| RUPEE NEWS | March 21st, 2008 | Moin Ansari | معین آنصآرّی | اخبار روپیہ | This is one of the most unusual and interesting events on the planet. Everything is allowed, and there is a free for all for millions. The size of the event dwarfs the populations of most countries of Europe. The sheer size of the Khumb Mela is unimaginable. There is no legal authority during the event and no police or army present. It is full of drugs, fondling, inebriation, rape, and every illicit activity known to man. This orgy out of pre-history can be politely described as: begrimed, black, blackened, cruddy, crummy, disheveled, fecal, feculent, foul, grimy, gross, grubby, grungy, impure, loathsome, miry, mucky, muddy, nasty, obscene, offensive, polluted, putrid, repulsive, revolting, scummy, scuzzy, sleazy, slimy, slipshod, sloppy, slovenly, smoky, soily, sooty, squalid, unclean, uncleanly, unkempt, unwashed, verminous, vile, yecchy…

Around six out of 10 Indians live in the countryside, where abject poverty is widespread. 34.7 % of the Indian population lives with an income below $ 1 a day and 79.9 % below $ 2 a day. According to the India’s planning commission report 26.1 % of the population live below the poverty line. [World Bank's poverty line of $1 a day, but the Indian poverty line of Rs 360 a month, or 30 cents a day]

This is a sample of opinions about the Khumb Mela from the BBC, Artichoke and other forums.
It looks a bit scary as everyone seems to be smoking drugs and covered in ashes….can be very easy to catch a disease near the Ganges where the ashes of the dead are thrown and even dead bodies thrown in….
Imagine how many rapes take place during this “kumb mela” it must be the area with the most rape cases worldwide in the second picture they are cleaning each other while nude. Totally disgusting this is a gathering for the poor, uneducated and the illiterate. With these cramped conditions it must be horrendous, diseases will spread like wild fire and people say Glastonbury is rampant. I don’t even want to know whats in the river– half burnt (cremated) bodies, dirt from people bathing in the water, bacteria, viruses, hepatitis, many many diseases and people call this “holy water”. They think they are “washing away there sins” they are actually washing themselves with extremely dirty water and making themselves more unhygienic.

Traders also sell bhang lassi, a sweet, bright green drink made of buffalo milk, yoghurt, sugar and hash, served in a clay mug. Non-psychoactive lassi may also be purchased and it may be more expensive than the wacky kind. Like much of Indian bureaucracy, the legal status of the drug is difficult to understand. There are government bhang lassi shops, and sadhus smoke charas openly and prodigiously, as Lord Shiva likes to in his Himalayan cave, but in some cases it does appear to be illegal (you may not smoke a joint in some of the guesthouses or in the street). When the drink is finished, partakers smash their mugs in the streets, and wait for about an hour for their sense of reality to meet the same fragmented fate.
At the river’s edge, the corpse is given a final bath in the water of the Ganges. Twenty yards down the river, the living are splashing around, shaving, brushing their teeth and pissing in the same holy water. Parmahansa Yogananda, founder of the Self-Realization Fellowship, tells us that the water of the Holy Ganges is perpetually clean, despite the massive amounts industrial and human waste emptied into it every day; the holy water acts as a kind of spiritual disinfectant. As corpses are considered unclean in Hinduism, as are the turds released into it every morning all the way from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, perhaps the Indians washing happily share this conviction. The bathing of the living and the dead in the same stretch of water seems to embrace the idea that death is a part of life, and serves to remind us that it will come to all of us, and is not to be feared. Again, I think this is an acknowledgment of the importance of non-attachment to the flesh in the Hindu faith. Western doctors however, advise their charges not to go into the Ganges, and this advice is generally taken by all but the most Indophilic of seekers. A brave minority however cast away their passports, given names and senses of irony at the holy river, in addition to the words of their doctors.
The Ganges is said to flow from heaven to earth through the matted locks of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas, and it has a deep religious significance for Hindus. There are countless temples dotted along the murky river, some of them sinking into its soft sand, and Indians climb over and jump off the ruins to wash alongside the dead at all times of the day. You quickly become used to the smell of roasting flesh, which closely resembles that of burning hair, and is in any case preferable to the acrid stench of the detritus in every alleyway.
The holy dip in river Ganges is some thing that no Hindu ever wants to miss. It is believed that after taking a bath in the Ganges one becomes sacred and innocent as a new-born child. But belief is just a belief. The Ganges is now so polluted that taking bath or even just a dip is quite dangerous.
This whole Mela seems like a big GERM! How can people even think about going into the Ganges River which is polluted with god knows what? And all those men flashing their private parts in public is so disgusting! What kind of celebration is this?
I have smelled the river before 70 million people have bathed in it; I have no desire to be anywhere near it afterwards.
Some 60 million Hindus are usually attend Kumbh Mela which is a Hindu pilgrimage that occurs four times every twelve years and rotates among four locations: Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Each twelve-year cycle includes one Maha Kumbh Mela (Great Kumbh Mela) at Prayag, which is attended by millions of people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world
There are a lot of activities:
1) Millions of Naked Sadus show up. Activities include religious discussions, devotional singing, mass feeding of holy men and women and the poor, and religious assemblies where doctrines are debated and standardized. Kumbh Mela (especially the Maha Kumbh Mela) is the most sacred of all the pilgrimages.

