| RUPEE NEWS | Moin Ansari | ???? ??????? | ????? ????? | US “Charge of the Light Brigade” into Pakistan-hides US failures. For the first time since 2001, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has mentioned a phenomenon which has been kept under covers. Mr. Gates mentioned the unmentionable–an exit strategy from Afghanistan. War drums in the Gulf, Hindu Kush & the Khyber Pass
Pakistan-China-Russia:- An historic realignment: It is pedalogical to note that we have been predicting an historic realignment in Asia. America & Pakistan headed towards divorce? or just a tiff?
How can Pakistan react to US attacks? After facing stiff resistance from a usually compliant corner, Mr. Gates is now tlaking about “review in the Afghan war strategy”. Is Bush stealing Obama’s war on Pakistan? It is pedantic to note that the policy had been recently changed. Obviously the attacks on Pakistan have backfired and the US is in the process of again reviewing its policies. Another new policy has been developed due the following factors:
1) The pernecious anti-government and anti-ISAF forces are relentless in their anti-occupation ferver. Pakistan repulses US raid: PAF jets chase away drones.
2) ISAF and NATO has not been able to pony up the additional 10,000 soldiers needed in Kabul.
3) The US tied down in Iraq has been unable to provide more marines for Afghanistan.
4) The amount of violence and the number of attacks is increasing exponentially.
5) The US was surprised a the ferocity and depth of resistance from the Paksitanis when the US tried to expand the theater of operations.
6) The US has relaized that the major problem in Afghanistan is Mr. Karzai.
7) After eliminating Mr. Musharraf who was growing a backbone, the next persons on the US target list is Mr. Karzai. Mr. Khalilzad will be the next president of Afghanistan and he gets along great with the Pakistani President Mr. Zardari.
US reviewing Afghanistan war strategy, says Gates
* US defence secy says building Afghan army capacity ‘ultimate exit strategy’
* NATO general secy for bolstering border security
LONDON: The Bush administration is considering changing its war strategy in Afghanistan in the wake of rising violence and an increasingly complex insurgent threat, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday.
“You have an overall approach, an overall strategy, but you adjust it continually based on the circumstances that you find,” Gates told reporters. “We did that in Iraq. We made a change in strategy in Iraq and we are going to continue to look at the situation in Afghanistan.”
Gates visited Afghanistan on Wednesday and flew to London to consult the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
The defence secretary said he would raise the issue of how to share the cost of a planned doubling in the size of the Afghan national army in a NATO meeting on Thursday and Friday.
Exit strategy: He said building up the capacity and effectiveness of Afghanistan’s own security forces is “ultimately the exit strategy for all of us”, adding violence had been on the rise in Afghanistan for the past two years, in part because of cross-border attacks from Al Qaeda, the Taliban and other militants find refuge in Pakistan.
Security: NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said security should be strengthened along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where recent US incursions have strained US-Pakistan ties.
Addressing a think-tank, he underlined the need for closer contacts between NATO and the Pakistan government.
“We all need to do a better job together of monitoring and controlling the border, and we need to intensify the work of our so-called tri-partite commission,” he said.
De Hoop Scheffer added, “Success in Afghanistan also means stepping up our political engagement with its neighbours, notably Pakistan.” afp
