US Pakistan FlagSenator Barack Obama has visited Paksitan. Many think that this visit had a positive impact on the young man. However many critics complain that his visit just goes to show that you can take a horse to drink but you can’t make him drink. In three weeks one can learn about the culture religion and geogrpahy of the country. One has enough time to appreciate the good things. What did Obama learn? The results are mixed.

Thursday, April 24, 2008 By Umar CheemaNEW YORK: Chairman Senate Muhammadmian Soomro may be having a friend in White House if Barak Hussain Obama finally succeeds in his presidential bid.Hardly a few people know about Soomro’s link with Obama, which he never discussed it in public. But in private interactions with influential Pakistanis here in the US, Obama disclosed that Soomro’s father was his host when he went on a hunting expedition in Jacobabad during his visit to Pakistan in 1981.
While in Karachi, Obama had stayed at the residence of his college friend, Hassan Chandio. In Jacobabad, he was the guest of Soomro family. Muhammadmian Soomro confirmed this information and said it was his first meeting with Obama.

“Yes, he had been our guest and spent three days in Jacobabad,” he told The News. Soomro, presently in the US, his second home, said an American friend had told his father, Ahmadmian Soomro, about Obama’s arrival in Pakistan and asked him to look after the American. Soomro’s father was the deputy speaker of West Pakistan Assembly and had also later served in the Senate.

Ahmadmian Soomro had also served in banking industry and was considered a pioneer in cooperative banking. By the time Soomro’s father had hosted Obama, he was only a college student who went to Pakistan on his way from Indonesia where his mother was working with the Ford Foundation’s micro credit finance project. Also Obama’s mother was a frequent traveller to Pakistan and according to Time Magazine, she had a little bit proficiency in speaking Urdu. Soomro was among Obama’s hosts in Pakistan. The News

US Pakistan FlagAccording to news reports Mr. Obama visited Pakistan. His mother had visited the country so many times that she had a working knowledge of Urdu-the national language of Pakistan as well as many Muslims in the Subcontinent.

Is the handshake real and sincere?Given this background, Mr. O’bama’s weird and strange statements about Pakistan are not only mind boggling, but possibly depict an immaturity that is incomprehensible in an American presidential candidate. Then again, how can we complain, the candidate that is ready on day one threatened to obliterate the entire country of Iran–civilians, and all.

When Soomro was asked about the person who referred Obama to his father, he said he nowadays lived in some country in South America. He was, however, reluctant to disclose his identity, saying he will have to seek permission from that man before giving his profile.

Although, Obama has not disclosed his link with Soomro, he mentioned it during his canvassing campaign while talking to a Pakistani American, Shahid Ahmad Khan, member of Board of Trustees Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Soomro was among Obama’s hosts in Pakistan

  1. The Editor responses are marked >>

Given that a new government has transitioned to ease Gen. Musharraf out of the way, and given the many varied views held by Pakistan military and ISI, I’d guess that Obama could be flirting with serious problems if he is elected (God help us), and informs the new government: you have 12 hours to get into gear and bomb an al-Qaeda camp. Apparently, such an occurrence happened in the last 72 hours, but one has to wonder how long Pakistanis will stand for Pakistan being bombed unilaterally by Americans.

    >> There is so much resentment in Pakistan about this and other bombings that it may >>destabilize any pro-US machinery that exists. The US is surely flirting with fire. There are >>more than 80 independent TV channels in Pakistan, and they will not allow this to be swept >>under the rug.

My guess is: the many various views on the U.S. will not succumb to perceived arse kissing by the new government. And rightly so. Pakistanis have their own world of problems and solutions, and allowing a greater rather than lesser role for America seems a loser from where I sit.

    >> By your spelling of a certain word, I guess you are in Britian! You are absolutley right. Even >>the Tliban (actually a misnomer, because it really is the Pashtuns and many other groups >>fighting occupation) also realise the fact that the drone is trying to sabotage the peace >>accords and bring more US bombing. Pakistan will not allow this, and it will come to an end

What I would like to see more of, emerging from the Pakistani press, is the context of 1981, when Obama visited. He may have been ushered about in Jacobabad, by Mr. Soomro, but exactly what was the rest of his trip about? Where did he go? What is Hyderabad in terms of an Indian city? Is it a heavily Muslim city? What would be there for him to visit and observe? What were the general travel restrictions at the time? One poster said they were leaning against casual American visitors at the time.

    >>Good questions. He visited Hydrabad Sindh which is in Pakistan–a predominanltly Muslim city, >>part of “Urban Sindh” (which is part of the MQM base). In 1981, Americans were the heors, >>and Pakistan could do no wrong. Americans had free access everywhere. Apparently Obama >>visited as a tourist and stayed with the landowners

The various tentacles of ISI were everywhere, I’d guess, in that the Americans were asking the ISI to run the operations on the ground in Afghanistan v. the Soviet Union. The early days of the so-called “Arab Afghan” mujahadeen was in swing, and of course, there are allegations that a Pakistani general was a mentor to bin Laden. If there WERE travel restrictions in Pakistan then for Americans, isn’t that just another reason to search more info?

    >>You are correct. Except that the “Afghan jihad” started 2 years before the CIA joined in.

Does anyone recall the full tour schedule of the rock star, Barack Obama?

    Who were his other guides?

How did a 20 year old under graduate rate top drawer assistance and monitoring from various tour guides, most certainly, Mr. Soomro?

    >>Let us all investigate the poignant questions

  2. The nuances you describe are YOURS, and not the actual soundbite. The statement if with your “IFS’ canno tbe taken in isolation. This muddy’s up the water, gives solace to anti-Pakistani elements, and raises the level of rhetoric against Pakistan, which in turn reverberated back to Pakistani-Americans.

He should have said “The premise of the question is wrong. We have a relationship with the people of Paksitan for more than 6 decades. They were the founding members of SEATO and CENTO. They helped us defeat the USSR in Afghansitan which led to the destruction of the USSR. Pakistan is an ally, they have lost hundreds of soldiers, and we will work with them.”

Politiicans should be very aware that no such statements are ever made.

Did he make the same statements about Germany, Canada or England. Why not?

According to your logic, his statement is applicable there too….

….there is more to the statement then it meets the eye…there is a deliberate plan to override Pakistani sovreignity and do whatever they want….if you don’t realize this…then a mature approach will help you.

The discussion of “bypassing” Pakistan to get to these terrorists sets a precedent which would allow any country to reach into any other country and pick up their undesirable.

By this logic, Pakistan should be able to pick up the 169 in India, or India should send a force to pick up Sarabjit Singh.

Mr. O’bama has also made statements on Pakistani nukes– “we should take the nukes out”.

Taken as a whole, this ups the ante in anti-Pakistan rhetoric.

  3. I wish you would get your facts straight before pontificating

You state: “Given this background, Mr. O’bama’s weird and strange statements about Pakistan are not only mind boggling, but possibly depict an immaturity that is incomprehensible in an American presidential candidate. Then again, how can we complain, the candidate that is ready on day one threatened to obliterate the entire country of Iran–civilians, and all.”

If you actually read what he said, it was “If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won’t act, we will,”

    Nothing wrong there!

    IF
Pakistan were to harbor high value Al Qaeda targets and their ilk (who are the enemy of both the U.S., and the overwhelming majority of Pakistanis/moderate Muslims),

    AND
    IF Musharraf refused to act

    the U.S. would.

He did not say he would bomb Pakistan or bomb Iran.

    Get your facts straight.