2) Cows are there
3) Urine drinking is extolled (both Cow Urine and personal urine).
4) Drugs are also available to get to the higher level. Bhang is the drug of choice, but hashish and other drugs are everywhere.
5) “Dancers” from all of the country show up to entertain the naked millions.

Secondly the term Hindu Kush was propogated by Emperor Babar the founder of the Mughal Empire on the killing of Hindu boys in the mountains.
Please note that we have submitted a correction to Wikipedia several times, but they have not corrected this inaccurate description of Hindu Kush”. We encourage all our regular readers to also do the same on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindukush
For those who are familiar with Hindu or Urdu, please think of the word “Khud Kushi” (خد کشي)which means “Suicide” or “self killing. Suicide bombers are called “khud kush” (خد کش ) in Urdu, Perisa, Darri, Pushto etc.
“Koh” (کوہ) means ’summit” or “peak”. The word ” “Koh” (کوہ ) has no relationship to the word “kush”.
The claim that “Hindu kush” (ھندو کش) means “Hindu mountians’ is not only inaccurate, it is hillarious and stupid.
Ibn Batuta on the term Hindu Kush
“ ‘Another reason for our halt was fear of the snow. For upon this road there is a mountain called Hindukush, which means ‘the slayer of the Indians ‘because the slave boys and girls who are brought from the land of India die there in large numbers as a result of the extreme cold and the great quantity of snow “.(The Travels of Ibn Battutah ed. Tim Mackintosh-Smith, Picador (2003) p 146. ISBN 0330418793 )
The legend of Hindukuš meaning ’slaying Hindus’ is assigned to an event a hundred years after Bābur’s mention of the name. H. W. Bailey (1985). Indo-Scythian Studies being Khotanese Texts Volume VII, p. 66. Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-25779-4.
The mountains of the Hindu Kush system diminish in height as they stretch westward: toward the middle, near Kabul, they extend from 4,500 to 6,000 meters; in the west, they attain heights of 3,500 to 4,000 meters. The average altitude of the Hindu Kush is 4,500 meters. The Hindu Kush system stretches about 966 kilometres laterally, and its median north-south measurement is about 240 kilometres. Only about 600 kilometres of the Hindu Kush system is called the Hindu Kush mountains. The rest of the system consists of numerous smaller mountain ranges including the Koh-e Baba, Salang, Koh-e Paghman, Spin Ghar (also called the eastern Safid Koh), Suleiman Range, Siah Koh, Koh-e Khwaja Mohammad and Selseleh-e Band-e Turkestan. The western Safid Koh, the Malmand, Chalap Dalan, Siah Band and Doshakh are commonly referred to as the Paropamise by western scholars, though that name has been slowly falling out of use over the last few decades

