA too much credit was given.
It took a day to shatter the confidence and since than it is going down.
A solid economy is where the graph is steady and moving up .
Do some research find out what was the annual growth rate at times of Musharaff.
No body can change the figures.Compare it with today.
Also I do not think this depression in Pakistan economy is because of American or European crunch.
Becuase crises in USA started two to three weeks ago but Pakistan economy is going down for months.
Hi Moin
I agree with the analysis done above. One thing I do not understand is Mr.Bhutto was clearly hostile in his foreign policy towards India why Benazir adopted this policy to be friendly with them
This open border thing has cost Benazir and Nawaz twice and very darely.
Why both politicians are still insisting on this?
I can confirm the apparent deal, thanks to Dawn that presents it as a feather in the cap of Zardari. My question is if this deal is treasonous, then aren’t are “eagerly waiting businessmen” as guilty of treason as Zardari?
Re-opening ancient trade route
Following an agreement in principle between the two top leaders of Pakistan and India for allowing Indians an overland trade access to Afghanistan via Pakistan, businessmen are eagerly waiting to see the historic Grand Trunk Road re-emerge as a busy trade corridor between South and Central Asia….
Pakistan already has the greatest of relations with China, the economic miracle of 21st century, for more than three decades now. Then why is Pakistan’s economy always symbolized with a begging bowl ?
If the economy was truly great during Musharraf’s time, it would not fall apart in ten months after he is gone.
Zardari may not be the smartest, but he has the common sense to realize, that days of confrontation with India are a thing of past, and Pakistan has no choice, if it has to survive as a viable nation.
Navid: Thank you for your valuable feedback and links.

why is zardari ignoring the kashmir issue??
and instead granting transit rights via pakistan for india
he needs to improve pakistans economy like musharraf did…as with out a strong economy pakistan will be lowered in its rank as a reaginal power…we should form closer ties with bengladesh, sri lanka, nepal, iran and greater ties with china…not india as they will only use pakistan.
one thing which i have noticed from my previous link
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWyeyYV2AQE
is that all these extreme scenario’s were being worked out in the year 1999 by american think tanks.
THIS WAS BEFORE 9/11….so wouldnt a reasonable person question how in fact they knew that most of the trouble is going to be based in either afghanistan or pakistan…it suggests that a lot of planning has been done to distabalise pakistan by both raw in india and american policies towards pakistan since 9/11…..my first thought soon as i watched the link was…that these are very similar to the strategies america used against iraq just after the iran-iraq war…
firstly iraq had a strong army in the middle east (similar to how pakistan has in the sub-continent) this iraqi army was weakened economically by kuwait and america..this was by trade restrictions, sanctions and competition from kuwait…which in the long run caused iraq to become very weak …in pakistan the economy has been on a balancing act for the last two years…no foreighn investment has been made for the last 8 months due to political instability…america has been giving $11 billion in aid to pakistan since 9/11 which might look like a lot but the truth is the money pakistan has lost econimically due to the so called “war on terror” is estimated to be arround $8 billion every year since 9/11…
we are getting peanuts from our so called allies.
whilst at the same time india gets a nuclear deal
