If this was a April 1st joke it would have been funny. It was not a joke. The actual assets of Mr. Zardari exceeds this partial list. Just a few weeks ago the Swiss government confiscated $80 million. This type of filthy money is unimaginable for the common man in Pakistan. How can anyone accumulate this type of money–specially one who used to steal hubcaps at St. Pats in Karachi and went to secretarial school in England.

Imelda Marcos had 300 pairs of shoes. The ” ‘Shah’ of Iran” accumulated billions. Papa Doc Duvalier had millions stashed away in foreign bank accounts. How could a small farmer in Sindh make so much money?

This list is saved for posterity in Rupee News. Perhaps a few years from now we will publish another list like this one–hopefully it will include fewer items.

Zardari, widower of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto, has shown his ability to make political compromises to achieve his goals. For instance, the architect of the anti-Bhutto campaign in the 1988 elections, Husain Haqqani, who later dubbed Zardari “Mr 10%”, was appointed by Zardari as Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington. Haqqani, with good offices in the White House and among the neo-conservatives in Washington, lobbied successfully for the US to back the ouster this year of former president Pervez Musharraf.

Another example involves Pakistan’s politically influential and financially strong media group run by the Haroon family, traditional opponents of the PPP. (Mehmood Haroon, then minister of the interior, in 1979 signed the execution order for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on a murder charge. Zulfikar, father of Benazir, was a former president, premier and founder of the PPP.)

All the same, Zardari stunned the political community by appointing the eldest son of the family, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, as Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations and is looking to use the Haroon family’s international connections for his benefit. Atimes

    After spending 11 years in jail and then mostly in exile, no one can accumulate this much wealth. His father owned only Bambinoo in Karachi. Agricultuaral land can not develop with such a fast pace for an absentee businessman.

    He is President of a Democratic Country and every one has a right to ask question. Same question when asked by a poor woman to Khalifa Omar: where did you get this shirt? Poor people in Pakistan may not be able to ask but if these properties are accumulation of loot from poor Pakistan, then Allah wil definitely ask…….and justice prevails sooner or later.

    Munir is right that President did not gain wealth durng Bibi’s term, he also did during before and after. How in the world someone like him needs this job (President) of a very poor country!

    FYI, He is now Presiden tof Pakistan. So its better of you donot abuse your own President.