That was supposed to ‘you guys did an informative piece’, the not is a typo
I think you’re right about Miss piggy.. and I’m really sorry to hear that they’re sending threats and hate-mail just because you guys just did not an informative piece, on an important event, in a significant world religion.
You educated so many folks… it’s not your fault they’re wearing no clothes and are doing some ahem, ‘unconventional’ things. Obviously anything other than Bollywood artifice and propaganda i.e. India’s reality is not welcome. Pretty it ain’t but it’s reality so they should embrace it. After all it’s publicity right, and all publicity is good…?
P.S An excellent reminder that clothes definitely maketh man and tahara/safaai is half of Eeman though.
It’s alright for Indians/Hindus/others to criticise every aspect of Islam, to attack Muslims and Pakistanis all the time but it’s not ok to post some vibrant pictures of the religious ceremonies of Indians/Hindus in free and democratic society because it’s bad PR for India/Hinduism.
Why? Is that because the reality isn’t the fake gloss that is portrayed in Bollywood? I thought you all love freedom of speech, expression and everything. Hindus regularly cuss and ridicule Islam and its rites. They have mocked the Prophet of Islam even before independence by writing of ‘the rangeela rasool’ (the colourful/merry prophet) throwing aspersions on his noble character.
Hindu fanatics stop Muslims in India from sacrificing cows on Eid u Adha (just because they can’t eat them themselves) and formed so-called ‘cow protection societies’ as far back as the 1870s. Even now in so-called ’secular’ democratic’ India Muslims can’t practice their religion freely including sacrificing an animal and here we have their brethren ranting about an interesting article on a Kumbh Mela.
Look at the thinly disguised Muslim hatred here. As soon as one of the Hindu posters above saw this article, he started ranting about how Muslims are responsible for the population explosion in India. Come again? Liberal estimates put the Muslim population of India at around 150 million and if you deduct those in Indian Occupied Muslim Kashmir who’re not even Indian, there are even less. So WHO THE HELL are the rest of the people that make up the 1 billion+ population of India?
thinly disguised…I’ll say!!… You should read the abuse that is not published… Only a dozen threats today … Today was a good day… Must be the Christmas spirit
A pig has no right to call other pig dirty.
I think Miss piggy is cute and she does call all the filthy old hogs dirty!
cmon guys , the writer is a pakistani , his upbringing was filled with anti-india influences . its understandable that he wud write this prejudiced article . though one of my many unbiased muslim indian friends cud have written a more informative and interesting one .
Agreed that the ganges aint as clean as it is holy .
This is a joke guys!! The Kumbh Mela is a Hindu Holy event and nobody has the right to make a negative comment as such. If you don’t wanna be a part of the rites, don’t go there, whether hindu or not! Every religion has its own beliefs and every individual has the right to practise his or her faith inhindered. In India, there are temples, mosques, churches, Jain temples, Gurudwaras, etc all side by side. Nobody has the right to condemn anothers rite unless its directly harmful to another human being. If you are a vegetarian, you would be disgusted by the sight of a non – vegetarian eating a steak in front of you. If you don’t like it, don’t look at it and stay out of such a situation. You don’t judge him or her because you dont eat meat!!If you don’t like the Kumbh mela………don’t go there. If you don’t like your neighbour, just ignore him, don’t deffame anothers sacred beliefs.
Thankyou
These images are embarrassing for a country that has a space program and a growth rate of 11%. All these Indians here who are defending this barbarism are blinded by their nationalism. I am a proud Indian too, but I love my country too much to pretend that these things don’t happen in India.
