The do more mantra is counter productive to Pakistani American relations

The do more mantra

Pakistan must do more to stop cross-border terrorism. India must do more to create a conducive atmosphere for peace. America must do more to listen to Pakistanis. Bush must do more to help Pakistan get the foreign aid that was promised. Musharraf must to more to catch Al-Qaeda. Powell must do more to help Pakistan. Armitage must do more to assist the Pakistan military. Europe must do more to stop proliferation. Libya must do more and ship lots more of the equipment it bought but didn’t know what to do with. North Korea must do more

Pakistanis are sick and tired of the “do more” lecture. This lecture is as stale as the stink that emanates from “Abu Graib”. The “do more” lecture is counterproductive and is having a negative impact on the long term US-Pakistani relationship. Pakistanis have elephant memories and remember things. The visiting US diplomats should “do more” to learn some manners and learn to say “Thank You”. Rhetoric has its limits. Do American diplomats use the same type of mantra for all their non-NATO allies? The pathetic periodic and vitriolic diatribe against Pakistan by and Zalmay Khalilzada and Richard Armitage is insensitive, reeks of hubris, double standards and is destroying the goodwill for America and Americans. The visitors should see the “writing on the wall”.

If this insensitivity continues many find comfort in the message of President Ayub Khan. We need “Friends Not Masters”. Pakistan was the only nation dismembered after World War Two. Pakistanis have pledged “Never Again” and no amount of arm twisting will let Pakistanis give up their sovereignty. Pakistani friends of the USA have the following advise for American diplomats:

The diplomats should “do more” and take memory improvement pills. The selective amnesia of these diplomats conjures up images of “The Ugly American” that has forgotten “Charlie’s War” (Congressman Charlie Wilson) and the fact that it was the CIA that created these Frankenstein’s monsters in the “Unholy Wars” (Cooley) and left us to clear the garbage. This attitude perpetuates the belief by a growing number of Pakistanis that they supported the wrong superpower and that Pakistan would have been better off with the USSR borders at Torkham. Selective Amnesia destroys friendships. After all that Pakistan has done for the USA in the past 50 years, the USA should “do more” to learn to some manners to say “Thanks You”.

2 million Pakistanis, Afghans and Muslims died supporting the USA in the egotistical and useless Cold War between the USSR-USA. 3.6 million Afghans were hosted in Pakistan for a decade which caused havoc in every facet of our society creating the Drug and Klashnikov culture that destroyed the very fabric of Pakistani sociology. Pakistan supported the USA in SEATO and CENTO and even offered her soil to the USA to be used for U2 flights to take off from Badabare Airforce base.

No one mentions that the State Bank had an office in the WTC and 300 of the victims were Muslims. Talk about an ingrate nation that forgets friends and friendship. Accolades for Reagan and the heroes who died on the beaches of Normandy, but no mention of the 2 million “mujahideen” who died in the Hindu Kush liberating Afghanistan from the clutches of the “Evil Empire”. While Ronald Reagan has airports and freeways named after him, the 2 million Muslims who spilt blood for him fighting the USSR are ignored. Right after Pakistan and the USA defeated the USSR that led to the collapse of the USSR, the USA walked away from Afghanistan and left behind 100,000 mines that the USSR had planted there.

10 years later she returned to implant an anti-Pakistan government whose writ is confined to Northwest Kabul. The rest of Afghanistan was left to purchased warlords. Pakistan was asked to clean up the mess and is continually asked to manage Afghanistan, an area controlled by the USA and NATO! Pakistan is continuously being asked to close down the “madarsas”, the same ones created and financed by Charlie Wilson and the CIA to find fodder for the war against the USSR. No funding is available to close the schools and start new secular ones.

Those who ask Pakistan to “do more” should “do more” to eradicate their Klashnikov and Drug culture and leave Pakistan alone. The USA should “do more” to appreciate Pakistan and Pakistanis. The USA should “do more” to help Pakistan build more schools and hospitals and libraries and Universities. Pakistanis expect major US Universities to “do more” to set up satellite campuses in Pakistan. Pakistanis expect the Library of Congress to “do more” to set up remote libraries in all major US cities. Pakistanis expect US hospitals to “do more” to setup clinics in remote villages of Pakistan. Pakistanis expect the USA to “do more” to pay off the debts. Pakistanis expect the USA to “do more” to liberate Kashmir and Palestine. Pakistanis expect the USA to “do more” and quit interfering in Pakistani affairs. We expect the USA to “do more” to build roads in Baluchistan and build canals.

Pakistani friends of the USA say, the USA should “do more” to raise the decibel level of Thank You to the Pakistani nation not just a person. We expect the USA to “do more” to stay out of Pakistan and Afghanistan and “do more” not to drag Pakistan into Iraq. If the USA does not change its attitude it may not have a friend left in Pakistan. If you want to continue to tell us to “do more”, a growing number of Pakistanis will say “Enough is Enough”. “No More”. Some may even ask you to “do more” to “stay home”. Some may even say “Yankee Go Home”. If “Al-Qaida” finds an ear to the resemtment against US ungratefulness, It could get a lot worse then a slogan. The state department should hire Ms. Manners to teach the diplomats to say “Thank You”.
