Wives should not have sex with husband without consent

ISLAMABAD: Kashmala Tariq’s contacts with certain political luminaries belonging to the federal government led to her expulsion from the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) and may cost her the seat of the National Assembly, party sources said on Wednesday.

“Both the Leader of Opposition Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and the PML-Q Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat were highly critical of her consistent criticism of the PML-Q,” a party leader told this correspondent.

He said Kashmala, Riaz Fatiana and a couple of other party MNAs had formed a group within the PML-Q. They had also approached the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza, and urged her not to declare Pervez Elahi as the Leader of the Opposition and Faisal as the Parliamentary Leader because majority of PML-Q MPs did not support them.

Additionally, the PML-Q leader said, this group had also tried to prevail upon the Speaker not to accept the nominations given by the PML-Q for the chairmanships and members of the National Assembly standing committees. Instead, they had tried to get their own names inducted. “We have an understanding with the government and the Speaker according to which they have to accept the nominations handed over by the PML-Q for the house bodies,” the PML-Q leader said.

As Kashmala started acting against the PML-Q, President Pervez Musharraf, once his chief backer, became highly critical of her. These days, he doesn’t utter good words about her in his sessions with a select group of PML-Q leaders, one of them, who has been a frequent visitor of the Presidency, told The News.

In the PML-Q meetings, Kashmala and her group had been calling for giving top parliamentary positions to people from the smaller provinces, another PML-Q leader said. He said the PML-Q had added Kashmala’s name in its list of nominees for special seats of the National Assembly at the end. But it was advanced on former federal minister and prominent PML-Q leader Humayun Akhtar’s recommendation so that her victory as MNA became certain. Her friendship with Humayun is commonly known, but it could not save her from the wrath of the PML-Q leadership.

The PML-Q leadership did not consult Humayun when it decided to proceed against her. Her publicly aired “independent” views on most issues where the PML-Q had a clear-cut stand ruffled the feathers of the party leadership, which finally decided to ditch her. Outspoken and ostentatiously stylish, Kashmala appeared on the political horizon in 2002 when she was elected on a special seat on the PML-Q ticket.