For those of you who are not Indian, I’d like to say that this is a one-sided representation. Every developing country has its share of tribalistic traditions. We have 1 billion people, our biggest goal must be to reduce our populations numbers. In that respect, it is the Muslims of India and not the Hindus who are to balame. Check out the statistics on this page (graph) http://www.pewforum.org/world-affairs/countries/?CountryID=94 . Muslims are having twice the umber of kids as Hindus. That is the worst form of animalistic behavior because it is designed to overpopulate and spread their gene-pool. THat is the real mark of a virulent religion- fundamentalist Christians in the US (mormons, evangelicals) and fundamentalist Muslims in the Middle East) have the most kids in the world. This is the worst action that a civilized human could do considering the state of our planet and the future of life on earth.
This person now is writing under Imran. He has posted several comments on the site under different names like ajay bharadwaj
There is no mention of Hindusism in the article. Only pictures. There is no criticism of any religion in the article. Only pictures.
the man who has written the article is biased,he has written this influenced by his pre-conceived thoughts, and prejudices.he dont know the greatness of hinuism he dont deserves to be called human.
In response to your question on “having read about Khum Mela”. Our readers would rather “see” what the mela is all about.
According to our best recolllection, the word “Hindu” Hinduism” does not appear anywhere in the article. All religions HAVE to be respected. As unubiased and balanced news site we would not even dare to disrespect any religion. Disrespect would be a gross violatoin of our code of conduct and our charter. Something like that could get us fired!
There is nothing in the article against any religion. The original artilce was posted by another proud Hindu like you. We simply reported the facts as seen by various journalists, some of them Hindu and Indian.
All pictures and U-tube videos have been provided by proud Hindus like you. We applaud all of them. Rupee News does critical analysis of various events round the planet. We sincerely apologize if there was a hint of irrevernece to any religion.
sir, I belive you either have not read about Kumbha Mela or ou Hinduism or else you would not have posted this article. unless until you learn about a religion you become a mockery in the eyes of those who knows about that religion.I ask you only one question to your entire narration of filth story. Why are all those still live healthily and come to the place years after if they were to be disease struck andperished ? can youanswer that? I pity you sir. iam proud to be hindu.
i regret being a hindu , nothing can be more dirty than this, shame is the only emotion iam filled with
hi all,
Hindu is a religion with full purity, naga sadhus are the important and holy symbol of great Hindu religion, they are nt showing any kind of sexuality in Hinduism, its not like western nude beaches, Naga Sadhus are the men of God, as we believed, rest other religion’s dirty and non sense people are saying any thing about hindusim, then we dnt care, as we are better than other religion, which is more popular with another name that is terrorism.
Jai Hindu.

Hey Professor, what happened..in one of your perorations in another blog you chastised a responder for his poor English grammar..you are slipping buddy, because, now you write “..With these crampt conditions it must be hurrendus, disseases..”
Anyway, I have been to a Maha Kumbh Mela, where thousands of so called Sadhus (not Sadus, as you write) walk naked, smoke Hash and have fun with some young white chiquitas….as for your posit.. “Imagine how many rapes take place…”, not many for a congregation that huge..in fact there are so many people all the time, how do you do it..unless you have done it yourself in some place.. or did you masquerade as a “Sadu” and raped some innocent woman who thought you were a ” Sadu” !!
Yes,, if you go to Times square on Jan 1st or to a baseball park, you will find filth..and in a poor tropical country like India where millions get shoved into “crampt conditions” one shouldn’t be surprised to see some of the things you describe..since all the writings here seems to have your name, I presume you write all of them..you seem to be an arm chair travel expert, historian, avionics expert etc, etc..you are Da Man.. I envy you..next time, before you write about a place, go see it and then give us your personal view gained thru experience..don’t become a cut-and-paste jockey !
it is better to have no religion than to have hinduism
Indian are vermin spreading as plague everywhere.
